April 6, 2016: Round two. Ding! **** I decided to give Scottie’s a second chance at off peak hours, in this case, 3 p.m. There were two experienced waitresses working and only four diners including myself. The lunchtime clutter was swept from under the tables into the aisles, but not binned. There was one ceiling fan going, and the Waltons was playing on the television. A leisurely late lunch is an understatement. I ordered a BBQ sandwich, fries, and sweet tea. In short, the sandwich was good, the fries were browned to perfection, super crispy, and tongue scorching hot — perfect, and the sweet tea was stellar. Service? Very good. Total bill? $ 8.00 even. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – April 5, 2016 *** My first visit to Scottie’s Bar-B-Q yielded mixed results. My Garmin steadfastly refused to recognize the name«Bar-B-Q,», but Scottie’s is only two blocks south of the main North-South two lane highway so it was very easy to spot. The parking lot is sizeable so there is adequate parking for even a big rig. In fact, a couple of trucks pulled in to get to go orders while I was there. The restaurant is deceptively large inside and it impressed me as being clean. Their sanitation rating at the time of this review is 97.0%. Ongoing up to date ratings may be found here: There were four waitresses working at lunchtime today, and for about ten minutes I was ignored by all of them. That’s not what I call getting off to the greatest start in forming my first impression. When a waitress finally showed up to take my drink order, I decided that I had better order food as well — or the wait could be lengthy. I ordered a barbecue sandwich with red barbecue coleslaw, and based on some nice looking food going by in the interim while waiting for a server, a hot dog. Coca-cola to drink. I noticed that it took my waitress about five minutes before she entered my order with the kitchen. I ordered Coke, but my waitress brought me sweet iced tea instead! Okay, I’m not hard to get along with, but come on. I said what the heck and tried their iced tea, and it turned out to be really exceptional. The only downside here is that they ignored my order which kinda bugs me. The food came out fairly quickly, which was a relief. BAR-B-Q, 3.5÷5. The barbecue sandwich($ 3.79) came with a generous amount of pork. The bun had been toasted on the outside… sometime, it was almost cold when I received the sandwich. The barbecue itself was piping hot and in my opinion it paired perfectly with the red barbecue coleslaw. One has a choice of either white or red coleslaw, and the red is definitely the way to go here. The pork itself was tender, slightly sweet, and very mild tasting. There was perhaps a slight hint of smoke in the burnt end pieces, but otherwise this is a very mild mannered Clark Kent barbecue sandwich. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the sandwich, because I did, and I would order it again. It’s a good barbecue sandwich and correctly priced. HOTDOG, 3.5÷5 I also ordered a hot dog all-the-way(ATW),($ 2.49). This was a typical southern slaw dog with mayo, mustard, white coleslaw, white onions, and piled high with meaty chili right down the center of the dog. It tasted as good as it looked. Unfortunately, it began to disintegrate immediately due to the watery mayo from the white coleslaw seeping into the bun. Eating the last half of the hot dog was a challenge. The only problem that I had with this hot dog, other than the disintegrating bun, was the fact that a single hot dog was $ 2.49 each. SWEETTEA, 5⁄5. As I said earlier, Scottie’s sweet tea is on point. It was about as good as it gets. If you like sweet iced tea at all — order this. It was not too sweet and there was plenty of ice… just right, really really good.($ 1.89) SERVICE, 2⁄5. Mixed thoughts on this subject. (1) Negative. Slow in approaching my table to take my order. (2) Negative. Slow to take my food order to the kitchen. (3) Negative. I was given the WRONG beverage. (4) Positive. My waitress had a sweet and polite demeanor. (5) Positive. I was asked if «I needed anything.» (6) Negative. My iced tea was not refilled even once. (7) Positive. I was offered and accepted a take home sweet tea for the road. So, I don’t know what to think about their wait staff. It’s too early to form an opinion, but it wasn’t an auspicious start — more wrong than right. My total bill was $ 8.50ish. Food: 4. Service: 2. Overall score first time out: 3.0 Would I go back? Yes, I would. The food was good. Service wasn’t the best, but there are good and not so good servers in every restaurant. It’s a part of life when dining in a restaurant.

Great family style restaurant. For six years now, I’ve worked with the Catawba Correctional Center as a volunteer. As such, I normally end up taking someone out to dinner at the expense of the volunteer group I belong to. For the past couple of years, we’ve gone to the buffet at the Western Steer but want to try someplace different and they approved Scottie’s in Maiden. The gentleman I was with, his eyes lit up when he saw, Baby Back Ribs on the Menu. I had the Angus Hamburger Steak with Okra and Potato Salad. Everything was delicious. The Potato Salad was good although a bit creamy. Not as good as the Western Steer but good nevertheless. Service was very good and the food was excellent. Meals are generally cooked to order which is an advantage to steam tables at buffet where things then to dry out and get overcooked. They do have good Wifi Strenght but you have to ask for the password. The volunteered the password even before I asked. Friendly place and I will definately be back.

I had brisket and ribs, its hard to find good BBQ, but this place is a rare find. Its not eastern BBQ, it’s like Tennessee style. Staff is friendly. Despite the rugged look, the service was good. I will be back again.

My husband and I eat here just about every Wednesday night. The staff is super friendly and the food is good. I love eating a hamburger all– the-way with fries and a sweet tea. Scottie’s Bar-B-Q is a staple in this small town. Oh, and the BBQ is delish!
