I will never go back to this Fry’s Marketplace. In fact my experience was so bad that I will NEVER go into a Fry’s Marketplace. I’ll admit that it may have looked weird because I’m a 23 year old young looking male in shorts, t-shirt and a hat buying some Wine but I never thought I would be embarrassed like this. I also had 6 steaks, butter, onion, garlic, and mushrooms. Obviously I was making dinner for people and I had one bottle of Riesling to go with dinner. I get to cashier Barb and she looks me up and down makes a face and proceeds to ask for my ID. I hand over my ID to her, first clue to her that I possibly didn’t know laws around here when I handed her my HAWAII State Identification Card issued by the State of Hawaii. Barb starts waiving her hands, shaking her head saying No, we don’t accept this, we don’t accept this, looking around waiving her hands. Instantly embarrassing me, so I said«Oh, thats actually a Hawaii state ID.» She takes back from me and I smiled at her and she starts waiving her hand again«No, No, its state law state law we do NOT accept out-of-state IDs, only Drivers License, thats a STATELAWSTATELAW.» So then I said, «Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t know that.» While continuing to make gestures around her(felt like she was a causing a scene I nervously looking around because I was so embarrassed) she says«It’s state law who doesn’t know that?!». Wouldn’t you think a person who has an out of state ID may be visiting someone?! So then I was thinking about all the bars and restaurants I drank at so because I was curious and I didn’t run into this again, I simple asked«Oh so restaurants and grocery stores are different then huh?» «What an interesting law…» She proceeded to call over a manager on mic for assistance. She again told«its state law everyone should be following that». She tells the manager«Isn’t it state law that we only accept out of state drivers license and not IDs?» and the manager said, «Yes because there are so many different state IDs its a law that we only accept out of state drivers license.» This is when I knew something was up because in Hawaii, I’m a server and they have identification books you can look at the make sure IDs from other states are real. But then I felt like everyone was looking at me so she asked me to enter my membership number but told her, «Its okay its my friends number and I’m too embarrassed I just want to leave.» This is the only reason they deserve a 1 star because she let me use her card so I could receive the discounts but I will never be going to a FRY’s again. BTW Manager & Cashier Barb — Straight from the FAQ of your Arizona Liquor commission«What are the acceptable forms of identification? (1) A driver’s license from any state or Canada provided it includes a picture of the licensee,(2) an identification card issued by any state or Canada,» While any store has the right to refuse service from any individual, I do not believe it is the right thing to do to lie to them and make up a fictitious law. If Barb did not want to accept my ID then tell me you wont accept it but don’t make me feel like I was an idiot and this was a well known law. Get your things together FRY Marketplace.
