I became interested in trying Oom Yung Doe when I found an ad that said«learn the true meaning of core strength from an eastern perspective». About 3 years ago I was in a bad car accident and had been dealing with chronic back pain form a herniated disk. I found some relief from Physical therapy, but I felt that it was a 2 step forward 1 step back kind of process for me. At 22 years old and being a former athlete, feeling held back by my body was more than stressful. It was hard to be myself. I had become so fearful of further injuring myself that I wasn’t sure if a form of traditional martial arts was the best idea. But luckily I was desperate and feeling spontaneous. The Assistant Regional Head Instructor Alex recognized my fear and let me know that this was something anyone could do(even with past medical issues) and their step by step method will only make my back stronger with no risk of injury. This was hard for me to believe because I could barely sit comfortably long enough to have this conversation. He demonstrated some movements that I could learn and gave me some simple things to work on at home. I instantly saw some relief with these easy to do movements. In just 2 weeks I stopped going to physical therapy because it could not match with the improvements I was making. It has been all positive for me. Im getting stronger every week and constantly shocked by the things Im able to do now. The exciting thing is that its only been 3 months since Ive started. I am happier than ever and clear headed finally. I have met other people here with similar stories and it doesn’t surprise me now. It has everything to do with their proven system of improving anyones condition. I feel lucky to know of this way to better health, and look forward to introducing this option to anyone looking to improve their condition.

UPDATE: It has been a year and 8 months since I wrote my review of Oom Yung Doe. I felt that people investigating this school would like to know my opinion after being at OYD for a while. I am now a few months short of 64 years old. I haven’t been in such good shape since my 30’s! I feel extremely lucky to have found a school whose purpose is to improve your physical and mental condition while teaching you martial arts. My flexibility has improved in quantum leaps. I am able to move in ways that I never thought possible. I am able to hold my breath many times longer than when I joined the school. My knee arthritis hasn’t bothered me in a year and a half. My Achilles tendonitis is gone. I can jump higher than I ever could. My balance is better. I am better able to quiet my mind, not an easy feat since I have ADD and OCD. My brother who is a third degree black belt in a Mixed Martial art and a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Doe, is amazed at the power of my strike after practicing Oom Yung Doe style«Iron Hand» for a year and a half. My wife is thrilled at my accomplishments and also says that I am a much easier, relaxed person to live with. Truly, I can’t say anything bad. I initially expected to practice for 2 and a half years or so and then stop. Despite how rigorous the practices can be, I now intend to continue at this school. My improvement is just so clear to me. I can see where all my work is taking me and I like it very much.

If you’re looking for a movement method that will keep you in shape, keep you motivated, give you a moment of peace in an otherwise hectic life, and give you incredible new skills, this is the place for you. Oom Yung Doe combines movement and meditation in a balance to create individualized programs for each and every student. The instructors are very knowledgable and give individualized attention, as well as are flexible in their schedules. Not only are there classes every weekday in the afternoon and evening, plus on Saturdays, but more than once, when I could not make it in for a class, an instructor has moved his schedule around so I could come in. If you are dedicated to the school, the school will be dedicated to you. Movement-wise, students study forms in eight different types and styles of martial arts, including many different weapons. While there is not an emphasis put on sparring, there are frequent self-defense portions of class so that students can defend themselves if faced with a bad situation. Students are also taught movements to help in medical issues they might have coming in, or to help prevent issues from coming up in the future. I have never been in better shape in my life. On top of it all, the school puts an emphasis on helping others in your every day life. While the message can get repetitive, it is always a good reminder that while you are helping yourself, you can always spend a little extra effort to help a fellow human being. Overall, I would highly recommend this school.
