I have to say that Fireman’s Park provides getaway without having to travel a long distance. I personally love kayaking but don’t always have the time to travel the distance to partake in one of my favorite activities. However, with Fireman’s Park $ 5 boat rentals I can enjoy kayaking in the town lake! It is so easy to forget that you are surrounded by city life. This park is a hidden gem for the City of McAllen. An excellent place for a picnic, volleyball, trail walking, or feeding the many many ducks that walk around the park.

What a cool place to discover on my afternoon walk! Fireman’s Park has been completely overhauled and now includes a lake, a beach, sand volleyball, jungle gyms, kayaking, an island, picnic tables, a walking trail, and clean bathrooms! Oh, and ducks. Lots of ducks just randomly walking around. It was the most surreal thing to stroll along the water, sit on the beach and gaze at wildlife in the middle of 2nd Street. It made me kind of sad that I was the only person there though and that more people aren’t taking advantage of this little oasis! I think kayaking was $ 5 for 30 minutes(very reasonable) and everything else is open access. If you’re driving, they’ve added about 20 more parking spaces on the east side and if you’re walking, it’s right off the 2nd St. walking trail on Business 83.
