My wife and I were spending a long weekend in Mendocino and Glendeven’s Bistro 150 group farm-to-table dinner at the sister Inn at Cobbler’s Walk was our Saturday dinning option. First and foremost, the overall experience of the group dinner was great. We had a table full of interesting and engaging people, among them a newly-engaged couple ecstatic with their news. However, the meal itself was simply decent. The amuse bouche was a butternut squash soup shot. Not a connoisseur of butternut squash soup, I found it adequate; however, my wife, who makes homemade butternut squash regularly was disappointed. The first course, a caramelized leek and goat cheese tart was quite delicious and was one of two standouts for the meal. The second course, an artichoke and shitake bisque was also passable. I love artichokes and am not generally a fan of mushrooms; however, neither element came to the fore with this bisque, which was overwhelmed by a tanginess that I can only attribute to a vinegar base. For the entrée, I had the true cod. As with most cod, it was fairly tasteless and bland and was lacking in either a sauce or a collection of spices to give it something to say. Finally, the desert of fresh cinnamon donut holes and chocolate merringues was delicious, the second of two standouts. The wine pairings were also notable, with the Bergin-Sipila, Redwood Valley AVA, Reserve Chardonnay, 2012 the standout among all very good wines. The service – including the owner John – was prompt, warm, and friendly. Bottom line, if you get a great table group as we did, the Bistro | 150 experience will be a lot of fun; however, keep your menu expectations in check and it’ll be a good experience.
