I used to go to 288 Lake for open water swim training, but ever since I discovered Twin Lakes I don’t want to go anywhere else. 288 Lake can get kind of crowded, but at Twin Lakes I’m usually one of the only people out there. I just love the peace and solitude of a long swim with nearly no one around. You also don’t find yourself being strangled by the vegetation like at 288 Lake in the middle of the summer. The lake is marked with buoys and it’s $ 5 cash to get in. I think it’s closed on Mondays, but the owners are so nice and have always told me that if I want to swim when the lake is closed, I can just leave cash in the drop bin.

Realizing that I can’t swim after my first triathlon in Galveston, I decided to go here to get more open water swimming experience. I remember going here to meet up with other Houston triathletes for a splash and dash race. The place is quite far from Houston but not as far as Galveston. You drive off Morris Ave onto crushed gravel and pass by the entrance of a trailer home park. Since I was just swimming, my admission fee was $ 5. If I were to scuba dive, it would have costed me $ 15. They have are several shelters from the sun. If you bring your own food for a picnic, they have bbq pits and tables. The lake itself has training platforms and buoys in the middle of it to help you orient yourself in the water.
