True Value

I’m not much of a Mr Fix-​It, but every now and then I have to do some kind of repair around the house. Which makes me appreciate having a reasonably well-​stocked hardware store within half a mile of my apartment. That would be three stars, but they pick up the fourth by living up to the True Value name — the prices here are pretty good, and in some cases downright cheap. I can generally get what I need to accomplish minor home repairs for a few bucks.
The experience of shopping here is worth noting. It’s a Chinatown hardware store. The staff is willing to be helpful, but for English speakers that helpfulness may involve one person translating your request to the person who will actually be helping you. Off you go with the helper, reduced to pantomime for any further communication. You’ll be led to some nook in this cluttered second floor establishment where chances are you’ll find what you’re looking for. Odd system, but it works.
I enjoy a little character, and this place has it. I like a bargain, too. So when I have to be Mr Fix-​It this is my first stop.
