Since I haven’t been out to the Gables much — I was excited I actually got to have a nice little tour(mind you out of breath and sweating, minor details). The race was well organized and my favorite part was hearing my name as I crossed the finish line! This was my 2nd5k and the swag at my first(SoBe fit) were MUCH cooler — EVERYONE got a medal, souvenir water bottle, bag, etc. The spectators were great(minus the man who pointed out to his son as I’m hovering over the finish line trash can, «this is what happens when you push yourself too hard.») It was really so great to see familiar faces of fellow Unilocalers at the end — that probably topped it off for me! :)

What can I say except I heart Tour of the Gables? There was nothing about this race I didn’t love. Fellow Unilocalers, good-old-fashioned heart pumping exercise, sunshine & scenic views … it was a blast. Not gonna lie — it was my first 5k, and I was hurting a little as the sun beat down. I’m not exactly speedy Gonzales, but it didn’t matter, everyone was there to support me regardless, and I’m proud of myself for doing it. There are some FAST ppl in these races — like, damn. I think the winner was a 17 yo kid who ran a 5. something mile. Crrraaazy. But Unilocalers didn’t do so shabby themselves! There’s a definite camaraderie about a race like this, and I know I’m in for more. I definitely need to up my distance and increase my speed, but hell, practice makes perfect! I was so proud of each and every one of us. Go team Unilocal! So glad I did this. So glad we had such a great group. Short though it was, definitely one of the highlights of my 2010 so far. :)

Being a spectator at most events, I get to observe what goes on backstage while the racers are out pumping out an amazing race. Tour of the Gables is a very well organized race where all of the volunteers are helping out not only efficiently but with a huge smile on their faces. The course itself(I have run it in the past) is beautiful and if you aren’t up to running you can come out and walk it and have a good time. Great race for spectators and runners alike!

In the Historic City of Coral Gables, this event just reached its 15th year. a 5 Kilometer course around the scenic Granada Golf Course, with the start and finish in front of Coral Gables City Hall, the race is well organized, with great support and festivities. For those running it, there is of course the great feeling of accomplishment that comes when you follow through all the way to the finish line. Regardless of finishing time or placing, to wake up early on a Saturday morning and line up in the starting line with fellow runners from all levels, ages and categories, and running around the Golf Course while simply giving the best you can will certainly earn you a few points with that reflection on the mirror. We came and celebrated our individual and collective accomplishments, we cheered for each other and supported and contributed to our efforts. It was really motivating to see that last person cross the finish line, long after we had all finished and right before they took everything down, the cheers of the crowd were evidence as to why we were all here, just to have good time and watch some great human stories unfold, those we carry we with us and make everyday special. And for those coming to support, the race is intimate, inviting and comfortable, and their presence makes the event even more special for us, because of their unselfish actions of coming out to the finish line to cheer for friends and strangers because the efforts all tell a story, and they deserve to be recognized and encouraged. Ample parking, easy to get to, this is one of those that must be done every year, just because you can.
