I was a little skeptical when I first walked in(there are no other lunch options until you hit Marblemount or Mazama, depending on the direction you are heading!). However, the sandwiches they are turning out are pretty fantastic. Named after several of the area’s local attractions, they come with multi-grain bread and good looking meats, cheeses and fresh veggies piled high(and comes with Tim’s chips). Looks like they do breakfast options in the mornings, as well. They also have an ice cream«shop» within the store — there was quite a line up waiting for a scoop! The veggie wrap I had was solid(spinach tortilla, sour cream, cheese, bean spread, cabbage, tomato), albeit a little bland for my taste — definitely needed some Tapatio to spice things up. It was still very fresh and a huge step up from the previously-frozen food type fare I was expecting. They have a few«to go» items(already made sandwiches, chips & salsa, salads), but if you order at the counter, your sandwich is put together in front of you with care, no sloppy sandwich artists here!

After camping in a nearby campground in North Cascades National Park this general store pleasantly surprised me with a full on espresso coffee shop & café neatly tucked away amongst the Cheetos and contact solution. Leave it to Washington to have a coffee shop around every corner, even in the most remote places of the state. I was searching and searching for some coffee in and around the National Park Visitor Center and couldn’t find a hint of any in sight. The latte I ordered was good but what’s really getting the four stars is location, location, location. It’s really convenient to have this store situated near the Newhalem Campground.

The general store is near the visitors center. Inside, you’ll find your normal 7 – 11 type conveniences. if you stop there, you’ll miss out on a couple of treats. First off, their homemade country-style white gravy with sausage chunks is AMAZING. you must buy their biscuits and gravy. The gravy crazed our gravy addict so much she poured half a pot onto her small paper plate, while holding the plate over her head to directly guzzle any spillage. The second treat is their homemade fudge. They’ll have a flavor for you, for sure. The caramel is good, as is the tiger’s something or other, which is layered peanut butter and white flavor. When we were driving back to california and stopped at a random beach cove, birds snatched up our unprotected fudge. Guess fudge is bird food, too!
