Unilocal is all about cool, local businesses, right? Well, Yesterday’s Jewels is as good as it gets. This is a small, off the beaten path jewelry store that offers a solid assortment of estate and new items. It’s right in «downtown» Mechanicsville on Richmond’s eastern side. Everyone always refers to the bank that literally is a huge windmill when talking about this little main street. As a bonus it is very close to Carter’s Pig Pen BBQ so you can get your fix after getting adorned. Carter’s will have to be my next review. Back to the jewels… The coolest thing about Yesterday’s Jewels is the jeweler himself, Bill. He is usually at the shop and if you don’t see him, he is back behind his counter fixing something. Bill is a true jeweler and a gentleman. He will give you the honest scoop on whatever he has in stock or whatever you bring him. He is the perfect person to ask about that old antique ring or other piece of jewelry that was handed down to you. My favorite part of the store is not the estate or new pieces that he has for sale. Ask Bill about the things that he made personally. There are always a few in the store. I purchased my wife’s engagement ring at this store several years ago and the ring was one that he made. Talk to him about your ideas and maybe he can work something up for you. You will walk out with a unique piece that was made by the guy you just talked to. Don’t go to Jared’s…check out Yesterday’s Jewels. To top it all off, Bill is also a local author. He has a series of books that he has written that are loosely based on his family’s history in America. What else could you want?
