Life Rolls On…“Instilling in people that life with Spinal Cord Injuries, indeed, rolls on.” Annually over 6,700 youth incur a spinal cord injury. Tens of thousands more currently live with such an injury. That’s a lot of people. You probably even know someone in a wheelchair. I had the great pleasure of meeting Jesse Billauer( ) at this year’s US Open of Surf in Huntington Beach and what an inspiration this kid is! It would be easy to be down and dumpy after a major spinal cord injury such as his but he’s stoked… spun-up for a surf go-out no matter the conditions. If he could, I know he’d have challenged any of the contestants in this major contest to a one-on-one. And if attitude counted for anything, he’d win! The tent on the beach sold items in support of this organization where volunteers help those with loss of motor functions, mostly resulting from spinal cord injuries or disease, to get out there and surf, swim, and roll on. Life Rolls On, a division of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injury and utilizes action sports as a platform to inspire infinite possibilities despite paralysis. They Will Surf Again is LRO’s flagship program which utilizes an adaptive surfing experience to push the boundary of possibility for those with SCI’s. I certainly plan to get on board for the next surf session! For those who want to contribute to the cause directly, LRO has launched a Text2Give campaign where supporters can text the word«SURF» to 20222 and a $ 10 donation will be made to Life Rolls On Foundation(messaging and data rates may apply). Another amputee group is called«AmpSurf» where surfing makes them feel«like they’re flying»…http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/05/13/cnnheroes.cummings.amputee.surfing/index.html?hpt=C2 And indeed it does.

What an awesome organization! No one’s reviewed them yet? That’s impossible! Anyway, the organization is one that sets up days to gather volunteers and people with varying spinal cord injuries for a fun filled day of surfing. While some people may have some more mobility and can maneuver themselves, others may have been left with higher levels of injuries… meaning the volunteers are all there to make sure they don’t get hurt. Pretty exhausting, but seeing the smiles on all the participants’ faces is priceless. The local LA spots are done for this year, but I“ll definitely be back for more next year!
