Great day-trip down from Kirksville and Truman State University. We stood at the counter and tasted all of the winery’s offerings. There was no charge for tasting, and our server was very friendly, well-informed, and eager to explain the development of each of the available offerings. She was very attentive to our tastes and offered lots of helpful suggestions. Very fun, informative, and inexpensive: perfect for amateur wine drinkers. West Winery does not grow any of their own grapes, but contracts with Missouri growers, ships in grapes, and produces all of their wines on-site. I enjoyed almost all of their wines, and my wife and I brought home a bottle of their Rouge for about $ 12. Our server also told us live blues and jazz is common on weekend evenings. The space was fresh, urban, and clean, surprising after stepping in from the rest of the dilapidated downtown. The front doors open wide to the sidewalk, creating a patio-like atmosphere, and the seating area is filled with cheap plastic chairs and tables. I would give West Winery 5 stars, except for the lack of quality seating. For our tasting, we stood at the bar(no stools), and the rest of the seating could stand an upgrade. Still West Winery is a diamond in the rough of downtown Macon, filled with good wine, friendly people, and a great price-point.

We had a great time visiting with the winemakers on Saturday. Very friendly people in a fantastic space with a nice list of quality wines. We left with 3 bottles. :)

This is a lovely, little winery in Macon, MO; open since 2009 and owned by Chris & Jen West. It is located right on the main street of Macon, tucked in with other local businesses. You can stop in for a tasting or sit down at a table for a glass or two. You can actually watch the winemakers make the wine as you sip your glass as the tanks are in the main room with the bar. It makes the whole process come together. They also have live music on some weekends and are available as a rental space. My mother is from Marceline, MO(another small town on Hwy 36). One take, after visiting my gma, we drove over to Macon to check out this winery. It was beautiful inside! The women who provided our wine tasting was very knowledgeable and could tell us about each wine as well as the history of the winery. I am a sweet wine person, so I enjoyed(and bought!) Duck Creek Red. My mom is an apple fan, so she bought a bottle of the Dry Apple wine. Can’t wait to go back!
