I had a bad experience with this broker agency and continue to be harassed by them, even though my apt search is over (I did not go with any of their listings). They showed me a few listings in the Inwood area. I had scheduled an appointment to meet with one of the brokers (through his assistant; really, is he that important??), but after talking to me for about 10 minutes, he passed me off to two other brokers for the actual viewings. One of them was brand new and was just along for the ride (he was really nice), but the other was extremely unprofessional – in many ways, but I will only highlight the ones that affected my ability to get the information I needed. First, he did not bring a cell phone with him and kept asking to borrow mine or my friend’s at every building to call the super or call back to his office (Really? What kind of salesperson does not have a cell phone? Even my anti-​establishment, hippie younger brother finally broke and got a cell phone). And he didn’t seem to know anything about the neighborhoods or the buildings. At one building, I asked him if it was a safe area. He shrugged and said «Yeah.» Not helpful or reassuring. So, I reworded the question to see if I could gather better information: «Would I be safe coming home here at 2am?» There was a pause, during which I saw a look quickly cross his face – a look of fear/​disgust – before he shrugged again and said «Yeah.» He was clearly lying! I do not expect brokers to 1) Tell the absolute truth, or 2) Know the crime statistics of every block in detail, but don’t blatantly lie to me to appease me! He lost my trust and never gained it back. This whole day was a series of me asking questions and him shrugging responses, and none of the listings were even that appealing. So, though I wish I had not wasted my time, I was content to just move on from the experience and not mess with this agency again.
That’s when it got weird. It has been weeks since I’ve had any dealings with them, and I have now gotten at least 11 calls from them, asking if I’m still looking (it’s annoying, but also sort of comical because it’s getting ridiculous). It’s usually a different person every time, and the message will be something to effect of: «We’re calling to see if you’re still looking for an apartment, please give us a call back if you are so we can help you find something.» Per these instructions, I have not returned the calls, due to the fact that my non-​response should give them the information they’re looking for. Plus, I don’t have time to return calls to people I don’t want to talk to. I was able to pick up once, and the broker I spoke with said he would take my name off the list. That was four calls ago! Please stop harassing me!
