OK this place reminds you old the day when places gave you service. Good selection of product.

Pew! Is it legal to smoke a pipe in a store just cuz you own it? Stinky store, rude service. No wonder Lowes and HD are growing.

I wish there was more places like this. Friendly friendly friendly and they know their stuff. :-)

After getting a bunch of blank stares from the employees wandering aimlessly around Lowes and Home Depot, I stumbled upon Scheidt Hardware while driving down Manchester one day. I needed help finding a solution for an issue with my front porch. I gave the gentleman a very choppy and amateur description of my problem. He nodded, and walked back to an aisle near the back of the store, pulled a package off the shelf, handed it to me, and said, «This is what you need.» I’ll be damned if he wasn’t right. I wasn’t even 100% sure what the problem was, and he knew the solution. I’m sold. Also, it smells like pipe smoke in there. It’s a small reminder of a simpler time, when a crumpled up pair of trousers cost a brand new dime.

did you know they sell eggs here? yep, in a little mini-fridge at the end of the counter. don’t go buying them all out from under me, but they’re nice farm fresh eggs. and they’ll take your old cartons if you’ll bring them.

I’m on a quest to never use Home Depot ever again, so I seek out more Mom and Pop shops… Sometimes that takes me to a Tru-Value Hardware store. I know it’s a chain, but I think they’re owned independently so that appeases my chain-guilt for the few minutes I’m inside the store. By comparison to larger hardware stores, this one might lack on the inventory, but definitely makes up in terms of service. The staff here are professionals and can make wonderful suggestions on what you need to do to get the job done. I can’t say that about larger, more corporate, stores.

They describe themselves as a real olé’ time hardware store and it’s true. It smells like the hardware stores I remember from my childhood. We had a neighborhood store and would always go there for extra keys or mailbox labels. It was always fun for me. It was just a hodgepodge of stuff. Metal stuff that clanged, glass stuff that you could tap on, paint, hoses, stuff for your lawn. It’s so depressing to see all those local hardware stores fold due to the big name chains. There’s just something so sweet and special you’ll never be able to get from a massive store like Lowe’s. Like knowing you’re supporting your neighborhood. Having the shop owners know your name. Getting anything you want customized, like glass for your bedroom window. The store is clean and stocked full of everything you could want. It’s right in the heart of Maplewood. My friend and I went in and just looked at everything. She comes here all the time and says it’s packed on weekends, which made me happy to hear. They also sell beef jerky near the cash register. Lowe’s would never do that.
