This place has everything you would expect to find in a place like this — if that makes sense. You won’t find your wedding dress here but you can get a charcoal grill, air compressor, wood chisel, hand saw, cabinet knobs, hinges, hooks, springs, shelves, poison ivy soap, pet food, thermometers, grass seed, flags or pool shock. This is the best place to have a key made — one that actually works. I had one made all over but finally the one made here actually works on my deadbolt. There’s a great paint section. You can have your knives sharpened here or rent a carpet cleaner. In addition to having almost everything you need here there’s plenty of folks around to help you. I think this makes stopping I here worth it. One thing that concerned me about living in Madison was the closest Home Depot is about a ½ hour away. Tuxis is great and I enjoy going to a locally owned place.

My family has lived along the Shoreline for over 25 years. My extended family over 100 years. We very much want to support small, local hardware stores. The good: They opened up the store, which helps the shopper. But, Tuxis is and has long been, the worst small hardware along the Shoreline for decades. — the hours stink. Especially on weekends. You are better off heading to Guilford(a classic but also with some flaws) or other Ace or True Value stores in the area. Especially in later afternoon on the weekend. — the prices are not cheap, not that one expects them to be but, the personal attention and expertise to go with the higher price is missing. Sadly, even Home Depot clerks are better. — some of the clerks are either curt, nasty or just not so smart(or all three). The not so smart ones, tend to be kind and do at least attempt to help you(usually failing). There are one or two good clerks but, who knows when they are there. The clerk at the register as you enter is usually the most curt or rude. Don’t ever bother to ask them for help.(It has been this way for 25 years!) It continues to amaze me that this store still operates for decades with all these troubles. It is only a matter of time before, finally, it closes or; hopefully, new owners take over and actually try to COMPETE on hours, service, inventory, variety, staff expertise, and politeness. We WANT a good hardware to remain(or exist!) in Madison, but decades of incompetence with Tuxis management do not bode well that this will be true in the next 25 years.

I’m not sure what one of the reviewers expects in a local hardware store, but this store is the best hands down… great service, fair prices, and a decent selection. They sharpen my chainsaw blades within a few days, always have a decent selection of lumber, fairly priced power tools, and always ready to help. When I first moved to Madison, they welcomed me to town with a discounted price, and free lumber cuts. This store reminded me of the days when I worked at Harrison’s hardware Milford, Ct. in the 70’s…nothing like a good olé country hardware store.

Every hardware store on the shoreline from Guilford to Clinton has it’s niche, Cashman’s in Clinton for small jobs and landscaping supplies, Landon Lumber for building supplies and lumber selection, Page’s in Guilford for upper end appliances, gifts hardware, etc and then there’s the old long time staple Tuxis Lumber which is a midsize hardware store with a smaller lumber yard that does a little bit of everything. Tuxis Lumber has two strong points, it’s central location in town by the railroad station and that it’s the only lumber yard open on Sundays for miles. If you need a sheet of ply or a couple of 2x4s on a Sunday you are coming here. Though it’s not the biggest store, Tuxis should have everything there for you to complete a big job. They have a good tool & hardware selection and are a Pittsburgh paint dealer and a True Value affiliate. Staff can be hit or miss at times, but most of the time they are pretty helpful.

I use to shop here before the Ace Hardware opened up in Clinton. Tuxis lumber is a very old store that seems like nothing has been done to it in years, and is not being well cared for. Ok selection, but not the best. Prices seem a lot higher than other area hardware stores. Staff is friendly that is the best they have going. They have lumber but not like Landon Lumber.

Undoubtedly the worst hardware store in the region. Their selection stinks, the staff is not helpful, and their hours are not convenient. My advice is to go to Pages Hardware. It’s the small town hardware store by which all others are measured. Apparently bird brain Charles H is too obtuse to understand the difference between honest advice and a shill. The truth is I’m not affiliated with Pages in any way. I have written over 400 reviews while Charlie boy has written 1 review. You pick the shill.
