DO NOT live here, I beg you. I had an almost identical experience as Elle. Management and the Super (Gabriel) are pleasant when you live there, but then magically become incredibly rude, dismissive and sneaky when you move out. (Extra regret that I tipped the super so much money at Christmas time.)
Like Elle, I planned my move far in advance, but when it was time for Gabriel to come inspect my apartment, he was held up for hours while I was being charged by the hour by my movers. He claimed he was attending to other tenants and it absolutely couldn’t wait. I ended up having to leave with my movers after I was racking up hundreds of dollars in extra charges because Gabriel just couldn’t tear himself away from whatever he was doing for a quick 10-​minute inspection. I ended up having to come in the following week during the day/​my working hours for the apartment inspection – a HUGE inconvenience. How lucky that I was just moving to another borough and not to another state…
To add insult to injury, like another reviewer, I was also told by the super that one amount would be deducted from my security deposit during my final apartment inspection, only to receive my security deposit check and find out FOUR TIMES that amount was taken out of my deposit (with ZERO indication of what the charges was for). My apartment was pristine when I left it, and the super had even commented on what great shape it was in.
So after all the trouble of having to wait around on moving day and then come back another day, it all didn’t even matter because apparently they just keep whatever they want from your security deposit and refuse to provide an explanation. My e-​mails to the leasing manager requesting an explanation went unanswered. After several, she responded that the explanation would be mailed to me, although she didn’t even ask for a new address to mail it to, so that was weird… After I realized she didn’t actually have a mailing address for me, I supplied one. Of course, I never received anything.
This place is a complete scam – save your money and live somewhere, anywhere, else, and never an Equity Residential property. The front desk guys and porters were always really wonderful, but the management here are terrible people. It looks nice and shiny on the outside, but this is the worst place I have lived in in all of NYC.

After awful experiences with our move-​out and security deposit, my boyfriend and I are left with a horrible opinion of this place. I’m only giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because living here was on the whole a pretty good experience. Some of the pros:
— The front desk staff was helpful and friendly.
— The gym and laundry facilities were clean and well-​kept.
— Being able to pay rent online through the Equity Residential website was convenient.
The move-​out was another matter entirely. Long story short — despite calling and emailing the building manager over and over, and confirming with the front desk multiple times, on our move-​out day the movers were told that there was nothing in the system and that we didn’t have a reservation for the elevator. This meant that several times throughout the day, the movers were stuck in the lobby, charging us $ 175/​hour for time when they couldn’t do any actual work. Ivan at the front desk was sympathetic and tried to help, but the building manager continued to be MIA.
But the worst was yet to come. A few weeks after we moved out, we received a check for our security deposit that was substantially less than we were expecting — without any explanation for why. We’d left the apartment in great shape, even using spackle to fix the small holes left behind by wall hangings and floating shelves. After finding out the details, it turned out that in addition to charging us for routine painting and cleaning, Equity Residential also withheld nearly $ 400 for a few minor scratches on the floor. The total amount of deductions was over $ 700. And they held strong even when we objected and pointed out that they weren’t supposed to charge us for normal wear and tear.
Neither one of us has ever had any money held back from a security deposit before, and between the two of us, we’ve lived in quite a few buildings, both in NYC and elsewhere.
(Equity Residential also jacked up the rent significantly in our renewal offer, but then listed it online for the same amount that we had been paying. But in the end, good riddance — we’re much happier in our new place, which is both bigger and cheaper.)
Bottom line — if you move in here, be prepared to be nickel and dimed.
