Steer clear. I went to a cactus in Sayville a few years ago and it was the best cut I’ve ever had. I was wrong in thinking that because it was the same chain they would employ competent people who knew what they were doing. I purchased a groupon, which should have no bearing on my cut, and made an appointment with Jennifer. She was wide open all day every day which was a red flag I did not heed. I went in and explained that I wanted a shoulder length bob style cut that wasn’t longer in the front or stacked(I wanted it the same length front and back), angling to start at my chin and layers. I explained, and stressed, that I needed to be able to pull my hair back for work. I knew from previous haircuts that this was possible. What I ended up with was far from what I asked for. My hair is now longer in the back making it look like a ridiculous pageboy cut, only the right side of my head is layered and the layers start above my ear making it impossible to pull it back let alone even put it behind my ear and my angling is some awkward mess that starts mid cheek. I knew as soon as she made her first layer cut she messed up but there was no fixing that ridiculously short layer she had just created. But I guess she realized that or the look on my face said all that I didn’t and that’s why only half my head is layered. I’ve always had short hair until recently so if it were just too short I could work with it but this is just a mess. Even though I had a $ 20 discount with the groupon I can’t believe I paid to look like this. I would go for a recut but I’m afraid of what I would end up looking like. I guess they send their groupons to the newbie that has already cut all the hair off of her sad mannequin. tl;dr — I asked for a shoulder length bob style cut that was not stacked, had layers, was angled at my chin and would be long enough to pull up. What I got was a ridiculous pageboy cut with a messy angle starting mid cheek and layers so short I could be a Motley Crüe stand in.

Update: I went here for a deep conditions and haircut/emergency rescue after I had some bad extension put in. While they aren’t experts in African American hair, the products they used gave me the moisture my hair desperately needed, and they were able to fix my style enough so that I’d look presentable until I went to see my regular stylist.

I have been going to cactus for over a year now. I have long curly hair & it is rare to find a stylist that knows how to really do a blow out. I was paying double the price for the same end result in half the time! And not only is their one stylist but three girls! I really lucked out. The receptionist Danielle is such an asset to the salon she is pleasant all time, goes over & beyond. So give it a try… You won’t be sorry.

Just had my hair done by Courtney again last week… she really does great work. So happy! Courtney has been doing my hair for about five years. I moved from New York to Boston a year and a half ago and I continue to travel to Long Island every six weeks for my hair appointment. The travel is worth the good results… it really is. It means a lot to have a stylist that wants to make you look and feel good.

Horrilbe service. I made an appointment two days ago for a one process hair color, glaze and haircut. My appointment was 11:30am but I was late and arrived 11:32 pm(according to the clock on wall at salon) A women at counter was trying to help me – she could not find my name and another girl named Jackie came up to register and told her she would handle this(very rudely) Later the women who was trying to help me came up to me and apologized THAT she could not find my name. I think it had to do with Jackie’s RUDENESS. Jackie after finding my name told me to follow her to chair and proceeded with me complaining she has to do this quick because they overbooked her by 3 people. When I told her I wanted a full one color hair process then just my roots she started complaining again. She was very unprofessional and from the moment I walked in she had a chip on her shoulder. When does this become the clients problem. I told her I wanted a light brown she came back and quickly colored hair(not the color I requested) and left me sitting in a chair for 45 minutes without even checking on me. After forty five minutes I was finally being acknowledged by the girl who washes your hair. She came up to me to wash color and asked if I wanted a glaze and I said yes — she went to Jackie and Jackie told her that no it will take up to much time. When I called I requested the service. I decided that I would rather have the glaze then the haircut. The girl went to tell Jackie and came back to do the washing and Glaze. Still no acknowledgment from Jackie. .After getting the glaze done another women came up and said they could still cut my hair but by that time i just wanted to leave. I Went up the street to another salon for haircut. Not once did Jackie come up to me or acknowledge me. Jackie –I APOLOGIZEASTHECLIENTWHOCOMESTOCACTUSFORPARTICULARHAIRSERVICESANDTHENTHERECEPTIONISTOVERBOOKS – YOU– THEHAIRCOLORIST/STYLIST. Again when does this become the clients problem. I live in Manorville New York — up the street from Cactus and the behavior I received from Jackie today was unacceptable. Remember Jackie it is not the CLIENTS fault that you were overbooked.. The final straw was when I went to pay and they kept calling me Dorothy((now i know why the first girl could not find my name when i first walked in) and TOLD me that I was all set because I had a Groupon Coupon., I had no ideal what they were talking about. I Asked them what Groupon Coupon was and no one would answer. I went home and looked it up on the computer. This behavior in this salon was very unacceptable. I think even the girl behind the front counter realized this was a disaster. Again I tried to pay and she told me don’t worry we will take care of it and apologized. I don’t think I was asking for much === Just a nice environment for services I was getting. Cactus Salon after my experience with your Salon’s level of service — you are not the one for me.

I went to this location just once when I received a gift certificate. I received a mani/pedi and then a cut and blowout. The hair side of things was fine, but the nail side of things was just not clean. There was dust all over the mani desk, the nail polish bottles, everything. On top of it, the mani and pedi didn’t last more than two days — you can do better at your local nail salon.

Cactus Salon in Manorville RUINED my hair. My naturally dirty blonde hair with blonde highlights just needed to be touched up with more blonde highlights… it came out BRASSY and ORANGE. I felt like getting up out of the chair and running out of the salon. The staff was EXTREMELYRUDE. They were a bunch of drama loving washer women and I don’t think they could’ve treated they clients with any more DISRESPECT than they already were. Also, all of the clients were OVERBOOKED. I was being rushed out of the chair by a women with bleach blonde hair and OBVIOUS clip on extensions that looked like they were cut off of a barbie doll’s head. AND although they were overbooked, they hairdressers were finding it more important to do each other’s hair while there were aggravated clients sitting and waiting 30 – 45 mins AFTER their set appointments!!! I couldn’t believe that they treated me so disrespectfully after I had spent over 200 dollars in their salon! Trust me, going to Lemon Tree or Super Cuts would be better than going to Cactus Salon & Spa in Manorville, NY! Or even cutting your own hair might’ve been a better decision.

After my less than pleasant experience at the Cactus Salon in Stony Brook, these girls were super helpful. You’re offered a beverage while you wait and are greeted by each stylist. Jackie was my stylist and she was so sweet and did exactly what i wanted color-wise. She gave me a glaze and a blowout and was very friendly, as were all the girls during my visit. I have never been satisfied with a salon until now and they have definitely made themselves a new regular customer.
