I admit that I forgot another alter ego of mine. Mr Never Get Lost. These days, a cab driver’s best friend is his GPS. But, like everything GPS units can break down, get lost or worse, stolen. I had one that I was very fond of stolen right off my windshield one night. In that case, you have 2 options, get a map or a new GPS. GPS units have come down in price, but they still cost around 100 dollars if you want one that has good features. But they are a little hard to come by at 2 in the morning especially in a backwater shithole like Toledo. The next best thing is one of Metro’s Graphic Street Guides. I first learned of these while having to navigate the twisted mess that is Ann Arbor. Back in 1984 when I began driving there were no GPS units. Metro’s guides average around 8 dollars, but they are worth it. They show everything a map should have, and the numbered routes are outlined in black. If your GPS ever dies, these are the best alternative and guys, you wont have to suffer listening to your woman telling you to please ask for directions. You will already know where to go, and the nice thing is you can get them at 2 in the morning.
