The cuts are inexpensive and if you come at a non-​hectic time the staff will be very accomocating with helping you whether youre trying to find a new hair style or trying to take a bit off the top or just to clean up.
Language barrier can be a problem because they are mainly chinese speakers with some broken english. I’ve been going to Ken for my haircut for over 20 years.
Often times Ken will try to do what you want and sometimes he understands the way the hair grows so while it doesn’t look like how you want it to look at the moment somehow magically it will grow into the look a day or two later as I’ve been told by friends who I’ve recommended. Final bit of advice is speak up if you have suggestions or reminders or you’re afraid your cut is not going the way you want it mid cut speak up and say not too short, or a little more off the sides, and please and thank you. And at the least if you’re not going for a big chop, hair grows back.

This place is a cheap haircut. Nothing more, nothing less. If you’re mad at your haircut, don’t be cause it’s less than $ 20. I had a pretty lame haircut but I went in with the intention of just reducing the length of my hair. The stylist understood English but was pretty worn out by the time she got to me cause it was the day before Chinese New Year so she pretty much ignored everything I requested. Go when it’s not busy and request something simple.

I went here for a haircut based on the reviews. The price of the haircut was $ 18. I am disappointed with my haircut and unfortunately won’t be coming back. I was in a rush to leave so I didn’t take a good look at it before walking out the door. When I got home and looked in the mirror, I realized that my hair is all over the place. I had to take a scissor and fix it myself. There are loose strands all uneven. The hair washing was nice and I went on a weekday afternoon so no wait time.

Damn this place is cheap. It was only $ 16 dollars for a haircut & wash before tip. For this price the haircut was definitely worth it.
I came on a weekday around 2PM and there were only a couple of other people in the salon. The interior of this salon is pretty small and simple: think of any typical Asian hair salon. But, this isn’t some luxury salon so what can you really expect? The wait time was minimal: I easily had my hair washed and was sent to the stylist immediately after. The hair wash was great. The lady was extremely thorough and rinsed my hair 3 times. It was soothing and the head massage was great. Definitely worth it to wash your hair just for the comfort.
I chose Tommy based on previous Unilocal reviews. Overall, I’m satisfied with the haircut I received. You could tell that he knew what he was doing and he was open to listening to feedback. (He understood both Chinese and English). My hair turned out way shorter than I imagined, but it was still skillfully cut. He said that my hair was «dead anyways.» (Can’t deny that haha). Also, I found it interesting how styled my hair before cutting it. I was on my way as soon as he finished cutting my hair.
Overall had a pretty good experience and am satisfied with my haircut. For this price there’s nothing to complain about.

I was looking for a cheap place that can redo my spiral perm just in time for grad school and found this place via Unilocal comment. The comment I read is based on new, unpermed hair, and I’ve been perming AND dyeing my hair for years (surprised it hasn’t fallen out lol!), so I’m basically a seasoned permer by now and my review is based on that.
Basically, because of my hair status, I knew what potential damage I was getting myself into. My regular perm stylist in Hawaii (where I’m from) REALLY specializes in perms and knows how to work with permed hair in a way that does not damage it (before her, I went to a random Japanese salon over there that made my hair look and feel like cotton candy – it was a nightmare. 5 salons said I couldn’t do anything about it – she was the only one who saved me.) Because I was abroad for the summer, I couldn’t go back to Hawaii before moving to NYC– I just needed a salon that can do a decent touch up before I go to her again.
Now, onward to Focus! Their service was very straight to the point – no chitchat or small talk, very terse. The lady who washed my hair and assisted Tommy wasn’t the nicest, gentlest person ever – but I could deal with that! I told them I just want to redo my hair as it is – and also showed them a picture of what it should look like – they talked it over a bit and then continued with my hair.
They placed a lotion in my hair that has oils to protect it – apparently. But the lady quickly squeezed it on the back of my head and didn’t even run it through the front of my hair, which REALLY needs it. Tommy and the lady took extra care to put the rollers in my hair, and I wouldn’t say their method of perm is «traditional” – they didn’t roll it the same way other stylists (in Hawaii and in Asia) I’ve been to do, and didn’t really do it uniform – just kinda rolled it in a haphazard-​looking but patterned way around my head. They also used a smaller roller size on the top of my head which made me think back to my horrible not curly/​cotton candy hair experience. That made me nervous, but I had an open mind.
The results of the perm were not exactly how I wanted it, but fine. Not horrific, not wonderful – just decent, doable. The perm doesn’t look bad by itself, but it did create dryness and the ends aren’t nice ringlets, the perm is a bit more kinky than curly, and the ends are a tad scraggly. Easy fix with a self-​trim on those parts, and lots of deep conditioning. Otherwise, the perm isn’t ugly, my hair is super curly/​kinky (as wanted) and fun/​funky, and showoffable for grad school!
$ 100 for wash, trim, perm, and style is a steal. The prices are why people come. So for a decent (again not bad, but not amazing) very cheap perm, Focus gets the job done. They can’t substitute for my regular stylist in Hawaii who creates healthy looking ringlets, but hey – what are you going to expect from a salon that has the lowest prices in the city?!?
Just wanted to write this for any other curly on a budget :) if you are particular, you might get disappointed, but if you have an open mind, it’s fine.

The lady who washed my hair spent about 5 seconds massaging the shampoo/​conditioner into my scalp before each rinse. Shampoo on. Shampoo off. Repeat. In total, I would say that the hair washing took about 2 minutes only because she let the water run. Not only did BARELY TOUCH my hair during the hair washing that I paid for, she totally skipped out on the massage afterwards. When I sat up from the «hair wash» she said «ok, done» and sent me on my way.
Maybe I would’ve understood if there were a line of people waiting, but no. There was no one after me. She just sat around after that.
The only reason I let it slide and still gave her a good tip was because I thought this was just how they did it here. However, later, when I asked my mom about her previous experience here, she said the hair washing lady did not treat her with the same disrespect.
The only reason why I still give this place 3 stars is because it was cheap and because of Tommy. He offered good suggestions and I am satisfied with the haircut I received from him.
It is NOT OK to treat customers differently because of their age or otherwise.

1^st time here and I was referred to see Tommy. I have long straight hair and I wanted to get a spiral perm. I showed Tommy what I wanted before we started the process and he was good. He knew and did what I wanted. First, he asked an assistant to wash my hair.
Then, he gave me a trim because I had lots of split ends and then because my hair was so dry from the home dye, he recommended me a certain «lotion» to keep the chemicals from drying out my hair further. That lotion was an additional $ 20 and I took the deal. He asked his assistant to put the rollers in my hair. She was careful and Tommy was checking on her from time to time while he took care of 3 other customers. It didn’t bother me as long as he paid attention to my hair process which he did.
The hair wash, cut, perm and style was $ 80, which is a real steal. Total cost is $ 100 and I got a head massage when they washed my hair. Oh, I’ll definitely come back for perm touch ups.
The place is small and I came on Sunday @ 9:30 in the morning and they already have customers. The place is very busy and I notice during my 3 hour visit, the salon served many customers and most folks didn’t make any appointment. I didn’t make an appointment either which I’ll learn to do for next time and try to avoid weekends.

Tommy is cool too. This place produces consistent results no matter who cuts. I’ve officially been going here for 2 years now, since I moved to Brooklyn. Don’t be fooled by the smallness of how it looks outside. Yeah. Top notch stuff for the price.

I’ve been going to this place since I was 4 years old. There are two male hair stylists and an older woman who washes hair that still work there. This is what keeps me coming back, even when I was in college in New England.
Now, that I have finally moved back to NYC for good, I trust no one with my hair except these guys. The woman who used to cut my hair retired, but I’ve found that any of the hair stylists do their job well. If Ivy is there (usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), I’ll have her cut my hair. Otherwise, the young guy with glasses or the shorter, bald guy are good choices, too. (Who am I kidding. They all do their job so well!)
Before the haircut, I always get my hair washed by the old woman, because she gives the best scalp and neck massage. These 10 – 15 minutes are blissful. She is also so nice and adjusts the water and pressure of her massage according to your tastes.
The salon is really narrow and can’t fit many people. Also, try to avoid coming during the weekends and late afternoons, because those are their busy hours.
The haircut, for long hair, is $ 16. That includes the hair washing. How cool is that? I usually tip the hair stylist about $ 5 and the hair washing lady $ 3. So I pay about $ 24 for an hour of a blissful, mood-​changing experience.

My old haircut place move to flushing so just trying out this place after searching Unilocal.But it turns out TOTALLY WORTH! First their price is definitely reasonable and I don’t see a more expensive place could be much better than this.
Stylist Ivy do my hair this time, she is very patient and has great ideas if you just open your mind and discuss your expectation with her. She would be happily help you make your hair nice! It’s a small shop for sure but everyone is nice and friendly!

I kinda live life on the edge a bit, I never go into a hair salon prepared with a picture of what I want or anything like that so I can probably be blamed for a shitload of bad haircuts throughout my life. I always figured I can always put a hat on and wait for it to grow out if it was messed up.
But I mean, how difficult can a simple trim without using the buzzers on the sides be? Well really hard apparently since up till now I only had two places that can follow instructions and I am glad I finally found one in NYC and for damn cheap too.
I walked into Focus, due to the reviews mentioning a hair cut without a shampoo is only like 8 bucks. $ 8!!! Since I just came out the shower, I opted for the cut only. A little annoyed that I had to wait like 20 – 30 min for Ivy to finally work on my hair and almost left but I was a walk in so I guess I can’t complain too much… (not sure if they take appointments or not)
She followed directions on what I wanted and had me done in about 15 minutes. Was happy with what I got, tipped $ 7 and was on my way.

The first time I went to this hair salon, I was pretty disappointed that my hair turned out «fobby». I hate that type of hair style, especially since i’m an American-​Born asian. My stylist was Ivy. She was pleasant and attempted to give me what I desired, but unfortunately wasn’t successful and her hair cutting methods were quite blunt and sudden, almost scary.
Despite the first experience, I decided to give it a second try because the price of the hair cut is UNBELIEVABLE! Haircuts range between $ 8-​$ 10. You can have the option to have your hair washed, but the wash comes along with a real nice 20 minute head massage for just $ 6-​$ 8 bucks!
The second time I brought pictures for reference on exactly what I wanted and told her I DO NOT want my endges thinned out, because that’s what makes my haircut look fobby. She was much more finnesse with her hair cutting this time around, and it was a MUCH better experience. My total came to $ 20 with wash, cut, blow dry AND tip!
I’d recommend this place if you’re on a tight budget, and not too picky about your hair. I just recommend bringing photos for reference and having an open mind.

I’ve been coming to this salon for over a decade back when they were located on Chrystie Street. I’m not sure if you can make an appointment as I always just walk in.
The guy I go to is very friendly and will chat with his customers. After a while, he’ll remember your preferences and you can just ask him for the usual. Unfortunately, he takes Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays off, so it’s a bit of a hassle. Quality service and a pricetag of under $ 10 for a haircut makes it worthwhile though.
