Before I moved to New York I certainly couldn’t get as equally excited about slightly-elitist consumer culture as I can now. My value system is rather screwed up. So yeah, you like shopping. As a newyorker, you think it’s one of the good things in life. You’re in your early 30s, you discovered Americana on the blogs or you got to it really late when GQ started telling you that the idea/concept behind J Crew’s most recent collections was the coolest thing ever. You did your research, you got to the point where you want the shit that no one else rocks. You look at Japanese blogs –only the pictures and the brand name matters– you don’t care if you can’t read anything else on those pages. Welcome to Extra then, a tiny buzzer-controlled shop in a tiny alley off 1st Street(@ Bowery) ran by über-nice Japanese surf and vintage clothing connoisseurs Koji Kusakabe. The store is impeccably edited and stands out against all the traditional boutiques that make New York the capital of shopping. Furniture, vintage collectables, many one-of-a-kind pieces that are just nice to take a look at while Koji tells you the story behind them. Clearly thou’, you came here to check out the largest selection of Post Overalls pieces you can find west of Tokyo. Don’t know the brand? Do the research. Koji is good friend with designers Takeshi Ohfuchi and Daiki Suzuki and carries stuff that you won’t find elsewhere. He also has a different attitude in regard to style and it’s quite refreshing to chat with him about clothing and what you can get out of certain garments in regard to functionality and purpose. Add Extra to the list of stores you visit on your weekend stroll. It’ll be fun.
