Bates Chiropractic

Was referred to Dr Bates through a friend.
I have been dealing with cronic lower back pain for as long as I can remember. I tried pretty much everything, including other chiropractors with not results.
Dr Bates might have a sales plan but it works! After seeing him for a few weeks, I still have a long way to go but for the first time ever I am feeling better!

I am not a big reviewer, but I really thought I had to write this personal opinion based upon my interactIon with Mr. Bates. First of all he goes into a big sales job about the benefits of chiropractic work. I threw out my back and went to my general practitioner who had x-​rays taken at Torrence Memorial. I was sure to bring those to «Dr» Bates. According to the radiologist, there was NO disc issues or degeneration or any other issue noted. Thats the reason I was willing to try a chiropractor. He starts out by saying these are no good and regular doctors don’t understand the spine. He then proceeds to shoot 4 or 5 X-​rays, utilizing horrible X-​ray protocol. No lead bibs or draping anywhere. Then does a «physical» examination and tells me I have three significant areas of alignment issues. OK doc, ready to get adjusted. Instead he sends me home and says ice my back and come back tomorrow. Am I going to get adjusted then? Apparently not ! He comes in with Chiropractic collateral and goes on for almost 15 minutes repeating the entire history of what I told him yesterday. I said yes doc, I know all this, I told you this yesterday. Then he proceeds to say ok lets look at the X-​rays. He starts out by saying I have good news and bad news. Bad news, your back is in very bad shape (despite a board certified Radiologist saying he could see nothing wrong). He goes on to say, that the good news I can fix you. He then begins to ask me to guess how bad the X-​ray is. I stop him and say look doc, my cardiologist doesn’t give me my graph on my heart and ask me to guess how bad it is. I said are you going to adjust me or not. He goes into full sales mode and says I have the optimal solution but its going to depend on your financial commitment and willing to be a team player. I said, I am not making a financial commitment, if your adjusting helps, I will stay with it, if not I am moving on. He proceeds to sell me some more about the benefits of chiropractic therapy. I said, one more time are you going to adjust me or just waste my time? I finally just said forget it, got up and left. THIS IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF GUY WHO GIVES THE WHOLE STUDY OF CHIROPRACTIC A BAD NAME. SHAME ON YOU DOC. STOP SELLING AND START HEALING.

If they cared about people they wouldn’t wait weeks to try to scam you into a 3x a week prepaid treatment plan after expensive X-​rays that they won’t even let you keep. I really wanted to go there but I couldn’t help feel so dirty walking out of there. Help! I need a great chiropractor

Wish I could give this place a zero star review but let me start of by saying I have not read any of the other reviews…
I am a motorcycle technician and I work on my feet all day in weird positions and on top of that I practice jui jitsu four times a week… well something happened and I was in pain… not the hey my back feels kinda sore today pain I’m talking the horrible pain that doesn’t let you sleep and when you do wake up good luck getting up from bed.
I saw the stars on this place and decided to give it a shot and on top of that it had a fifty dollar credit for any session so I figured why not… I called and made an appointment.
Monday I go in and wait… I’m called in by the receptionist and she goes over some basics… no biggie. She proceeds to tell me about different spinal conditions and tries to sell me on some package deal of treatment plans??? I politely ask her how she was trying to sell me anything before the «DR.» Even saw me… she explained he would be in shortly
In comes the «dr.» (I’m using the quotes because he is not a doctor, forget the papers on the wall) he gives me the exact same lines that she did… (sounds like it was all pretty well rehearsed) and proceeds to tell me that he needed to take xrays to properly diagnose the issue… blah blah blah I agree and somehow it costs me 50 bucks for xrays they say I can request to keep … WITH TEN DAYS NOTICE!!!
Thay was monday I go back on wednsday for a follow up to the xrays and find out what is going on … in comes the receptionist blah blah blah she gives me the whole diagnosis and tries ohhh so hard to sell me on a 40 session plan!!! That’s when I said woah woah woah hold on these are my exact words «with no disrespect who the hell are you. normally when a doctor gives his patients the news… the doctor does it personally not thru his secretary. I’ve spent over two hours at this clinic and this „dr. Bates“ has only seen me for a total of five minutes.» I was literally in so much pain I had to tell the girl with pain in my eyes that I will literally pay anything for the doctor to relieve my pain… long story short another fifty dollars and a four minute lower back cracking session and I got the hell out of there…
I ended up going to epic chiropractic and am now a loyal patient over at epic… if your in the south bay forget bates go to Epic on Crenshaw

I was injured while at a pole fitness class and when I say injured, I mean I could not move my left arm I was in so much pain. It was hard for me to do everyday activities like getting dressed. I tried a foam roller, I tried massage, ice, cold compress, Bio-​Freeze and rest but I was still in very bad pain a week later! On a Friday, at about 4pm I called Bates Chiropractic I had no idea it was walking distance from my work at the time, and the doctor was not in. Fortunately, the woman who took my call had empathized with my pain and actually gave me his cell phone number!
I left a message on his voice-​mail and received a call back within about 15 mins! He was out of the office that day but actually told me he would come in for me. I could not believe it! I walked over and he did an x-​ray, talked to me about my issue and explained why this occurred. Honestly, I was not sure I believed that my spine could play such a huge role in the pain that was going down my left back and to the front of my breast, it seemed impossible. He was in his workout clothes so I know he really did come in on his off time to see me and that meant a lot to me. He was very caring and knowledgeable but the BEST part was that with only one adjustment after reviewing my x-​rays, I woke up the next morning virtually pain free! How? I don’t even know. It seemed impossible.
I was able to enjoy my vacation that weekend without the pain I was having just one day before! I am still gradually healing but what a difference it made. He definitely knows his stuff!

Great Doc, very friendly Staff and it feels like you’re going to a hometown doc office. I have to bring my little one with me and we are always welcomed. Fast service and I feel 100% better after the adjustment!

What a great place to heal physically and mentally! Your spines mobility and proper alignment solves so many problems. I am an athlete and always come in for regular visits because i know how important maintaining the foundation of your body is! I would not be able to move and be agile the way you need to when competing at a high level. Another benefit from going to Dr. Bates is how much quicker i recover after training sessions. Dr. Bates is the most positive and helpful person and has helped me tremendously. He has never adjusted me the same twice he has always checked my whole spine before adjusting. Thank you Dr. Bates and staff for making my life even better!!!

Dr. Bates has helped me get from stuggling with chronic neck and back pain to a much healthier place in 90 days. I had no idea that my breathing and sinus issues would be conquored and I haven’t taken a Claritin for over 2 months. The main issue I have is sciatica, and though the incredible pain wasn’t attacked directly with chiropractic care, the adjustments really helped me stay in shape as I waited out the nerve issue. The entire office is really friendly and easy to work with. Dr. Bates is really special — he gives you his cell number!

Bates is the worst. He spends about 2 minutes working on you and at the end he doesn’t help… you can only hope that he doesn’t make your problem worse. My best advise is to afford Bates Chiropractic!

Chiropractor = Adjustment, right?! NOPE. Not here. I was turned away from getting an adjustment because they wanted to do xrays & schedule a follow up visit before they would give me an adjustment. I have no recent injury, I just needed an adjustment to help with scoleosis (sp?) back pain.
I had to get up about 2 hours early to make it before work, I wasted about 45 minutes in the office. Totally disappointed!
I was referred to Palmer Chiropractic right down the street. Soooooooo happy with Dr. Palmer! Go to Bates Chiro if you have an injury or need long term chiro care. Go to Dr. Palmer if you need a good adjustment.

Went in for back and neck pain. They made me buy $ 200 worth of equipment to use at home. The treatment was really too intense. He was trying to correct a spine imbalance that has developed over 30 years in 30 days. I stopped doing the at home exercises and going in after 2 weeks because I was hurting more after each treatment!
I ended up finding a great orthopedic surgeon who agreed with the underlying problems, but she is treating it totally differently — with rest, followed by strengthening exercises and better habits.

It all started on 11.23.08, CVS had a health fair. I did several test. This lady did a couple of tests on my back neck, found a problem, an existing one .(I believed her, she didn’t know me or anything about me) I have had a back problem for over 5 yrs. Any way cut a long story short .I was referred to Dr. Bates (a great chiropractor). I can honestly say I have been helped. My first session was very successful. I slept like a baby, I had a wonderful bowel movement (I suffer from a bad case of constipation for years) I thank you very much Dr. Bates. You are God sent to help to people, God bless you.

Dr. Rob is by far the best Chiropractor I’ve ever met! He took the time to take x-​rays of my spine and explain why I was experiencing the problems I was. Plus, he’s so precise! It only takes him a few minutes to adjust me!
I LOVE it, I’m in and out and feeling great in no time! What makes me give him 5 stars is the fact that he put the power of health and well-​being in my hands! He «prescribed» me specific exercises to do at home to correct my spine!
For all the nay-​sayers, Chiropractic is not a wonder-​pill, you cant take just one and be done! It’s part of a healthy lifestyle-​like eating well and exercising. He gives you all the information so you can make the decision for yourself. And boy, am I glad I invested in myself!

I really like this office. It’s different from other Chiropractic office’s I’ve been too. The front desk girls are really nice and Dr. Bates seems to be really passionate about healthy living. He does free workshops too. So far I’ve been to one on the immune system and one on nutrition. I really enjoyed them and learned a lot. On top of them being free he allows you to bring friends or family even if they are not patients of the office. I took my girlfriend and her mom with me last time; they both loved it and they weren’t pressured to sign up at all. He seems to just want to spread the word about healthy living which is awesome!
My husband has been coming here longer than I have. Ever since he started going to Dr. Bates office I saw a big change in his health issues. Now that I’ve been coming here, I love it. If I have a headache, I get adjusted and instantly my headache goes away. I have a lot of issues with my back and I feel like coming here is really helping.
I read some of the reviews below about this place being a «scam». I honestly don’t think it is. I am always skeptical about new places I go to. I’m a massage therapist and went to school and took Anatomy, Pathology, Kinesthesiology, etc., so I know a lot on how the body as a whole works. So a lot of the stuff Dr. Bates says is right on and totally makes sense.

This place is a total scam.
I went to Bates Chiropractic because I had very specific back pain. I was not treated for my issue, but instead was given an exhaustive and expensive regimen to problems I did not come in for.
They required that I got a $ 50 X-​ray before discussing my problem, and when I took the photos out of the envelope before I was supposed to, the assistant snatched them out of my hand. When I left, I asked if I could have my X-​rays and they said no. Honestly, the glimpse I caught it didn’t look like my back. I have a metal plate in my left shoulder which would have shown up.
I am absolutely dumbfounded that people actually trust this man. He is not a doctor. Go sell cars Mr. Bates, and please do not attempt to treat me for problems I don’t have.

Wow, what a shyster! This man is not a doctor, he’s a salesman, and if you do not give him your money he will personally insult you and tell you you do not care about your health. He may seem charming and nice but so do any salesmen. He will tell you that despite the fact that you have never, ever had any back or neck pain, never had a bad checkup by a legitimate doctor, and never had any reason to start seeing a chiropractor, that you should start seeing him three times a week.
He doesn’t even spend five minutes on your adjustment. He will throw you on the table, snap your bones, and throw you out, but he’s happy to take the time to tell you all about how much money you need to spend to get better from a problem you don’t actually have.
He charges exorbitant amounts, unless, of course, you pay almost a thousand dollars up front for a 40-​visit plan, then you get a discount. Because apparently to him, the medical profession is a fun little store and the more you buy, the more you save! Whether you need it or not, he’ll sell it to you.
Save your money and your poor bones. Go see a real chiropractor. I see Dr. Bob Benaderet in Long Beach that charges $ 25 per session (without some scam 40-​session contract), and you get far more than you get with «Dr.» Bates. You get an hour on a real heated massage table to loosen you up, an evaluation of what is actually bothering you that day, and a proper adjustment that he takes his time to do right, and never, ever, ever has to insult you to try to get you to see him or pushes you to see him more than you want to or need to.
Even if you don’t see my chiropractor, find a different one. Don’t see Dr. Bates. Your body will thank you later.
Edit: After reading many reviews, apparently his popular spiel/​scam is to tell people that they are in such bad condition that they NEED to come see him three times a week! I have been to many chiropractors but have never seen any of them try to scam their patients like that. What a shame that people believe him. They’re going to be regretting it in a few years.

I found Dr. Bates through my company’s In Network list, looked at the reviews, and decided to check him out. I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, they squeezed me in the next day – even though they had no availability until after the weekend – because I told them how much pain I was in. After telling me there was nothing available, Dr. Bates had them call me back and have me come in the next day so he could adjust me. What service!
His office is neat and clean and full of useful items to help loosen you up and right yourself on your own before even heading in to get adjusted. The staff are extremely kind, knowledgeable, and helpful, and they’re ready and willing to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. They were also very flexible with me about how I paid for my visits, considering my insurance company is kind of a joke when it comes to how they cover chiropractic care.
Dr. Bates himself is very personable and gentle when doing the adjustments – but not so gentle that he doesn’t get it done! I’m feeling better now that I’ve been going to see him on a regular basis, and I definitely feel like my phase 2 subluxation will get better from here on out.
My only complaint would be that there’s no parking – only street parking, and it’s metered, so a visit can cost an extra 75c to $ 2, depending on when you get there and how long your visit takes. 75 cents may not seem like a lot, but when you’re on a budget and have to go three times a week, all that parking can add up. Still, the doctor himself is worth the extra few bucks a week, because he – and his staff – are great!

I went to Bates Chiropractic approximately a year ago. I was suffering from lower back pain, a pelvic imbalance, and sciatica. Many caring individuals told me I was foolish to endure such extreme discomfort; that surgical intervention was necessary. Having read everything I could get my hands on about back surgery, I decided I would first try a holistic approach. Dr. Rob adjusted me twice a week, instructed me on particular exercises for my condition, and was there for regular counseling. From one day to the next, the imbalance was corrected, and I am free from pain.
I recommend this business whole heartedly!

Let me start off by saying that I’m in my 40s and have been to several other chiropractors in the past so I have an idea of who knows what they are doing and who doesn’t. I was having a small amount of soreness in my lower back and only wanted one adjustment. I scheduled an appointment on the phone and specifically requested an adjustment.
When I get there, I got an hour long spheel about how a ‘perfect back and neck are supposed to look etc’ and even got quizzed on it! X-​rays were taken and I never even got an adjustment. I asked the doctor about it and he said he was too busy and I would have to come back (which meant paying even more money). I made another appointment and finally got an adjustment (at this point I should have gone somewhere else). But before even getting an adjustment, I was shown my x-​rays and told what terrible shape my back was in and that it was going to cost $ 2000 and taken 3 months to get it repaired… seriously? I’ve never felt so much pressure to buy something in my life. How would they know it would take 3 months and what real doctor asks you to prepay for services?
I’m in great health, work out on a regular basis, teach boxing for a living and am at a very healthy weight… no way is my back in that bad of a shape. It’s very clear that Dr. Bates pays his staff on commissions and how many «packages» they can sell. Never, never, never will I go back nor will I recommend this place to anyone I know. This office needs to make a certain amount each month to pay its rent and do whatever they need to do to make that money. They don’t care about the patients, only their pocketbooks.

Like son, like father? Apparently so. I had the good fortune of discovering Dr. Rob’s son, Aaron Bates when I lived in Camarillo. It was a miracle because he cured a case of sciatica that no one else could. So naturally when I moved back to L.A., I was worried about where I was going to continue my care. Thank goodness Dr. Rob is close enough for me to continue with the same quality care I’d received from his protégé son.
Dr. Rob’s techniques are indeed unique. They involve active care and empower you to work on your own to heal yourself between visits. He has some magical adjustments that I’ve not encountered anywhere else — and I’ve been to a few chiro’s over the years.
If you’re looking for a real solution and not just palliative care, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Bates, Sr.
