Found this place by accident as we exited the freeway to go elsewhere. Food was homemade and good. I had the catfish sandwich which was hot and tasty. Try them out if you are in the area. There are some good unique items on the menu.

Stopped in here for breakfast on a Tuesday morning on my way out to visit Shenandoah National Park to see the leaves turning. Ordered the sausage gravy and biscuits, plus corned beef hash and two eggs over easy and coffee. The sausage gravy needed to be hotter temperature-wise, it was luke warm. The corned beef hash was canned hash. The best part of the meal was the eggs — ordered over easy, were cooked perfectly. And the coffee was decent. While paying my bill, I shared with the woman ringing me out they need to do something about the temp of the sausage gravy. She said she would pass it on to the kitchen. Service was good.

After seeing mixed reviews on Old Salem I decided to give it a try. I have now been there twice(once for breakfast, once for dinner) Love the family style atmosphere, and homely feeling that the place puts off. As for the food, it was delicious and the prices were pretty fair. I will most defiantly be returning on a regular basis. The place recently added an outdoor patio! A+++

It was nice to see a male waiter who was on the ball. He gave great service and good tips on fun things to do in the area. I was very pleased with our meal, hot and super tasty. I look forward to visiting again, 2 thumbs up for this place.

Me and my boyfriend were driving from DC to Blacksburg and saw a Fosters sign on the highway and thought it seemed different than McDonalds etc. We saw Old Salem Diner right by it and decided to go there instead. Boy were we happy with our choice. Small Town diner, pretty cool Esso sign on the wall. Regulars everywhere, drinking at one o’clock. Ha. I got a BLT and he got a patty melt. Proper classic diner food that delivered. He got onion rings that I tasted and they were very good. Don’t think homemade but still excellent. I ordered the fried pickles. holy crap they were good. Thinly sliced, salty, and the breading was perfect. I like that the menu was not too big. I tend to thing big menus show you are a rookie in the business trying to please everyone but it just ends up a hot mess. Waitress was adorable and helpful. She was a hard worker I could tell. I don’t know if this matters but I’m a career waitress, mostly in DC. I’ve worked at diners, pubs, and mainly formal restaurants and this place was good. Sometimes you just need a break from the trendy concept foods and you just want to get back to down home simple food. Thanks guys we will come thru again on our visits to DC and MD. PS. I hate Unilocal as you can tell I don’t review much. but the other reviews for this place I cannot stand behind. I’ve only been once, but still. BAI!

My wife and I met some friends here for lunch. We both ordered grilled cheese sandwiches and we asked them to add turkey. The place was almost empty(maybe one other sat table) but, unfortunately, they still forgot the turkey in both sandwiches. We brought it to the attention of our waitress, Anna.(She was attentive!) the response from the kitchen was that they would send out the turkey on the side and we could add it in ourselves. Needless to say, you try ripping open a pressed, grilled cheese sandwich to add something inside and it just becomes a shredded mess. Not to mention the turkey looked like it just can out of a lukewarm microwave. It wouldn’t have been hard to offer to remake the sandwich. We ordered some bread pudding to make up for the half-eaten, lackluster meal. The bread pudding was super good! Two stars for Anna and the bread pudding.

I’m pleased to report that Kevin Whitener is now helming the new location in the Food Lion shopping center on Winchester rd. I’ve been a fan of his since his days of owning the Rail Stop in the Plains down the road. Kevin always comes out for a chat and to make sure everything is good. He’s a great chef and a really nice guy. I love the country fried steak.

Have tried Old Salem twice. First time was pretty good. Second time a disaster. Had to walk out due to the atmosphere.

The new cook, Kevin is a local treasure. The food has greatly improved and I found the service efficient and friendly. This is diner food, period. You won’t find anything out of the norm, and healthy options are few. As Marshall grows and changes, I hope this diner will add more fresh ingredients and healthy dining options, but for now this is the best breakfast in Marshall.
