Mrs. Moore’s Bakery

It was a beautiful sunny day and while driving through the infamous neighborhood if Overtown, I spotted Moore’s Grocery and BAKERY sign, complete with an outline of a muffin on the door. Figuring why not give this place a try, I stopped and stepped inside.
From what I could see, there was one woman running the place, and some of display cases were empty — when I inquired about the baked items, she pointed to pies and cakes. While the options were limited, she also mentioned that they cook on-​site, including southern fish fry — but they do not seem to have menus printed out yet. But because I stopped for the bakery, I picked up the two slices — one of pumpkin pie and the other of vanilla sponge cake.
Trying them, I thought the pumpkin pie was a bit on the sweet side whereas the vanilla sponge cake was just perfect. She also warmed up the cake slice too — which I have never seen before — but also this cake wasn’t like any other I have had since it was spongey that it made me think it was done Caribbean style. It was delicious that I did eat it all. The slices themselves were $ 2.50 each and I left happy leaving knowing that I supported a local business that cares about the community.
As for the name of the business, it felt more like a convenience store instead of a grocery store, as they only had one or two aisle filled with food products. And then they had a large table with chairs for people who wants to eat in. And much of the remaining space, while clean and organized, seem to be under plans of being further utilized.
I came in and left the space feeling comfortable with the customer service and space. So far, a good experience but I will need to come back to explore more options to better rate this place.
PRO: affordable, comfortable, hot options and sweet options, friendly service
CON: currently limited in food options, location in Overtown seems to be sketchy outside of daylight hours.
