Our first visit to this sushi bar. So much wrong here. No decent greeting when entering restaurant, you just kind of stand there, odd. First the food and bar areas are dirty. Glasses placed face down on drying pads and they have a bar fly(fruit fly) problem, very common with bars that do not maintain the bar correctly. Waitress brought out a dirty mop to clean up a spill behind us. Ordered hot sake, «sour and spoiled» from a gallon box dispenser on a warmer. I have never seen saki served like this. When I notified the manager he tasted and changed the box. No apology. We were not served by a single server. 4 – 5 people involved in serving us and we had to asked for several things by getting someone’s attention. The restaurant is also very loud with annoying music as hibachi is a wild hollering fest across from the sushi bar with no separation. Sushi was actually ok tasting, thus the 2 star rating. One in our party ordered chicken meal from kitchen. Obviously warmed up deli type meal, soggy dark noodles, meat, rice. Soup, ugh-worst Japanese soup I have ever tasted. We will never return to this restaurant and advise others to pass, yukkk!

My wife wanted to go for lunch and when we got there the resturant was about ¼ full. We ordered drinks and food. My food arrived shortly after the salad and Miso soup arrived, however my wife’s food came about 15 mins later and was the wrong item. The waitress came back about 10 mins later with the correct item and our drinks still had not arrived. After mentioning it she went and got the drinks. We were billed for the entire and an upcharge to the fried rice. The staff nor manager made any adjustments as compensation for the wrong order and drinks taking over 20 minutes on a slow day.

Going in with middling expectations, I was surprised. We went for the Hibachi dinner and were told to wait a few minutes. We looked at the menu while we waited, noticing the prices were a bit high. After a few minutes we were seated. Once again, we had to wait for our table top fill up and for a Hibachi chef to arrive. Once he fired up the grill — literally — we were treated to some excellent fried rice, veggies, chicken, and shrimp. There was plenty of it, too. It may not have been the best Hibachi dinner I’ve had, but it was certainly the most plentiful. In summary, if you are here for the Hibachi, expect to wait but expect to feast.

Shogun has good sushi. But the service is inconsistent. They have a beautiful atmosphere, especially for being in a strip mall.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better happy hour anywhere. Shogun’s sushi is pretty reasonably priced to begin with… but when you go during happy hour they have rolls for as little as $ 2.50… my wife and I were able to order drinks and eat until we couldn’t eat any more and the bill was less than 25. We always look forward to going to Shogun when we’re in town.

Ummmm, sushi happy hour?! Yes please! I think I was full off only $ 10 worth of sushi. Drinks are reasonably priced! Thoughtful presentation and very friendly wait staff. But yeah, even if all those other things were horrible, you’d still have a sushi happy hour! So, if you like sushi, I say give it a go! Good food, cheap prices and great staff!

Do not make reservations because there’s no point! Made a reservation at 7:15 on Valentine’s Day(yes it’s expected to be busy hence the reservations) BUT we didn’t get seated until an HOUR later. We tried to get drinks while we waited and that took almost a half hour. Almost 2 hours after our reservation and still no food, chef or drinks. There has yet to be ANY courtesy of an apology or any of the sort for the long wait.

This place is SEXIST, will not hire males to become servers. Creepy old man runs the place and like young women. Service is horrible and let’s worker get away with slacking.

Had a great meal and the cook really put on a show. The prices were a bit steep for the Hibachi though.

The service here sucks. If you feel like waiting forever and having to flag down the waitstaff every time you want something, go for it. If you go in with the lowest expectations, you won’t be disappointed. The food is decent though. It’s not bad sushi for Mankato, which is kind of like saying it’s the best of the worst, but that’s the only reason I go back.

The décor is fresh and modern, which matched their food. The prices are reasonable and because of their great deals I have made it my new Friday night drinking spot. The best classy place for sushi and drinks on a weekend! The only reason I can’t give a perfect review is the waitresses so far have been hit or miss, otherwise it’s an amazing place to eat!

I now go to this place at least once a week. We recently discovered how much awesome food you can get during Happy Hour, and it’s cheap. My new favorite roll is the Fantastic Roll. I love the fried rice with Yum Yum sauce drizzled on top. The gyoza is great, and I tried the Naruto appetizer which is crab meat and avocado wrapped in paper thin cucumber with a nice vinaigrette on the plate. It was light and refreshing. Shogun is one of the best restaurants in Mankato. I love it! 5 stars all the way

We have been go Shogun several times, and the quality of the sashimi and rolls never lets us down. It is really high quality sushi in the heart of Mankato. The service is quick and friendly and always willing to provide advice on the menu. We really appreciate the creativity of the sushi chef. We eat sushi all over the United States, and I can honestly say that the Shogun sushi chef creativity, especially when it comes to rolls, sashimi, and appetizers is terrific. The space is open and it has a great vibe. We are really lucky to have such a high quality sushi restaurant in Mankato.

Great new décor and design with large hibachi area, food was tasty, sushi was generous and fresh. Service was great for us and we were having a good time. The best japanese restaurant in Mankato so far.

I have been to this restaurant 3 times and am getting more disappointed every time. Soup tastes like water, shrimp is not fresh, service is horrible, price is overcharged. I don’t think I will give it another try.

With dread I write this update to my previously glowing 5 star recommendation. :( My husband and I have returned to Shogun about 4 times in the last 3 months and chose not to do hibachi but rather the seated restaurant. Our experiences have been less than stellar I am sad to report. Service: Table service leaves alot to be desired. Slow to fill drink orders, even slower refills. I also suspect due to lack of English skills sometimes the wrong drink/beer arrives. One time our soup and salad were forgotten so they were served after the entrée — this is poor service and should have automatically resulted in a reduced price or free wine refill or SOMETHING but no, nothing, not even a sorry. Food: Now this I really hesitate to report but I am committed to telling the truth at all times — I am a scallop LOVER so I have ordered twice the teriyaki scallops. BOTH times they have skimped on the scallops and CUTTHEMINHALF across — so they are trying to deceive you into thinking you have 6 scallops but really what you have are three of them. I have NEVER seen this occur in another restaurant and quite frankly this is cheap, dishonest and betrays a serious problem. I am not ok with paying $ 17.95 for 3 scallops, a half a cup of veggies and a small scoop of rice. Anyone who loves scallops will know they are half thickness, then when you sear them halved like this they come out chewy. Our experiences at the Hibachi tables was always so positive. I don’t know if this is a change to the restaurant or just a contrast but really should it make a difference where you sit? Atmosphere: still great — I see its getting busier and there are now waits on Fri and Sat nights but I never complain about waits. I don’t mind waiting for good food and service but I do mind waiting for a table then getting crappy service and half a food order. BIGGESTPROBLEM: THEBILL — we ordered short pour beers, three tap Sapporo’s to be exact and we were charged for four talls. WTF? Seriously this was a huge tick off factor and the last straw. We pointed out the error and they did fix it but that should never happen. I wonder, given the dishonest practices with food service if this was even an accident. I hope so. If anyone from Shogun ever reads this — here some advice: When YOU make a mistake like this it will irritate your customer, it is customary in the US to refund your mistake at least in part to demonstrate your good will and desire to maintain satisfaction with your business. Fixing your mistake will result in an even higher opinion of you then if you’d not made the mistake in the first place. I can no longer recommend this restaurant, which makes me sad. We will not be back.

The food & the atmosphere were great, but I’m giving 2 stars because the service was the worst experience I’ve ever had. I’ve worked at a restaurant for 3 years so I get how hard it is, but it was just ridiculous. First, the food took 40 minutes… and by the time it came she only remembered to ring in my hibachi order and not my sushi… so I had to go up to the sushi counter and asked them where it was myself(because I hadnt seen our server since she took our order) that was the other thing… after our server took our order we never saw her again… Not to check in, refill waters, anything. Yet she had the time to check on the table next to us. I finally saw her again when it was bill time and she couldn’t even get that right. Needless to say I won’t be back.
