Dr. Hope Langer

Saw Dr. Langer today, and she was friendly, personable, competent and efficient. It’s never fun to have a gynecological exam, but I have no complaints. I was seen promptly, she took time to answer my questions and i was done in a half hour.

While she is a perfectly OK doctor, her staff is the worst I have ever encountered. You will be put on hold and forgotten when you call to make an appointment. And do not ever ask them to refill a prescription by phone. I have called 5 times now and cannot get them to refill a critical prescription. This is not an exaggeration: they left the prescription in my file, forgetting about it for two weeks. The next time I called they faxed the prescription to the wrong number. My mail order pharmacy said the doctor’s office would not return their calls. Three days ago I got desperate and asked them to forget about the mail-​order pharmacy — and instead use a local pharmacy. Dr. langer’s office said the prescription was called into the drug store. When I went to pick it up the pharmacy said it was never called in.
They are beyond incompetent and I plan on making a complaint to a state licensing board. Really — cross her office off your list.

Excellent doctor, I can recommend her to everyone ! Good work ethic. I have been very happy with her all along, west care medical is a trustworthy place.

Dr Langer has been my OB/​GYN for the past 9 years after I had a horrific experience at another practice. I have always found her to be the consummate professional. She is warm, caring and extremely competent. I have never had a painful examination, the office is always spotless. The reception staff may not be the friendliest but I’m not looking to make new friends! I trust her implicitly, if I have any concerns, she always returns my calls in a timely manner. I have recommended her to lots of my friends and will take my daughter to her in due time.

I want to give 3 stars, but only to give this doctor the benefit of the doubt. I will never go back, but you should decide for yourself. Here is my experience below.
1) PAINFUL EXAMINATIONS — I’ve been through DOZENS of OB/​GYN exams, and they have all been happily uneventful. Usually, I just pay the bill, thank the doctor, and then go out for a coffee. With Dr. Langer it was PAINFUL. I mean, really painful. I kept doing yoga breaths and telling myself, «this will be over soon.» I was surprised that a woman would inflict this kind of pain on another woman. It definitely left me feeling violated. I had 2 exams with her, and decided I would never let her examine me again.
2) NURSE AND OFFICE STAFF —
The receptionist is usually on a personal call or checking her text messages while she’s talking to you. Sometimes she’s eating behind the desk. Some people might not be bothered by this, but I find it unprofessional.
Dr. Langer’s nurse doesn’t really speak to you, she just commands. Any doctor’s visit can make you feel vulnerable and exposed, but the OB/​GYN particularly so. I don’t need fake warmth (let’s face it, we’re in NYC), but if the patient is about to take their clothes off and put their legs in stirrups, you should make them feel comfortable, not defensive.
I didn’t get the impression she liked her job, or maybe she was just afraid of making a mistake. I don’t know. Either way, she was in attack mode. Maybe she grew up in the Bronx, who knows?
3) Tests and procedures — suspicious
Again, I gave 3 stars because I don’t have medical training, and it’s possible that I needed extra procedures. Each time I went in, she said I needed another procedure because things looked «suspicious», and that she wanted to see me the following week. The problem was, her availability was scarce, and I could only get appointments after several weeks.
My sister-​in-​law is a doctor, and she told me that doctors will reschedule appts for 3 weeks or more, because after 3 weeks they can write another «ticket» to the insurance companies. So, what should have been resolved in perhaps a matter of 2 weeks, took over 2 months. When my results all came back negative, she told me to come back in 6 months for another exam. If I’m pefectly healthy, why do you need to see me again?
So, it is possible that I needed those procedures, and it’s entirely possible that she was overbooked and couldn’t see me. Still, it caused me over 2 months of unnecessary worry and panic.
So, decide for yourself. I won’t be going back. Ever.

Can’t say I’ve had the same experience as the other two reviewers.
Dr. Langer was very personable, professional, and efficient. She wasn’t preachy when I told her I smoked: I’m a grown woman; I know it’s bad for me!
As for the exam itself, she was swift, efficient, yet gentle: this was the most painless pap I’ve ever had. I definitely found a doctor I’ll keep.
