Smokin Pit BBQ Catering

I really wanted to trust them… unfortunately it did not work out so well. My Fiancée and I had put down a deposit for our wedding hoping to use them as our caterers. We went to Yosemite one weekend and decided on the way home we would drive an hour to Madera and try out their restaurant. Sadly, the restaurant was closed but there was no indication on their website or on Unilocal at the time. (It now is updated)
Anyways, we had to call a few different numbers to get a hold of the person we were working with for our wedding. We finally got ahold of her and she apologized and explained their catering business was still working. We emailed her about a week later asking if we would be able to set up a time to try the food out and heard no response. We emailed again about another week later and no response again. Finally we emailed asking about the cancellation policy and we received a response! In her response she said that they would be unable to refund the deposit (But this was not stated in any previous emails or our invoice.) and then asked if we were thinking of canceling. (We were not thinking of canceling up until she told us we could not get a refund, but did not answer our question about trying the food.)
We emailed back explaining that we were hoping for better communication and that we were not thinking of canceling if we were able to try the food. (This being for our wedding we were really looking forward to working with them.)
We received an email back apologizing for the lack of communication, and that they would refund our deposit on June 23, 2015 and we should receive this refund within 14 business days. It’s been 1 month since this was said to us and still no refund. We have emailed a few times since and have called numerous times and left voicemails with our information so they can contact us back and let us know what is going on.
While I am all for going with the small family owned businesses, this one has been an absolutely horrible experience and makes me distrust these types of establishments.
Please re-​think using them as a caterer and save yourself the trouble.

Great atmosphere and really good BBQ! This is a LOCAL family owned restaurant. The owners/​operators really care and seem to be trying to put together a great product. I will be back for sure!
