I went here a few times in my Rhodes college days but until recently this place has been off my radar(minus seeing it as I drive by down Poplar). But when a friend told me that Monday night is open mic comedy night… well, I had to go see for myself. I used to perform stand-up in LA at the Comedy Store and the Hollywood Improv and I’ll always have the itch to do it… if only I had the time! This sounds terrible, but I was preparing myself for the worst. There are really funny people in town though and a few out-of-towners! If you’re bored on a Monday night and in the need for a laugh, you should definitely check them out! But just know that this is a dive bar in every sense of the word.(You may have seen it in the movie, Hustle & Flow.) They have drinks, food and live music. Although I seem to only recall them serving beer and jello shots? I haven’t had their food, mostly because I didn’t know they did but apparently they also serve lunch! Please excuse me while I remain skeptical and scared. Great place to watch live music… but I wish they had a wider alcohol selection. Definitely go if there is something cool to do or see, which is often!

This is the type of place that you go when you’re in sweats and/or you really just want to hunker down with a beer with friends and participate in the meat market vibe of a club. It’s a little daunting from the outside, and the interior is nothing fancy, but people mind their own, and you can relax with some friends over beers or bar food. Trivia Wednesdays can be pretty fun — they start at 8 p.m.

Another great little dive bar! Its a cool ‘garage-den’ of a place that has been used for a ZZ Top video and a film(Hustle & Flow). Known for cheap beer and greasy burgers, Poplar Lounge attracts an eclectic crowd depending on what band is playing. The bar tends to generate a ‘Bermuda Triangle’, type affect after midnight-suddenly its almost dawn and time to leave.
