Went for lunch on Memorial Day. The staff was some of the best I’ve seen at a restaurant and the food was delicious. Good southern comfort food. The sweet tea was excellent as well.

I will start my review by copying and pasting the first two sentences from my review of Polly’s Corner Café: When I walked into the dining room, I wasn’t sure if it was a restaurant or a retirement village. Now, I certainly have nothing against the elderly, but seeing so many of them concentrated in one place should be a key to any diner as to what kind of food you can expect — mushy and/or flavorless. Well, the style of this restaurant is what one may come to expect from a typical cafeteria — get in a line to pick your food and take it to a table. The décor is just plain and unremarkable. The food itself… I honestly can’t remember what I ordered because it all tasted the same. I’m seriously not even trying to be sarcastic here. I had meat and some veggies and every bit of it was just mushy baby food. Absolutely nothing stood out. After eating there, you definitely get a feeling that people just don’t care… about the food, the flavor, life, or anything at all really. It’s depressing. I’m going to go listen to sad music and cry now.

Oldest rule in restaurant business is good food and fair prices will result in success. This place understands this. Is food gourmet no. But it is good and plenty of choices and very reasonable. Staff is friendly and helpful you feel appreciated. Would have no problem in going back next time we are in Macon.

S & S… Where to start. First I have to admit to having a bias. I have been dining at cafeteria’s like S&S since my parents took the family out to Friday dinner in the late sixties. At the time the restaurant was in downtown Macon(near Cherry St?)…as was Sears & Roebuck. Though I don’t get to go often these days, I enjoy it when I do. Despite my fondness, cafeterias appear to be a fading genre. Consistent with a cafeteria, the menu varies with day of the week, however S & S is basically southern fare. Today, I had the trout almondine, squash casserole, mac & cheese, tartar sauce, egg custard pie, and crackling bread. The trout almondine was good, however the breading is always heavy. As a result, I didn’t finish my portion; which was pretty large. The squash casserole was good; though not exceptional. Tartar sauce was good, if a bit oniony. Mac and Cheese, acceptable. The crackling bread is exceptional(for those who like that kind of thing). I loved it and truthfully, will go to S &S for that(and the liver and onions) alone. The egg custard too was VERY good. My greedy eyes were begging for the sweet potato pie(a great choice in the past); perhaps next time. The waitress kept my soda filled and checked on me a number of times during the meal. All the staff was nice. The bathroom was clean AND smelled that way. Overall, a good meal, and I will go there again.

This place is like all the others that ive been to… huge selection, crowded restaurant, very nice waitstaff, and over all good food… i got shrimp, corn, sweet potato fries, mashed potatos, an unsweetened tea. and i thought that for an S&S cafeteria, everything was excellent. no complaints here…

Recently was in Macon on business and ate here every night… I love cafeterias but this one is really a standout… The food presentation & selection, plus the friendly and smiling employees made my dining experience exceptional… And the food was delicious, hot, and simply southern cooking at it’s best. You can bet I’ll be stopping back here when I’m in Macon. Exceptional dishes were the tuna salad, salmon patty, beef tips, and the squash casserole… Definately don’t miss the whole baked apple if it’s there… The BEST!!!

A great place to stop for some old fashioned home cooking. Pick your meat, vegi’s, bread and drink served by one of the friendly cafeteria workers. I suggest the baked chicken, sliced roast beef(if you see pink in middle), anything with sweet potatoes and the sweet tea. A Sunday favorite in Macon, so get here early to avoid the long lines. Kids eat .99(meat/2vegi/bread/desert/drink), what a deal!

If you like«southern homecooked meals» then you might enjoy S&S. Growing up around here, I’ve noticed the resturant to be a local favorite, and I enjoy eating there as well. Not the healthiest food, but tasty.
