A fair price for a comfortable stay. While being on road trip across the country, we were set on finding nice places to stay without breaking the bank. This Days Inn met our needs. The room was very homey with two desks, a couch and a king sized bed. Everything was clean and the wifi worked well. Continental breakfast was standard, but we noticed that even around 10 o’clock it was still open with plenty of option for food and drink. Most places tend to close up shop by 8 or 9 for breakfast. The price for a room was 60 bucks, which is reasonable given the comfort level. I would recommend this Days Inn.

I try to avoid giving one star, I really do, but I don’t have any choice in the case of this Days Inn. I tried to check into a Unilocal hotel with a high rating, but it being Memorial Day weekend and not having a prior reservation I ended up at this Days Inn which is a few minutes drive from Graceland(I’m not an Elvis acolyte, I just figured since I was in Memphis, I should go see what all the hubbub was about). I won’t go into my background, but let’s say that I’m not unfamiliar with the seedier section of most towns. This Days Inn isn’t in the seedy section, it’s surrounded by an industrial area and, in my experience, in many cities that’s a fairly safe area. I got a good price on the room and the people at the desk were pleasant and interactive as they checked me in. My first hint of trouble was walking down the corridor to my room and noticing the heavily stained carpet and scratches on some of the doors. There was also the smell of strong industrial cleaner. Hackles up, I entered my room and found it fairly normal except that it smelled like urine intense, nose burning urine. If I’d been with someone, I would have insisted we leave, but by myself, I figured I could tough it out overnight. That night, about every hour after I went to sleep, clicking noises would start at random intervals and wake me up. They seemed to be coming from the area of the vanity, but I could never localize them further than that or figure out what caused them. Needless to say, though the bed was soft and comfortable, my sleep was restless. Next morning I was up early and started with a shower. Toweling off I found a long black hair on my towel. I have short brown to greying hair so I intuited that it wasn’t mine. Whether It was on the towell to begin with or I picked it up from the bed and transferred it to the towel, I don’t know, but it was one of those moments when you wonder what else you’ve been sharing with the previous guests of the room. Breakfast in the morning was the standard, boring fair and the front desk was again pleasant and interactive. I’ve been driving cross country since November 2010 and this is by far the worst place I’ve stayed. I would never willingly go back, no matter how friendly the staff are. The cost is cheap compared to other hotels in Memphis, but I’ve stayed at comparably priced hotels in several cities that had much better upkeep and no smell of urine.
