There’s little to no competition in this sleepy town so Makoto stands as one of the very few decent places to get your fill of chicken teriyaki and spicy salmon rolls. The bad news is that over the years this establishment has not been maintained well and is really starting to show a great deal of wear and filth. Just setting my phone down on the ledge near the table it actually got «stuck». The ventilation is poor and therefore the smell from the «onion volcano» smoke is utterly overwhelming. Service is friendly. Food quality is good, but not great. Scallops tasted fine but were gritty. Everything else tasted fine, a bit underwhelming. There is no alcohol making this experience a lot less fun if you’re not prepared, so bring your sake or plum wine with you.

Best hibachi and sushi around, owners mr tan and his wife are such a delight and always come over and greet every person. Never had a bad dish or bad server

I have always liked Makoto. The sushi is good quality and fresh and the Hibachi is delicious! I have always found the staff to be friendly and inviting. I do not think you will be disappointed!

Great food, at night this place gets very noisy however, that’s my only downside, i hear screaming like every 10 seconds but that’s okay, great atmosphere, expensive yes, but the food is well worth the cost. I was very satisfied.

The best sushi ever. Bringing a crowd next week. Tan is the greatest. Love coming here. We have our own table. The sashimi is so fresh and the rolls so different.

Expensive but if you want good food good time and happy atmosphere, it’s worth every penny!!!

We’ll have to say 1^st & only time we will ever grace this establishment. My wife & I both received under cooked scallops from Hibachi. She wound up in a lot of pain from this. Also the scallops were fairly gritty on top of this all.
Ordered the Johnny Special roll (seems to be a hit by other reviews). That was good, a bit of a mix but pulls together and we enjoyed it. Pork dumplings were ok. No special.
For dinner we ordered Hibachi shrimp & scallops. Well again nothing outstanding it was ok. Except for the scallops and their lack of cooking. Kids ordered chicken hibachi and it was again ok. Nothing special.
We paid $ 100.25 for 2 adult combo, 2 kids hibachi, 1 roll, pork dumplings. Wasn’t happy about quality to money ratio.
The décor needs a lot of help. Restaurant is fully showing its age. This is not what I expected by all the reviews and talk around town. I feel people’s expectations are very low. As far as I’m concerned Mt. Fuji in Lacey destroys Makoto on food and freshness.
Very disappointed.

Nothing special. I have been here 5−6times. Seems to have slipped. Place in need of a good cleaning. For sushi in Manahawkin try Elements.

My family and I just had a fantastic meal here, quality food, very well prepared by a very friendly and entertaining chef. The quantities are large, everything is tasty, especially the salmon which was out of this world. Our 3 children had a great time and all commented on how good the food was. The chef was also sensitive to seafood allergies and prepared all seafood last. Highly recommended.

Amazing. There are no words. Johnny Special Roll and Green Bay Roll. Every single time.

I’m hard to please… but I was impressed with this place. Food was delish! Great experience!

Top notch Sushi and Hibachi … We have revisited several times and have never been disappointed… always excellent fresh with fast and friendly service + good value. a pleasant surprise for this area (Long Beach Island/​Manahawkin) which is filled with mostly mediocre over priced «tourist trap» restaurants If you like Sushi you won’t be disappointed.

Lunch offerings are a good price and delicious.
Last time I was here unfortunately used the Ladies Room==not a good idea.

…it was a cold evening and we were heading up the Garden State HWY… and needed some food. It was about 9:30 and this place says they are open until 10:30pm so we were like «score». We walked in and the chefs were already sitting down and eating their late night meal but they still sat us anyways. The hostess/​waitress was very friendly and allowed us time to look over the menu. After our order was taken, I saw a couple of chefs head back into the kitchen (not sure if they even finished their meal). I kinda felt bad but not really since I was hungry
Our food came out after a short wait and it was on. We had the salmon teriyaki and the beef and scallion rolls, both were delicious. I was afraid since we were the last ones to be seated that they would rush us through our meal… I was afraid for no reason. They were so nice and didn’t rush us one bit.

The food was very good had creamy crab rolls to start they were delicious! then Habachi filet mignon and scallops excellent. Our chef was very entertaining and the service excellent … If you have a issue with salt just ask them to go lite in the soy sauce, I would go back, was a fun night!

Food here was good service was solid. All in all not a bad place at all.
I would go back again.

I’ve only ever order their sushi, I’ve been with people who have ordered dinners, but not hibatchi. Sushi has always been good, and they always have good specials for sushi rolls. Service has also always been good.
It’s a just a little small and loud inside.

We showed up here one night about 5 minutes before they were closing. The waitstaff was actually all sitting & eating dinner. No matter, they sat us!
Service was super fast, but since we were the only table, that’s not terribly surprising. The food was good, and for the value, certainly worth it. We split a few rolls, nothing fancy.
The staff was incredibly friendly, even though we were keeping them from leaving. I would definitely go back, during dinner time!

Always accomodating this vegan house. They are A-​ok with me :)
