Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia – Arlington to Haymarket

While I had some issues with this company– they have rectified them in a satisfactory manner.

They came to my home to do a repair.
First, the positive: They knew what they were doing and got it done without screwing around at all. This is what you would expect.
But, there was a significant cost… $ 168 for the first hour and $ 108 for each additional hour is TOO EXPENSIVE… you can probably find someone who will do a great job for 25%+ less. In addition to this, they round the figures for labor up in their favor. I chose not to argue against this because they came during the holidays.

I never give 5 stars but this company deserves it. I had a bad water leak and they have made multiple trips to fix everything that went wrong. They gave me pointers on how to keep my bill low by having certain supplies on hand. respectful qualified people– Mr Handyman (Manassas) is my one call handyman!

I would highly recommend Mr. Handyman for any household needs. I contacted Mr. Handyman and Rhonda made sure I was all set and answered any questions that I needed. She also called to make sure every thing was all set the day before my service. Afterwards she called to see if I was satisfied with the work done. The technician, Mr. Todd, was excellent and very professional. He went above and beyond to make sure that I was happy with the work he did. He also showed me how to properly maintain my HVAC unit. Very friendly and reliable service. I will definitely do business with this company again.

I did not hire them because communication was so poor. After reading some of the reviews, I may have dodged a bullet. I made the initial call and sent pics of what I wanted done. I missed the return call so attempted to call the agent back. You can’t direct call anyone; you have to leave a name and number with whomever answers the phone and your agent has to call you back. Well, I can’t always answer the phone at work we played phone tag a few times and eventually they stopped calling and so did I.

I would give them zero stars, if possible. Buyers beware: they do not follow instructions and engaged in tasks not authorized, and then proceeded to charge me for the unauthorized work.

My lessons from Mrhandyman are 1.) Don’t do business with any company that will not give you a free written estimate 2.) Don’t use a company that charges $ 106 per hour 3.) Don’t use a company that charges a minimum $ 268 for coming to your home 4.) Don’t use a company that does not provide details about their billing charges. I tried to use MrHandyman to re-​install some siding that blew off my home in Gainesville, Virginia in July 2014. They quoted a price of $ 268 – 480 on the phone. They charged me $ 268 for showing up and looking at the damage. They said the siding would just blow off again and they needed to replace part of my home’s structure (the siding had been up for 10 years and blew off under high winds). They increased their bid form $ 480 max to $ 2,945 which did not include the $ 447 for their 1^st visit. They duct taped a cheap piece of plastic over the damaged area which blew off the next day under light winds. The owner refused to come out and reattach the plastic unless I paid another service charge and pay for 2 guys for 2 hours @ $ 106 an hour. They charged me $ 447 during their first visit without doing any work except tapping the cheap plastic to my house that blew off the next day. I had another contractor repair the siding this week for $ 850 total and it looks great. The new contractor gave me a free bid after looking at the damage of $ 850. My new contractor told me there was no reason to replace the original house «rack» structure that Mrhandyman wanted $ 2954 to replace. My neighbors said charging $ 447 for the work Mrhandyman did is outrageous. Worst company that I have ever encountered in my 61 years of living.

Had called to schedule an estimate for roof repair. Took the time off work for the scheduled appointment. Tech they sent couldn’t do roof estimates. So, apparently there was a scheduling issue– mistakes happen, no big deal. However, I would appreciate someone acknowledging the time wasted; they charge for estimates, so i feel like they think their time is more valuable than mine (i.e., if I had screwed up instead of them, they would still charge me for the estimate, right?).
I wouldn’t work with them if I didn’t have to– but because of my landlord, I’m stuck. I really hope they change my mind about their customer service.

I wish I could provide feedback on their work, but I can’t. I spoke with their «answering service» about a week ago outlining the work I needed done and was told they’d call me back. They never did. Next!

Nice people but slow, definitely do not move with any sort of speed. At $ 165 an hour, should have been much better. I would recommend another handyman. Most charge no more than $ 99 and are much faster. These guys are milking the hourly rate. Just like the other reviews, complained to Jo but she defended their work. This is a scam to me.

We had a horrible problem with our house – we discovered that a load-​bearing wall was not supported down to the foundation wall! We called Mr. Handyman and were extremely pleased. They do charge to give an estimate, and the estimate was high, but very detailed. We decided that they had the know-​how to do this job. In fact, they did it in about six hours rather than nine, and let us do some of the work to lower the cost. They definitely knew what they were doing, and ended up finishing up almost $ 1K below their original estimate. The owner stopped by, she and her husband own the business and all of the workers are real experts in the trades. They are honest in the extreme. I would not hesitate to use them again (our job was a real complex one, so that’s why the estimate had to cover every contingency – but they found a way to keep down the cost). I’m an engineer’s daughter, so I know they did a good job. Excellent folks. Ask your neighbors, I see their trucks in the area all the time, that’s because they are honest and reliable. They did the job two days after the estimate and that was important too.

I’ve had wonderful experiences with this company. They installed a ceiling fan in an open ceiling family room for me as well as an attic vent fan. Through no fault of the handyman, additional supplies were needed for the ceiling fan job that were not on his van. Instead of having him leave to go buy the supplies, I ran to the hardware store and got the supplies while he continued to work on another project in my house. No time was lost and I paid for my own additional supplies. Truly, there was no way to predict that those supplies would have been needed. The handyman has always been on time and has never left a mess in my house. The owner of the company is a military veteran who strives for and delivers quality work. This company is as good as it gets!

I engaged this company for some work. I paid over 1100 dollars for labor including 135 for supplies. What bothered me the most was a trip to the hardware store to pick up some supplies cost me almost 150 dollars in labor. (he was gone for 1 ½ hours) I never saw any receipts from the supplies that were bought nor was I offered to keep anything that was left over.
When I expressed how unhappy I was about the amount of work that was done for my 1000 dollars, I got nothing from the owner except defense of her workman.
I would comment on the work that was done except that it was not all complete and I wound up finishing some of it myself.
Next time I will engage someone locally and stay away from the franchise chains with their large overhead costs.

About 3 years ago I had a bad experience with this company. I had a leak in my home and could not figure out the cause. Every time it rained my basement would flood and a musty smell lingered throughout my house. I tried different handyman companies in the area, but all were a disappointment. They were not dependable, didn’t get the job done right or left an incredible mess. During this time, a contractor from Mr. Handyman came by. He simply looked at the exterior of my house, pointed to an area below the patio door as a possible vulnerable spot, but told me he could not fix it. He charged me $ 50 and left. I was fuming. For the next couple of years I continued my search for a good handyman, but to no avail. Last month I was determined to resolve this issue. I searched again for a service. But choices were limited. I decided to give Mr Handyman a shot. I called the company and spoke with the co-​owner, Jo McCabe. I told her about my past experience with company a few years ago. She told me that she and her brother bought the company in Sep 08 and were determined to launch a successful business in Prince William County. Talking with Jo gave me a sense of ease. She was enthusiastic, professional and really listened to my concerns. After explaining the company policy and the 2-​hour minimum ($ 98/​hr), I decided to schedule an appointment. On the day of the initial estimate I was feeling anxious. Although I had a good feeling talking with Jo, I couldn’t help but have flashbacks of the past experiences. I wanted a morning appointment, but I did not want to sit home and wait 4 – 5 hours for a contractor to show up. Jo explained that if you made a morning appointment, the contractor WILL be there at 8am. Well, on that day at 8am on the dot, the Mr. Handyman van pulled up to my house. I greeted the contractor at the door. He was courteous and respectful. But I was not sold just yet. I showed him the problem area. He inspected the interior and the exterior of the home, and discovered the problem in about 30 seconds. I was amazed. He took some measurements and explained exactly what should be done to correct this issue once and for all. Needless to say I called the company and booked an appointment for the work. On the day of the service call I was hopeful. Again, the contractor showed up at 8am on the dot. He got to work right away on the exterior. I wanted to see how things were progressing, so he showed me exactly what he was doing. The exterior repairs were done in about 2 ½ hours. Then he began work on the interior. He had to remove some drywall and the damaged wood. Then he left to get supplies and returned in about 30 – 40 minutes. It was a very laborious effort, but he worked for hours and stayed until the job was done. He was a true professional in every respect. He made final touch ups and then cleaned up the area. Now the entire space looks pristine. It was money well spent. The other day we finally got some rain. Lo and behold, no leak and no musty smell! I definitely plan to work with this company again.
