To people complaining about the service — the food is very good here and the prices are reasonable. But there aren’t a whole lot of customers exactly, and I’ve noticed quite a bit of turnover with the staff. So you might get an inexperienced waitstaff who isn’t being paid well. I’ve had people who were there on their first night. My advice is just to basically be patient. I am really sorry this place closed because it was really good.

It always seems to amaze me when people leave shitty reviews at a sushi place after ordering a box or sushi rolls. Rule number one: if it’s not Japanese owned, get the fuck outta there. Easy. Rule number two: don’t order a California roll or a spicy tuna roll and complain that the«fish» isn’t fresh. Most Unilocalers have no idea what fresh is. Rule number three: don’t leave a one star rating because the delivery person forgot an item. This place is good, not great, but offers great value. While their fish may not be the best in class, it’s still superior to the Chinese owned sushi joints. They also have a great selection of Japanese bar food and friendly servers. The $ 1.00 sushi will thank you.

Got delivery of sushi lunch special and the pieces albeit okay tasting weren’t the ones advertised. I didn’t get any pieces of yellowtail or eel. Instead I got whitefish and shrimp. The rice wasn’t the sushi rice usually used either. Think it was longer grain so it wasn’t as enjoyable. The fried oysters however were succulent and delicious! Not sure if I’d go back based on the false advertising antics. It was(pardon the joke), the old bait and switch trick!

Nice sushi for a decent price. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our waiter was able to speak English and served us very well within a short period of time. We tried the octopus which was very tasty and fresh.

I would say the sushi is average, but in that price it is already more than I expected — relatively fresh fish with thick slices of fish meat. They have some menu(sea urchin) at low price which is quite surprising. The rice is a bit too hard on the texture, should have been better. I can speak japanese so I did not find a problem on the service perspective. Just don’t expect anything fancy with the sushi as they keep it simple.

1. The waiters and waitresses don’t speak English. 2. One dollar sushi pieces are thin cuts of fish on mounds of rice. 3. Don’t get beer by tap they give u a cup of head. 4. One good thing you can practice your Japanese. 5. After eating there me and sjc went to Lenny’s because we were still hungry.

Really friendly staff but really average sushi. Everything from the salad and ginger dressing to the spicy tuna was ok. The sushi chef was friendly as was the staff and there’s a lot to be said for having a decent team.

It seems as though majority of the complaints are regarding slow service/discourteous wait staff… But seldom is there an issue with the food… In my humble opinion, the staff is not rude at all. They are just not over the top in your face every five seconds asking ‘how’s it going over here?’ ‘how are you doing now?’ ‘it’s been 2.5 minutes since I last checked in on you, and need to see what’s up again…‘ The staff and chef are serious and unassuming, which is much more apt for the Japanese restaurant environment than say TGI Friday’s where brashness and extended BS conversations are standard protocol for waiters. It is 100% Japanese owned and run. The fish is consistently fresh and I’ve never been disappointed with the quality. I’ve eaten in the restaurant twice and have not had one problem. I’ve repeatedly gotten takeout and had positive experience. Their lunch specials are excellent and $ 1 sushi is a cost effective treat for those on an epicurean budget.

I went just after lunchtime on a weekday. Despite living on the same block, I would not return here. It didn’t make me sick but the sushi tasted old. The service was fine and the food was prepared quickly but I would not recommend.

ok I think people are being a tad too harsh. I have been eaten there 3 times all during weekdays and never encountered the long wait. Their staff is courteous and friendly. and c’mon their $ 1 sushi pieces are quite good for the price. Best sushi pound for pound in my opinion.

Weekday Lunch time review. I’ve been here 3 times already and each time service was the same. You can sit down immediately but expect to wait 20 – 30 minutes for your tea/water. Food takes about 40 minutes to be served. The miso soup and salad the lunch specials come with are mediocre but the main dishes themselves are filing and delicious. The chef is creative and the presentation of the main dishes are visually delightful. If the orders are too backed up, the chef will occasionally refuse any more customers. tldr: slow service, good and fresh main dishes.

Have been here twice now for lunch and both times service was pretty slow and horrendous. A table next to us just walked out b/c they had been sitting there for 20 mins and hadn’t been acknowledged. But the food is decent, even though that doesn’t make up for it. Had the short rib rice bowl(sorry can’t think of the real name) and it was tasty. Just wish it came with more things with it. Another time had the teriyaki bento box and that was pretty average.

Ok so the restaurant is clean, the staff seemed okay I went on a Tuesday night at 8. Exactly 8:15 I walked in there was 6 people dinning in and I ordered around 8:25 the shrimp tempura roll which honestly was ok not the best I had but okay come out around 8:50 then I waited patiently until 9:43 and my second order still didn’t come out. I just got fed up and left

My review is purely based on seamless delivery and take-out orders. There is pretty much nothing more comforting on a rough or rainy workday than a bowl of tanuki udon from here. They do the right thing and package the broth separately from the noodles(which also come with kani, tempura pieces, and spinach). The broth is really flavorful and not just the pure salt that many other places in the neighborhood seem to use for soups. Plus the dish is only $ 6.50, and comes with salad and a piece of inari! The $ 1 sushi pieces are also quite good for the price(some are $ 1.50, which is still a great deal). My only real complaint is that the udon isn’t available for dinner. But that’s probably a good thing as far as my hips and waistline are concerned.

Positive stuff first: The wait staff was pleasant and food came fairly quickly, though we went relatively late on a Sunday. However, this was the worst sushi I’ve ever eaten. The salmon roll was inedible; I couldn’t bring myself to eat a second piece after the first. The fish was chewy and tough with a strange flavor. In all three rolls I ordered, the seaweed, too, was quite chewy… indicating that either A) the rice hadn’t been properly dried or B) the sushi was old. The spicy tuna didn’t taste like any other spicy tuna I’ve had– and not in a good way. I brought a first date here on a lark because the other sushi places we visited were closed, and both of us kept diving back into the refuge of our miso soups… the one thing which is pretty difficult to get completely wrong. The bill was a slap in the face after all of that. Dear Unilocaler and sushi-lover, you can do much better.

I am shocked to see such high reviews for this place — 3.5 stars is quite generous. Maybe I went on a bad night but the service was s l o w. I’ll take less than mediocre food and not really complain but bad service, especially on a not-so-busy night, makes me crazy! As the waitress seated us I asked her for hot sake — after 15 minutes I remind her and she brings it over 10 minutes later. We place our order and I ask for water — after about 10 minutes, I ask her for water again and 10 minutes later(still waiting for food) I ask her for water and then she finally brings it. 45 minutes later our food finally arrives and we ask for the bill so we don’t have to wait another 20 minutes for the waitress to bring us something. Food — Nothing special, overpriced, and not worth the wait. As we’re waiting for her to bring us the receipt, a woman rushes in apologizing for being 35 minutes late for her pick-up order. They say«oh it’s not ready yet». She said«but you told me 15 minutes — and I’m 35 minutes late!» Never again.

12⁄2013 Had to update my review and take away a star based on their seamless delivery and take out orders. Yamakage Tokyo — I want to love you and order from you everyday but you really need to get your stuff together. After spreading good words about you through out the office. I have only gotten negative feedbacks because — YOUCANNEVERGETTHEORDERRIGHT! I have experienced it first hand through out the past 6 months, every single order has a mistake of some sort. Either got the orders wrong completely, most of the times is missing items or substituting other items from what was originally ordered. And the most irritating thing is being stingy on the wasabi and soy sauce. Really? 2 packs of for 4 entrée orders ??? Also please update your menu both on Seamless and printed one. The two doesn’t match up and it’s frustrating. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — 6⁄2013 Yamakage Tokyo has definitely made it my mid-town go-to place. Authentic and super fresh Japanese sushi. Very friendly and attentive staff. Their $ 1 sushi menu is simply unheard of. Everything on there was superb and even included pricier selections such as — uni, scallop snow crab etc…

This is for delivery only. Great lunch deal! For $ 10.75 I got good sushi, miso soup, salad, edamame, and a small seaweed salad. Their sushi is far superior to any refrigerated sushi and most restaurant sushi. They also have a Japanese staff working there which is always a + for me. Only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that their edamame was a little overcooked. Almost there!

Came here for dinner with a friend, and they had very fresh and tasty sushi. Had miso soup with some rolls., crunchy spicy tuna. Tuna Avocado, salmon avacado and all with brown rice. Very tasty. And the best part about it it didn’t smell fishy In there.

I went back to Yamakage Tokyo recently for lunch. The Shrimp Tempura with Inari Sushi was great, for $ 8.95. It comes with a very generous bowl of soba. I took advantage of the spectacular $ 1. sushi promotion. Sashimi is $ 2. There is no limit on your order of sushi or sashimi. You save $ 3 – 4. per piece. I also had miso soup, salad, and Spicy Tuna Roll. The lady at a neighboring table said that the Avocado Salad and Bento Box were excellent.(The Bento Box Lunch Special is $ 8.50.) Prices, especially for this silk stocking neighborhood, are great. Eveything is high quality. Service is friendly, and helpful. The waitresses are charming and attentive. The atmosphere is quaint, a combination of rustic and elegant. Yamakage Tokyo is a real find. I highly recommend this happy place.
