Amazing mocha latte. Very delicious raspberry croissant. Quick with my order. Not too far from 89. Wish they had a better designed parking lot. Quiet and friendly aura.

It’s Whoopie Pie season! Why does it have to be a season? Why not a year around staple? The Whoopie Pie has a nice cake texture, but not super sweet. Tastes like dark chocolate cake, with a lightly sweet cream filling. It’s definitely not marshmallow fluff. I love this place, but I got the skimpiest ham & cheese croissant today — see pic.

I’m looking forward to returning to Vermont ASAP. One of my destinations is always the Red Hen. The fresh bread and soups are always excellent, and it’s a fun experience to have a meal there. Vermont is lucky to have the Red Hen!!!

Thank you again, Unilocalers. I have no idea how else we would have ever stumbled upon this off-the-beaten path operational bakery and café. The patch of sunflowers and electric car charging stations kicked things off on the right foot and the party continued inside with the big display window showcasing the bakers in action. I should also add that this is a mini gourmet food store with wine, cheese, beer, ice cream, syrups and more. I thoroughly enjoyed my jasmine tea(the real kind with flower buds) and scones(lemon currant and maple). The maple icing on top was addictive. The menu board also showed off their healthier lunch options like spinach soup and golden beet salad. Wifi was fast and cooperative. Highly recommend! **Now, if only I could throw a baking party in that back room…

I love the food but it is a frustrating customer experience to say the least. Just had my third visit that required nearly 20 min to serve up two to-go panini — all of which are pre-made the morning ahead(including condiments) and so can’t be altered to preference. Knowing that it’s often mind-bogglingly slow, we called our order in ahead. Except of course we didn’t, because we were told they«don’t do phone orders». Given the promise of a tasty, real-food lunch right off the highway and their difficulty managing order flow, I’m not sure why they aren’t begging customers to call in ahead.

A bakery that serves breakfast and lunch. The bread is wonderful and fresh. Alas, I am told this because there are no gluten free options. For lunch I couldn’t partake in the wonderful looking sandwiches, but settled for some gigande beans in a vinaigrette marinade(delicious) and a cup of creamy lentil soup. No complaints here. They also have wine, coffee, maple syrup and spreads for sale in addition to the bakery items.

Went in today for lunch thinking I might get a scone or a some kind of a sweet roll. It surprised me greatly to find that there were none left it’s the first time I’ve gone in store at lunchtime when there really were no baked goods available. So instead I decided to get a small soup to go and was amazed at how small the quantity of soup I got for five dollars. Somewhat disappointed in my visit.

The café has a very nice atmosphere, relaxed and quiet. GREAT soups… i have loved every one i have tried… pea soup, chicken with wild rice,… EURO style breads are also very good, and luckily they are widely distributed in Vermont. We need a REDHEN café in every town in Vermont. But in the meanwhile, thanks for being there in Middlesex.

Excellent Almond Croissants and very good everything else. They run out of Almond Croissants a lot and the seating can be a little limited but the staff is always friendly and the product is consistent – I’ve been here countless times. My advice to Red Hen: make more Almond Croissants! And enforce the no shirts, no shoes, no service rule, ya hippies!

Red Hen baguettes should be purchased by the armfuls! Best sticky buns in Vermont! Always something unique. The fig and anise rolls are delicious. Atmosphere is small town. Great stop off of I-89 for a quick, VT fresh pastry or sandwich.

By far, the best coffee place around. The bread and pastries are of really high quality, the staff is very nice and helpful. If you have children would really appreciate the books and games they have. I’ve visited the red hen almost every sunday since I moved to Montpelier and have a pleasant experience every time! I take home my bread for the week, waitsfield common and mad river grain are my favorites.

Had the Ham It Up breakfast sandwich and it was ok. Eggs were a little cold in the middle but the bread was very good. Also tried their organic chocolate milk and it wasn’t that good… very limited selection and I’m not sure why the reviews were so high…

I first tried their food at a farmer’s market in Waitsfield, VT. I had their peach galette and was floored by it. I checked out their restaurant for breakfast and had a great experience there. It’s a homey café with amazing food. There’s a cozy seating area in the corner with rocking chairs and a grand piano.

I was actually excited to try this place since I had just moved right up the road. I ordered some chocolate croissants and various other things. I received and eye roll from the cashier as I pulled out my debit card to pay and then I noticed a sign saying they preferred cash. So sorry. I thought I was at a place of business. I noticed the rest of the staff was unfriendly with other customers as well. I quickly made up my mind to never return and I said, «Thank you» and left. The items I purchased were not that great. If I can make things better at home, there is no reason to go to a place that does not impress me. Will not be returning.

This little valley ~ the MRV~ is a hella kick in the breeches! Paid for full tank so I must return it on «E» … Searching for Montpelier Mud but closed on Monday so stopped in this café. Authentic pain au chocolate and lusty dark roast decaf. Wifi, couches, a wine section, café tables … A bit too chilly to sit in front on their picnic tables… A must visit for the VT vibe.

3 words: Bacon Cheddar Scone. I really don’t think I need to go any farther than that, but I will. They have a variety of treats, and sandwiches available, and I’ve yet to have something I haven’t enjoyed. their breads are fantastic, and they have all sorts of goodies available in the store. I work in the area so I frequent here during the week. I find it hard not to get one of those scones every time I’m there!

Charming. It was super charming and«cute» and«rural.» Not the greatest place ever but nice. The proprietors are definitely making an effort. I actually feel bad that I am not giving them more stars now that I think of it… but I wasn’t blown away by anything… and quite frankly the«local products» that they sell are a tad overpriced… very close to «tourist» pricing for. I find you can get a lot of the«locally made» cheeses, condiments and what-nots at the local grocery stores at lower prices(I spied a few items in their shop that I’ve seen at the local co-op in Montpelier at better prices). This place has breads, pastries and some prepared food(soups, salads, sandwiches). The soup is actually reasonably priced and a good value for lunch — generous portion of soup and large hunk of bread! We were there around 1:00pm on a Saturday and they had already run out of a lot of their soup and pastries… kind of a bummer but I’m not really sure how late people here like to do «weekend brunch/lunch.» To me 1pm on a weekend was a bit early to calling it quits on your item availability. There was a gentleman performing live music. Nice touch. But it was a bit awkward since it was pretty quiet and there wasn’t much of a crowd. Pros: Soup, freshly baked bread, local ingredients, clean bathrooms, near some other interesting shops(a chocolate shop, thrift store, art gallery), live music. Cons: Quiet atmosphere makes for awkward moments when people are not really that into the music being performed, they seem to run out of food kind of early. To be honest, I probably would not go out of my way to come here again. If we happen to be in the area and have time or need to eat something, its an option…

I always have great confidence in any bakery or restaurant which allows you to watch how they prepare their food. At Red Hen, they do exactly that. You can tell that take pride in what they make, and rightfully so. This cool bakery makes delicious bread, pastries and other baked goods. We ordered a delicious Cyrus Pringle, a delicious wheat bread named after a dead dude who was a wheat botanist, to go with the next day’s breakfast. To satisfy my immediate craving I ordered a nice cayenne brownie with a maple latte. Both were fantastic. Additionally, there is a find selection of micro brews and artisan cheeses sold here as well. Come here for good pastries, breads and coffee!
