Hoo boy. This is not the most modern looking bodega. I needed some tamales and was in the area, Matt W told me how to navigate to the sketchy mercado… sketchiness confirmed! In all honestly, nothing particular happened here: I ordered my tamales(they stock them from El Poblano), they were fine. But the store is just dingy and meh. PS-if you’re trying to find it, it’s next to a laundromat and wedged behind a gas station. In case you are in need of emergency weekend tamales on the North Side.

So, first review of this place! Sweet! Mercado Juarez is just a tiny lil Mexican market up on the northeast side, and is the kind of place where if you blink while driving by, you miss it. It’s sandwiched between a laundromat, Culvers, and some hair salon, so don’t expect valet service or a red carpet when you see it. I was told about the tacos and tamales they serve here(in the back of the market) so I gave it a whirl. Well, we now call their tacos«bomb ass tacos,» and go there every time we are hungover, hungry, or on a day that ends in «y.» They have a few different kinds of tacos – steak, carnitas and lengua – all of which are double-wrapped in warmed corn tortillas and topped with cilantro and onions and salsa. These are some serious street tacos, and they are packed full of flavor! Steak is my fav, and then sometimes I’ll get a tamale on the side in case I’m feeling frisky. If you check this place out, just plan to pop in, grab a few tacos to go, and head home to eat. You could sit there at one of their plastic tables and watch futbal on a tube tv, but I prefer to put my comfy pants on and indulge without abandon. If you’re on the east side and want a quick taco(or three), this is a place to try!
