The Discount Mart on the North side of Perkins Avenue between 4th and 5th serves the function of a dollar store in this small, predominantly Hispanic, farming community. Being a small independent store, it doesn’t have the purchasing power of one of the major chain stores which may explain why the prices tend to be slightly higher, though not unreasonably so. Items which would be $ 1 at Dollar Tree of 99 Cent Only are $ 1.49 or $ 1.99 here, still cheaper than you’d find at a regular store. Discount mart carries accessories such as scarves, hats, scarves, and gloves displayed in laundry baskets up near the cash register. They have a huge selection of supplies for the office, cleaning, and party planning. They carry toys, toiletries, bath and body products, hair accessories, dishware, and kitchen gadgets. There is an entire aisle full of small electric appliances like toasters, waffle irons, food processors, coffee makers, and blenders. Sunglasses and reading glasses are $ 2.99 each. CDs of Mexican music(with scandalously clad models gracing the cover art) are $ 3.99 each. The prices are slightly higher than at the dollar stores, but they are providing an important service to members of this community, many of whom may not have access to larger discount chain stores.
