This is such an unprepossessing little place, but the food is great. It’s not your«Sushi, Sashimi, Sake» place: it’s Japanese home cooking done well. I had mackerel my son had Ka-re.

This place is one of the only authentic Japanese restaurants in Arizona! A mom n pop type restaraunt, it is very affordable! I ordered tenzaru soba and they gave a HUGE portion of tempura! I ordered a katsu don to go and was pretty disappointed with the portion size though. However, for the price, this place is great if you’re looking for Japanese!

Came here for the first time tonight and really enjoyed it! I got the beef udon and my boyfriend got the tonkotsu ramen, both were so good! I especially loved the tonkotsu broth of my boyfriend’s ramen, I was stealing spoonfuls of it the whole time, which is fair, because he was stealing my beef. It was hard to stick just to our own bowls because everything was so tasty. It looked like the place was mainly run by the owner and one other woman, so service(mostly taking your order) is a bit slow, but the food comes out relatively quick. The owner is busy, so he doesn’t have much time to be über-friendly to everyone, but by no means was he rude at all – some other reviews made it sound that he was, but I wanted to make it clear that he was very polite with us! We already have plans to visit again, so I highly recommend checking this place out if you like Japanese food!

I have never been to a restaurant more traditionally Japanese than this one. Not only does this place look authentic, but the food is truly authentic Japanese food. The atmosphere is very quiet and peaceful and the owners are very nice. Don’t expect a noisy, crowded environment with loud background music because you certainly won’t find those things here. I ordered the vegetable tempura entrée, which was very delicious and came with quite a lot(battered vegetables and tofu, sukiyaki sauce, edamame soybeans, fried tofu, miso soup, white rice, and a small salad). I especially liked the battered veggies and would come back just to have them again. I love the melon cream soda and would totally recommend it. Overall, I was very satisfied with my experience and would definitely come here again.

I have nothing bad to say about this place, that’s why they get 5 stars! I love little local family owned places like this, and walking into it, you feel like you’re in Japan because you see places like this all over there. Korea too, but this is Japanese food. I like how people complain about it being silent in there, but if you’ve been to Japan, many places are like that there especially in the smaller towns. It’s actually kind of nice. It’s only awkward if you make it so. Just saying. You go in and sit down, the owner comes to take your order, and is straight to the point but very nice. We got him talking a lot at check out but I will get to that later. I ordered the chicken katsu curry dinner, and they give you so much food for your money. Huge plate of curry, delicious and rich, with a side salad, gyoza, and more. I recommend getting a melon cream soda, or even Boba. Yum yum. It didn’t take long to get our order at all as well. At check out, we had to go up to the counter to pay and they bank through Chase so they have a chip reader and swiper via Chase bank. It also offers to add a tip and you can do by percentage or exact tip price you want to add. The owner invited us to Matsuri Festival and said he will have a food booth there, and really opened up to us after that. So cute.

I got the eel that comes with rice and soup. The fish entrée was not enough to share but if you get a dinner entrée it comes with a ton of food that my husband was not able to get through and looked enough for two people. I also got the melon cream soda. Super sweet but good enough to try. Many of the other reviews mention the owner not being friendly. I disagree. We were second in line to pay, and he accidentally rang us up first. He had a hard time explaining what he had done and smiled when we figured out what he was getting at. The issue could be more of a language/culture barrier rather than not caring to give menu suggestions. The place feels and tastes real authentic although I do agree it could be wiped down, the blinds we sat next to looked like they hadn’t been clean since they were put up. Also it’s uncomfortably silent, so I don’t suggest bringing first dates.

They shouldnt be considered a sushi place. They just offer 8 types of rolls. We wanted to have sushi for lunch and that ended up being a fail. We had two rolls, that were very small for the price. The tempura roll had only 4 pieces and the salmon had 6 tiny ones. The bento special wanst very good but there was a lot of different vegetables and chicken. I dont think I would go back.

I had lunch here today with a friend around 1pm, and it was empty, except for one or two parties. However, I felt reassured when I realized the owner was Japanese. I ordered the Katsu-don and my friend ordered the unagi don off the lunch menu, so both of our orders were each under $ 10. Really reasonable, especially with the addition of miso soup, salad, and dumpling & chicken skewer. We both ate everything — we were super hungry but the meal was also really good. Décor is alright — pretty outdated, but the food was great, so I can’t complain too much. I would definitely come back!

Very quiet here — no TV, no background music, no chatting from the kitchen. Limited greeting from the owner as others said. But I feel all customers are treated the same when I’m here. Their Takoyaki is fried and soft, which I thought should be baked and not that greasy. However the unagi don is good to try. As I finished typing things above, one group of customers ask for some recommendations for the entrees, and the owner shrugged his shoulders, saying something but didn’t come to them. I don’t think they got helpful advice as they are still confused.

I’ve been going to this restaurant for years. The nicest couple runs this restaurant, serving japaense comfort food like katsu and unagi don. Their lunch and dinner combos are both a great deal with a good amount of the entrée, a dumpling, a salad and a chicken appetizer that I don’t know the name of, as well as miso soup. I always recommend the pork katsu curry, and everyone I’ve taken here for lunch or dinner has enjoyed it!

This place is a great choice if you want Japanese food other than sushi. The lunch/dinner combinations are fairly priced and comes with a miso soup, small salad, gyoza, and a chicken skewer. I’m also a big fan of their udon soup. I got the nabe-yaki udon during their dinner hours and it was delicious! Everything here tasted fresh and very authentic. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was because the air in the restaurant felt a little warm and humid. The air conditioning was operated by ceiling fans, so it doesn’t help when you’re eating hot food. It can also be a little awkward when you’re the only table sitting there because there’s no music playing in the background. This place is definitely a hole in the wall, but the food is great!!!

This is a diner. A Japanese diner where the curry, dumplings and noodles are made to order. I love this place. Udon, tempeh and tofu are the best things here. The hot and cold noodles are great. The couple who runs it are eager to please and the food is delicious. All the tofu dishes are delicious if that’s your diet, we just found them to be especially tasty.

This place has amazing Japanese food. It is extremely authentic and run by a Japanese couple. Everything tastes fresh, even the Eel(which is often not fresh tasting in AZ) and they make everything down to the salad dressing in house. The restaurant itself is somewhat quaint but again, the food is great. Good lunch specials and they are open m-sat( Unilocal says they are closed Thursday’s but that is not true!)

I used to go to Happy Bowl in Tempe(Baseline and Rural) in the 90’s and they had the best udon. I used to go eat their udon at least once a week during my high school years. After graduating, I moved on with my life and naturally forgot about this place. Then I found this place one day and i discovered that it was owned by the same owner as happy bowl! I hadn’t seen him in almost 20 years but the udon was just as great as i remember. Thick plump noodles and yummy broth. If you’re looking for some decent bowl of udon noodle, i highly recommend this restaurant.

A mild mannered gentleman and his wife run this low key, cute restaurant. Quick service and generous portions of the dinner bento boxes keep me coming back. It is nice to see them at the popular Matsuri festival in Phoenix every year.

I have been conning here for ten years. He’s old and loveable gentleman from Japan. His bento boxes are great to go. His yakitori is known to cause drooling. His ginger salad is light and yet robust. His food is classical Japanese you cannot find anywhere else. No gimmicks, no bull rolls. He serves cold noodle dishes in the summer which is fine cusine a lot of Arizonaians have never tried. I recommend his udon, dipped in the perfection, with sprinkles of seaweed and scallions. His green tea is actually matcha which is ceromony grade Japanese tea. For the last ten years he has brought us a quality from Japan no one else can compare. He is even the featured culinary contributor to the Masturi(spring festival). If you haven’t tried his food you are wrong. Buddhist and Vegan friendly dishes have kept me coming back for more. I have never been disappointed by his dishes. He takes pride in his work and it shows. Also try his octopus balls.

Fantastic authentic Japanese! Don’t go for the atmosphere, however food was delicious. Adventurous kids will enjoy, picky kids won’t be happy. Not so much a sushi place although they do offer it. Go for the noodles, and other traditional Japanese.

A great lunch place — lots of delicious food for reasonable prices. I’m fond of the chicken teriyaki lunch special, which comes with teriyaki chicken over rice, a side salad, a chicken skewer, a mix of shrimp and vegetable tempura, and a chicken and veggie gyoza. The food arrives quickly(but not too quickly) and is well cooked. The interior is very low frills, just a handful of tables and booths to seat yourself at. I worry how this place stays in business because, as other reviewers have pointed out, it is rarely busy. It’s one of the few places worth visiting in Mesa though, and will fuel any Japanese craving at an inexpensive cost.

This place is legit. If you’re looking for some awesome, authentic udon, you’ve found the right place. My boyfriend and I stopped in for dinner. I can only assume they do a lot of business at lunch because there was only 1 guy sitting in there when we arrived and only one other couple came in while we were there. How do they stay open? Anyway. They guy behind the counter handed us menus and we sat down. After a few minutes we hear«you ready to order?» we yell back«no.» A few minutes later we were ready and the guy came over to take our order. I went for the tempura upon and my boyfriend ordered the beef udon. We also ordered a spam musubi to share. The musubi came out first. It was disappointing. The spam was thin and overcooked. The whole thing was just kinda smooshed down. Not great. Luckily the udon made up for it. Mine came with a huge bowl of noodles, and an even huger bowl of tempura — several shrimps, eggplant, squash, potato, tomato –it was a ton of food. My boyfriend’s was loaded with beef and again a large portion. Both came with 2 pieces of some kind of sushi I’m not familiar with, it was rice wrapped up in an eggy pastry-like shell and it was cold. Neither of us cared for that so we just enjoyed the udon. We stuffed ourselves silly with the noodles and tempura, and I loved it. When we were done we just went up to the counter and paid. The guy was very nice, just don’t expect a lot of table service. It would be nice if they played some music though. When it’s only you and one other table sitting in silence it can feel a little awkward. But otherwise this place is great. I’ll definitely be back for more udon and I really want to try their tonkatsu!
