Perfect example of a «hole in the wall» restaurant. ABSOLUTELYAMAZINGFOOD! BBQ sauce is perfectly sweet and spicy. These people know how to cook! The server and chef gave me wonderful service with a smile! I will be back soon!

Go here if you have a chance. Its a hole-in-the-wall, and the food is fantastic! I had brisket, ribs, links, beans, and greens! The dude behind the cooking was a great person too — happy and upbeat! With all of the great food he makes, he has to be happy. He walked up to me several times and checked on me, while serving others and even walking meals out to people in their cars. I was highly impressed with the cook and the food. I wish I could give him more.

Good BBQ. A nice pit stop on the way north for Christmas. You won’t meet friendlier folks.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The brisket and sausage are some of the best I have ever had. Location a bit off the beaten path but the food would win in any BBQ competition. Cobbler was home made and delish. This is on my list of top flight BBQ cooked with Hickory wood.

Wow! The best BBQ I have ever had. Great sauce, great smoky flavor on the ribs. I had both the ribs and the brisket and they were both amazing. I’m so glad we stopped here. Service was also very good. Highly recommend this spot. Well worth a detour off the freeway.

Marshall, Texas, as far as I know, isn’t really famous for too much. This is a shame, because they should be famous for the BBQ Express. I’m a business traveler and one of my colleagues who’d been to Marshall recommended the BBQ Express to me. I’m glad they did! I can safely say they have some of the best BBQ in Texas. I ordered the rib sandwich, pinto beans, and cornbread; portion size was nice. The ribs were smoked to perfection, and the delicious sauce doesn’t taste like a store-bought concoction. Besides the outstanding food, the staff was extremely friendly and their enthusiasm for their own food adds to the great dining experience. If you visit Marshall, TX, I’d highly recommend stopping by here and trying it out.

JG score of 9⁄10(+3 for food, +2 for atmosphere, +1 for price, +0.5 for plastic bottle Diet Dr Pepper, +0.5 for service and +2 for we return.) We love this place. We have been coming here since 3⁄2011. We have a review from the past on Zomato since we are relatively new to Unilocal. The food here is standout. I will list from memory all we have had here and there. All the entrees are exceptional. The burger is our favorite in Marshall… better than a Bubba Burger and Jucy’s and Porky’s. Try this one. The catfish is also 2nd to none… better that Porky’s. The breading is the key= exceptional. Our favorite along side Golden Chick catfish. The barbeque is good, the boudain is good and really all the entrees. You can’t go wrong here. The sides whether it be fries to vegetables like the greens are all good too. Our take home lesson from this place though is the burger and the catfish! The atmosphere is neat as well. It is off the beaten path and you can smell it when you get out of your car= it would be hard to live around there. The inside is old fashioned and quaint. This is a nice hole in the wall. TV’s are mounted in the rooms. We got to watch an episode of «the Bold and the Beautiful» and I think one of the blond guys on there is that punk kid from Karate Kid 3… anyway, rough neighborhood but cool place. The price is right here for the food. The drinks are the only shortcoming here. They do have Diet Dr Pepper but only in those slim skinny plastic bottles that Dr Pepper still charges us the same price for but slides us less drink like Reese’s and Hostess also try to pull off with their items… The service is friendly and nice. The owner is Herb and he always has something to say or talk about. This is one of our top places in Marshall.

Just go. It’s some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had(I know I’m a Yankee but I’ll tell you I’ve had plenty of disappointing BBQ down south — this place was not one of them). It’s all good but I think their briskets are the best. Get ‘em fatty and spicy. Yum!

This BBQ shack was awesome. I had the ribs and a double portion of the greens. This place knows hot to cook greens like a southerner should and the ribs tender and finger licking good.

This bbq is awesome. These are the types of places that make me love hole in the walls. This is a small house like shack in a residential area, & as soon as you step out of the car you smell the bbq smoking in the air. This man knows what he is doing. This place is underrated & it should have been packed in there. This is the best bbq I have had in this whole area. Throughout Jefferson or Longview or Marshall. This place wins

Not impressed. Not as bad as Dickey’s BBQ but I won’t be returning. When I placed my order for boudain, the cook warmed it up in the microwave. I’ve never been to a BBQ joint and ordered meat and they warm it up in a microwave. When I got it, it was still lukewarm. The potato salad had NO flavor whatsoever. Tasted like eating plain mashed potatoes with no seasoning on them. The deviled eggs were good. The cook was friendly. Was going to get a piece of cake but they were all burned black on the bottom. The barbecue sauce tastes very tomatoey, kind of more like a spicy ketchup. The sliced bread(Sunbeam) and the two deviled eggs were the only good part about this $ 12 meal. The microwaved, lukewarm boudain wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great. There was a lot of it but I threw it away because it wasn’t hot and it tasted very smokey, like lighter fluid almost. Again, don’t want to slam them because the man was friendly enough but I will not be returning, ever.

Great off the beaten path BBQ! The greens are the best !!! All of the meat is tasty, cornbread was thick, sloppy Joes was good. The potato salad was a little too creamy for my liking so I wouldn’t suggest it, but everything else was amazing. The staff was very friendly and lots of regulars came in. Definitely a place to stop.

We pass through Marshall, TX once a year every year. We usually eat at Cajun Tex, which is good, but we were craving something new. Saw good reviews for BBQ Express and decided to give it a try. It’s off the beaten path and when we pulled up the smoke was going hard– it smelled great! The staff was very friendly and the servings were huge! We tried the brisket, ribs and sausage — it was all fabulous. The brisket was extra fatty and super tender, which is amazing, but in big doses can be heavy. The ribs fell off the bone and were perfectly smoky. So glad to have found this gem! We’ll be back!

I just discovered this barbecue/soul food gem. Everything was outstanding. I went with a group of 5 and we sampled ribs, brisket, chicken, hot links, greens, beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, étouffée, peach cobbler, egg custard pie AND brownies. They have a steam table during the week with whatever soul food they feel like cooking. The owner even took us to the back to show us his smoker. The service could not have been friendlier and I will be a regular from now on!!! Wow!!!

Probably the best BBQ in Marshall but that isn’t saying much. Honestly there aren’t any good BBQ places here. I live here and love BBQ. If you want good BBQ drive 15 north to Jefferson and hit up Joseph’s Riverport BBQ.

Herb’s skills with hickory smoking put him up there with the best of Texas’ current pitmasters. I’m talking Lockhart Smokehouse, Pecan Lodge, Kreuze’s Market, Salt Lick. I walked in at 11 on a Saturday morning and was treated to a sample of a smoked chopped pork patty he’d just pulled off the smoker. It was outstanding. Came back at 1230 for brisket & ribs. Brisket was fantastic. Not dry or flaky. I got a nice fatty piece with some burnt ends. Pork ribs were also excellent. Deep, solid hickory flavor. I’ve said in the past that bad sides can ruin a good meat experience, but there was no danger of that here… I ordered beans & greens and there was a little spark of the divine in both. If you’re passing through Marshall on a day that Herb has awoken at 2am to take his briskets out of the smoker, you need to get here. Arrive at about 1145 to noon. If you live in Marshall, what are you waiting for?

This place is awesome. The ribs and brisket are both great. It is off the beaten path but it’s not hard to find. They have some of the best brisket you will ever have. Highly recommended if you like BBQ!

In the process of updating my recent reviews. Not much to add here except that BBQ Express keeps on doing what it has done so well for so long. Still the best Que in town by a mile. Brisket is still not as consistent as I would like, although it’s never less that very good. Catch it just right, it almost as good as Louie Mueller’s, but you’ll have to tell Herbert to put the sauce on the side. Ribs are generally better than the brisket. I could eat a water bucket full of them and still be hungry for more. Chicken is excellent. Sausage is the weakest link in the chain, but still very serviceable. Sides are good to excellent. Very friendly service. Good folks and good Que. What’s not to like!
