I didn’t know what to expect when I booked my first appointment with Deborah. I knew a little about Chinese medicine from clips of Dr. Oz, but it was still very much a mystery to me when I decided to give it a try. A friend of mine had been complaining of certain ailments for months, but she refused to see more physicians about it since they usually prescribed her some pills and sent her on her merry way. She wanted a natural solution to her problems and I, being the good friend that I am, agreed to tag along on this adventure of hers. It turned out to be an eye-​opening experience for me as well.
When I received the questionnaire (you know, the one where they ask you to map out your entire medical history in a series of yes or no questions and blank spaces), I was surprised at how thorough the forms were. There was even a section on the second page that required me to circle the areas of the body that I was concerned about. The wait wasn’t long at all. In fact, while my friend was receiving acupuncture treatment in another room, she stepped outside to meet with me and go over my history. I appreciated that time because she looked at my health not only from a physical perspective, but an emotional and mental one as well. The answer to every question led to another question until my chronic fatigue, dramatic weight fluctuations, and unpredictable menstrual cycles fell under a very reasonable explanation — one that looked at my well being as a whole. I’ve had doctors who have looked at me for two minutes before declaring me well or unwell, without regard for my input. Deborah was the exact opposite of that. She listened to everything I had to say with a generous ear and kept delving deeper and deeper into my condition and history. I decided to put my faith in her and try acupuncture before I left.
The needles didn’t hurt at all. She pricked and prodded me as I lay on a comfortable examination table, the only sensations coming from the electrified nerves of my body. I was intimidated at first but it was a painless procedure for the most part. She talked to me throughout the first few minutes, making small talk to ease my worries. Eventually I stopped needing it and almost fell asleep with the lights off and a heat lamp positioned over my prickly torso. I noticed a change almost immediately. While I normally would’ve been begging for coffee around 5pm, I had a surplus of energy that day and it has continued throughout the past week. I have slept better, my cravings for fatty foods have been curbed to some degree, and I feel more awake during the day. I’ve taken to heart her advice about half-​baths, regular running, and proper nutrition and look forward to beginning a diet program with her in the future.

I had my first acupuncture experience from Deborah. Although I am terrified of needles, I felt reassured with Deborah as she made every effort to explain everything thoroughly. She truly cares for her patients and has their well being in mind. I totally recommend her!

Deborah is educated in the ways of traditional Chinese medicine from the motherland of Chinese medicine: China! It definitely shows in her grasp of the subject matter. She’s very thorough in her explanations on what she’s doing and why she’s doing it, which is helpful when you’re wondering why she’s poking you in a particular spot. Deborah was extremely helpful and professional. I’d never done acupuncture before and she intentionally explained every movement and step. I’d definitely recommend to anyone looking into eastern medicine.
