I don’t love this place(yet) but I’ll come back. The process of making an appointment was easy, but they dont offer all of the services they list online, so check ahead before make plans. I didn’t have to wait long after my appointment time to be seated. It was clear they work with natural hair a lot based on the way they worked with my hair. On their website, they make a big fuss of «consultations,» so I signed up to have one, but they never told me anything about the health of my hair, care suggestions, etc. I suppose I could have asked because they possibly just forgot. I was underwhelmed with my hairstyle(chunky twist out), but the flat twist out on the other customers looked really pretty so maybe I’ll do that next time. Overall, a pretty decent experience.

A couple of month’s ago, I decided to give this place a shot. I went in and asked for an appointment that same week. Luckily they were able to fit me in with short notice. I arrived at the salon right at the time of my appointment. I gave the receptionist my name and he directed me to the stylist’s chair. I didn’t even have to sit in the waiting area. The young lady, Destiny, asked me what I had in mind. I showed her a photograph of the style I wanted. She gave it a glance and said«Okay.» She washed my hair and blew it dry. Surprisingly, this was not a painful experience. She then made my hair BEAUTIFUL. I was pleased as punch when I left about 2 hours later. I had a fantastic, professional ‘do and I didn’t have to stay there all day. As I walked away, I thought ‘this was too good to be true. I like my hair and I wasn’t imprisoned for hours first… this was a fluke.‘ Yesterday, I went back to A Natural Affair. I scheduled my appointment online this time, with Jewell. I walked in at my scheduled time and was directed to Jewell’s chair by the receptionist. I showed her a photo of what I wanted. She gently washed and detangled my hair. Two hours later, I walked out looking AMAZING. The stylists here are very nice and know how to make natural hair really shine. The vibe inside is relaxed and upbeat. The stylists are professional and seem to enjoy working together. They respect your time. There’s no waiting around. You come in, get your services, and go. Twist-outs, extensions, braids, updos, locs, — they do it all. I was really impressed!

Okay I will admit it, I have been in Memphis for a year and a half and still hadn’t settled on a place to get my mop flopped. Really I was disappointed in the shops that I went to… it seems they either weren’t exactly sure what to do with my curls and spent significant amounts of time trying to convince me that I needed a texturizer or a weave OR they did an okay job taking care of my hair but styled like they were stuck circa 1985. I had recently encountered quite a few sistas whose hair looked great… healthy, beautifully styled and the one thing all these women had in common was recommending this place. For all my natural curly sistas out there… THIS is the place for you. They do online scheduling which is quite convienent. The staff is professional, friendly, and chatty(but not annoyingly so). They actually take you at the time of your appointment(occassionaly a radical concept at a black hair salon). I have seen Stephanie and Jewel so far and both have done an excellent job with my hair. I have had a rod set and flat twist updo done by Stephanie that people simply could not stop complimenting me on and Jewel did the flatiron that lasted almost two weeks before it got fluffy. My only minor complaint is that their estimated times for services are about 20−30min too short(hence the reason I didn’t give 5 stars)…although they seem to do much better with times for the early morning appointments. Bottom line… if you have natural hair and want a variety of styling options(including sisterlocks and traditional loc care), people who care about your hair’s health and who will not let you leave without looking absolutely fabulous then run not walk to this salon and get your butter whipped!

They are a great group of ladies who love to do hair. The environment/music is youthful, upbeat and positive They all get along well, which makes it low on the drama meter. I like the Schedulicity web portal to book my appointments and the receipt that is sent to me via email at the close of my service. Ashley, the receptionist, is professional by contacting you via phone to confirm your appt and call to let you know that you can come in earlier. I haven’t had any problems at all. I travel frequently and this is my second time as a customer. I’ve been to Urbanbella(Atlanta), Khamit Kinks(NYC) and Sayblee(Miami), but the signature products offered at Natural Affair have been the best result. No itching or flaking. The set is still lasting since Saturday. Destiny did my flexirods this past visit and they were great and just as good as when Olga did them. I’m booking my appointment when I go at Christmas time. They recently added Sierra to the group to wash your hair, which decreased my wait time. I can’t think of anything that they need to improve so I gave them a top rating. As a woman of color, it is refreshing and encouraging to see a group of women running their business with integrity and showing value for their work. Many will complain that it’s expensive, but your stylist is with you the entire time. Natural hair takes longer than a blow out so you get what you pay for…

Do Not go to this place! Although everyone is nice, I feel the owner should run a much better(professional) establishment. I have only been there once & this is my 1st ever natural hair disaster! I was suppose to have my hair trimmed not cut & the stylist ended up cutting 3 – 4 inches off my hair! My hair was down my back stretched(my hair is very curly) out while wet, now its not even to my neck line. The services are overly priced & I’ve received much better service at other salons in the area. For them to specialize in natural hair care my stylist technique for detangling & shampooing were terrible. I felt like she was damaging my hair in the process instead of handling my hair with care. I never use combs to detangle only my fingers & being a natural hair salon I assumed they would do the same. The owner who also does hair in the salon started eating a plate of food while at her work station with her client in the middle of doing that clients hair! If I could give this place zero stars I would! Please save your time & money.
