Captain’s Tavern looks like it hasn’t been remodeled since it opened in the 70’s, and their only attempt to remain current has been to throw together a sushi menu insert that is laughably out of place. To get into the place you have to push through its heavy wooden doors, which is pretty telling, don’t you think? I’m not hating. I’ve been eating at the tavern for at least a decade, and as long as the parking is easy and the food continues to be solid, I’ll keep coming back. I would steer clear of the Oysters Rockefeller, which have just a bit too much Pernod, and the shrimp macadamia, which is Weight Watchers sized but not priced. The stuffed dolphin, Dijon roasted snapper, and yellowtail macadamia are all consistently good. Plus their banana pie is outrageous. There’s a reason this place has been open for 40+ years and still has a wait on the weekends.

The hostess is extremely rude, service was awful and the food took forever for just simple appetizers(lobster bisque soup and shrimp cocktail). The shrimp cocktail cost $ 16 and brought 5 very small shrimp. I will not be coming back after this sorry experience.

Fresh seafood flown in daily, large menu of inexpensive wines, good service. Basic old school atmosphere. Ample parking. A Miami institution.

Long waiting to take our order, they served my food with very little to eat because I asked no peppers or onion on the Brazilian stew. I was given a dirty spoon like someone used it. Absolutely Disgusting!!!

Came to Miami to visit family. Thought it would be special to go to Captains Tavern for lunch. Turned in to a 2 hours lunch. Food took forever, shrimp was frozen not fresh. Server was nice but had too many tables. If I hadn’t been on vacation with family and friends I would have walked out. Had to pay for bread because bread isn’t served at lunch. An over all disappointment, won’t be back!

Not for everyone. Very simple and fresh seafood but somewhat of a throwback restaurant. The place needs updating and the food menu, although with many options, is not modern, but it works. By the way, fantastic and extensive wine list. I’ve been coming here for many years.

Love this place. Love the sea bass. Service was a little slow but it was busy. Sometimes I wish they would update the place but then it wouldn’t be the same old neighborhood spot. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to add a window or two and to light the bar a little differently

Bring a warm sweater. This place is always like a refrigerator. Good, reliable seafood as one would think you’d find throughout Miami. Nautical décor. Decent waiting bar. The bartenders are a bit cocky, focused on the service bar and often ignoring bar customers. This is a staple for area residents. A place to take visiting relatives and kids home from college, etc. Sizzling black skillet mussels are one of my favorites. A 2 pound whole Maine lobster with potato, salad and warm bread at 29.99 is quite a steal. Ipswich clams are a treat from my New England roots. Not easy to find in Miami. Large variety of fish, well prepared. Service is ok.,

Visited Captain’s Tavern for the first time for a big birthday dinner a few weeks ago. The service was fast, friendly, and the staff was remarkably attentive to us — given that it was a full house that night. From the appetizers to dessert, I believe our table wound up ordering one of each menu item on the menu and everyone was impressed with the taste and quality of the food. I personally had the salmon which was fresh, delicious, and cooked to perfection. We were all picking at each other’s plates throughout the night. Great casual seafood joint.

Server was good, wine list is small and $ 10 a glass for everything. Sushi was fresh and tasty but not rolled very tight but again taste was really good. Had the Florida lobster tail and really enjoyed it but the ½ is not a lot of food so make sure to order an app or two. Enjoyed my experience and would come back.

Grouper was disgusting! Tasted fishy and dry. A plate full of bones. Their lobster special is very good. Service is good. Tried telling the owner but she didn’t seem to care. Wasted $ 60 on fish bones. Place used to be good, quality has gone down dramatically. Tuesday is the only day I would go for lobster special or their lunch specials. Forget about dinner there. Totally disappointed.

My husband and I have been going here with friends for years. We have been there through good and not so good food, but love the owner and his wife and love seeing friends. Sadly it was so bad tonight that I feel compelled to write this. It was a slow Thursday night and we sat immediately at our table and a new waiter finally came over. I had to order my own drink from the bar ask for bread and the waiter forgot to put our order in. If it was crowded, I could understand but the waiter stood at the front, watched tv and finally I had to ask for our food. At first he said it was on the way, which was a lie he had not put it in. Sorry, but it will be a long time before I go again. If the Captain’s wife is there, expect good service. Any other night you are on your own unless you know the waiter. It is too bad, was one of our favorite places. The food once it got there was good. They apologized, however, it should have never happened on a slow night.

When I arrived in Miami in the 1970’s Captain’s Tavern was the most reliable and best seafood restaurant around. Sadly, it no longer is reliable and has become overpriced as well. The restaurant is decorated the same way today as it was years ago and has an old feel but for some that is part of it’s charm, for other’s it’s a dump. I noticed on the menu that many of the crab dishes like the stuffed shrimp were made with«seafare crab.» I asked the waiter what that meant and he said«imitation crab.» That was the first sign that Captain’s Tavern had seen better days. After more questioning we discovered a lot of the Captain’s Tavern menu is frozen or imitation; not my idea of a good seafood house. We started with the conch fritters which our server assured us were house made. They were tasty and had all the elements of a good conch fritter except they were not cooked through and were uncooked in the center but well done on the outside. The fritters were served with a good spicy dipping sauce that went well with them. Next came the salad and bread. The salad was fresh but the rolls were obviously generic restaurant supply rolls that were heated and not very good. On to our entrees; my companion had the shrimp scampi over linquini. The four shrimp this dish came with were large and good but the dish lacked flavor and was mediocre at best. The other entrée was fresh Hog Fish, fried and served with a baked potato. The Hog Fish was overdone, thin, and hard and not the least bit good. The baked potato was served with sour cream and chives and was excellent. We finished with rum cake which was warm and tasty but boring. When the check came, the scampi dish was priced $ 1.00 more than what the menu stated which we did not make issue of, but our bill with tip was over $ 90.00 and the mediocre food was not worth that amount. Additionally, the service was slow; we waited a long time to order and again waited a long time for our salads/bread to be served. Another strange practice was that we were told we must put the tip down before they ran our card rather than after. We brought home most of the meal rather than eat it. Captain’s Tavern is no longer a favorite and in my opinion has slipped rather badly since my last visit. We were disppointed to the point that we would not return.

When I walked in, my first thought was to walk out. But the woman at hotel we were staying at nearby said the food was really good, so we stayed. I had the seafood pealla, my wife had a grouper imperial dish and my daughter the admiral’s choice. The admiral’s choice had a ½ lobster split down the entire length. But there was no claw and the lobster tasted horrible. It was not fresh, borderline spoiled. We told our waitress, who I’d give a 1 star for service,

If you are looking for very fresh seafood at a reasonable price, you have found it. Captain’s Tavern is consistently good. Corkage fee is $ 16 if you want to bring your own wine. Most of the fish entrees come with salad and a side(rice, baked potato, or French fries). The crab-stuffed mushrooms appetizer is great. The house salad is made with iceberg lettuce, which I don’t usually like, but the house vinaigrette is out of sight and makes it great. Choose your fish and a sauce. We have not been disappointed by the fish — it is very good. The fries are also surprisingly good. Overall, a great choice!

Been dining there for the last 25 years and it still does not disappoint. Had the every Tuesday 2 for 1 lobster diner which has been an institutional practice for the last 28 years. The price is right, the service is fast and the staff is attentive. Only knock is the interior hasn’t changed much in that time. Fortunately I enjoy the saltwater fish tanks found in abundance throughout the restaurant.

The worst lunch and waist of money ever. Never expected that the Mahi Mahi(Dolphin) was spoiled/rotten. The taste was the worst I had ever experienced and it had a bad smell. According to the chef the reason for the funny smell and the weird taste was because I had ordered it grilled and not broiled. I am a dinner and I do not eat meat, therefore, I know when a fish is spoiled, not fresh and smelly. After so many years of going to this restaurant, I have wrote it off. I will NEVER recommend it to anyone else. They should be ashamed of themselves. Putting their waiters through serving BAD fish. Summary: Worst lunch ever. Ordered Mahi Mahi(dolphin) and it was spoiled, smelly and uneatable. According to the Chef the reason for the horrible taste, disgusting smell and weird texture was because it was ordered grilled and it gave all of this characteristics mentioned above. His message to me was that next time the way to ordered this fish was broiled. Please!!! I am a dinner, eat no meat and know my fish. It is an insult to my intelligence this attitude, furthermore, he and the restaurant should be ashamed of themselves. It is so sad how such a great restaurant that I have gone for years has become this way. If someone wants to eat fresh fish, do not go to this restaurant. It serves bad fish.

Very disappointing lunch, the waiter must have been new? The monk fish was not grilled, as originally explained, but breaded, when the order was changed to grilled grouper with a lemon butter sauce, waiter comes back to apologize there was a surcharge for the lemon butter, ok. The crusted snapper came with rice or scalloped potatoes, getting steamed broccoli instead, of course, carried a surcharge, ok. The snapper was so spicy and garlicky I could not eat it, the two pieces of broccoli were not worth the surcharge and all those«surcharges» really hiked up the bill at the end! Good old Captain’s Tavern is just not that good anymore, don’t think even the good old memories will bring me back there :(

Usually I give this place a 5 star but tonight the service was not up to par. The food is always delish and their selection of wine outstanding. Best kept secret in Miami. We come minimal once a week! I have yet to find a dish I didnt love. Family friendly my kids grew up watching the beautiful fish in the tanks, now my grandkids ask to come here! Great lounge area with very nice bartenders

We love this place. Our boss loves to bring us all here every trip. This is where my love for Oysters Rockefeller began. I had never tasted anything like them and since then, life has never been the same… Lol. I have tried them in a lot of different cities but this place does it the best! The perfect amount of spinach and fried cheese, not over powering and the lime and sauce… zest…OHEMGEE, flavors just burst in your mouth… love love love!

I thought that I had reviewed this place before but the review is gone, even though the pictures are still here. Anyhow, I love supporting Mom & Pop businesses and that’s what this restaurant is. It’s always crowded too! The lobster Thermidor is yummy and any of the seafood that you order is guaranteed to be fresh! They have 2 for 1 Maine lobsters on Tuesdays. Today I had the lobster chunk appetizer and the JB roll. The lobster chunks were more like lobster bits but it was tasty. I didn’t like the breading on the JB roll. It was breadcrumbs not tempura batter so it was crunchy but not light. Hubby had the stuffed dolphin with a baked potato, which were both really good. A solid 3 stars.

After my last and final visit. This is what I wrote to the owner. To whom it may concern:(hopefully the owner) I moved down here 18 months ago from New York. I found your spot on Unilocal.Decent reviews. I was not expecting The Palm. But hoping it to be as good as a great old fish joint, Gus’s in Harrison NY would have been fine. But after several visits to the tavern I’m done trying. Our first visit back in November ’13 was«eh» at best. First off u keep it so cold inside its like u could keep the fish«out» for days and it would not spoil.(No worries. I would not judge a restaurant on air temp. I just brought a sweater the following times) We had some kind of fish that was ok. But the side dishes are an embarrassment. I consider myself kind of an expert on French fries.(Being modest) so when I order them they should be the best thing I’m eating. Yours don’t have a chance. I knew right away they come from a bag. It is to easy to make a great French fry. Double fry them and use fresh potatoes. I guess your«regulars» are use to it. Or don’t know better. We find out u have prime rib specials on Thursday nites. So a few weeks later we come on a Thursday. I’m ok with a 20 min wait. We sit down to find out your sold out of prime rib. Really? It’s only 8:30 and management Under ordered? So we ate some fish with bad rice this time. Several weeks later we come back for lobster nite and that was a decent meal. Still the fries and sweet potato fries are terrible. So for the following visits I stick to your lobsters. Figure u can’t get that wrong. Several weeks later we show up for prime rib. This time u have enough for us to order it. U know the old saying. When in Rome… In your case I should stick to the fish. Bad prime rib. And again the fries are not good. Stopped by about a month-six weeks ago. Ordered the large lobster tail. Half was over cooked. Inside was under cooked. Really? For a $ 50 tail this is what I get??? But tonite ended our relationship. We show up at around 8:00 for lobster nite. Wait 20 mins. Sit down. I have my sweater on. Order the lobster special and king crab legs. Ten mins later the waiter comes out and informs us u r out of lobster. Really?(Yes again with REALLY). On your special lobster nite u don’t over order to have enough for the customers. It’s not like they would go bad swimming in the tank for a day or two. I had the king crab legs. Two were over cooked. The other three were fine. My wife had the Florida tail. Outside was tough and inside was fine. We did not order it with fires. Fries from a frozen bag is an embarrassment. U have been around for years. I suspect u will be around for many more years. Except this transplant New Yorker will not be a patron ever again. Ps. The warm rolls are the best items on the menu. Best wishes,
Nahir D.

Don’t dine here! I’ve been trying to reach the owner Dale Palomino about my terrible experience at his restaurant last month(previous review). Unfortunately he is out of reach and seems to care very little for costumer satisfaction which vividly reflects on his staff! Maybe this restaurant has been around for 40 years but it seems according to the reviews here and elsewhere that the quality of food and customer service has significantly declined in the last 5 years.

Good seafood restaurant across from Dadeland mall. This place has been around for over 40 years serving seafood to the Miami. This place is definitely a destination for senors. The décor is like a fishing boat motif with fish tanks all over the restaurant. With a small bar to the right of the entrance with a tv. The place has a good amount of tables inside. No outdoor seating. I have had the lobster bisque, conch fritters, oyster rockerfella, house salad, and calamari Thai salad for a appetizer. For the main course I have had the fried jumbo shrimp, tuna balsamico, 2lb. lobster, and the admirals platter. The lobster bisque is good and so was the conch fritters. The tuna balsamico I have had it rare with the Wasabi mashed potatoes and fried jumbo shrimps are good as well. For dessert I have had the Key lime pie and it was tasty. The staff is friendly.

Went on a Tuesday night and the place was booming! We had the lobster special, it was great, gosh, I wish I was eating it right now! The décor is older, lots of fish tanks, I counted about 6. It is very ‘fisherman-esque’ style. The good part was that there were so many older patrons, which is always a good sign in my book since they know where to eat at great local spots! Can’t wait to go again and try other seafood! My mouth is watering right now! Kudos to the waitress a lady from Thailand that was so sweet and attentive!
