Stones fields and beech Albro Woods is a small hiking area that wanders along some cool stone walls and into lots of very large and ancient beech trees. The entire hike is only about a mile or so but if you walk a bit down Mitchell’s Lane you can connect to other hiking trails. Many of the stone walls look a bit different than the usual walls in New England and are made mostly of smaller rocks, many that look like they were shaped and smoothed by water. Perhaps these rocks were brought here by the ocean instead of glacier activity. Another interesting thing about these woods are the large number of beech trees. Some really big ones that look like they have survived a few winters. A few are even bent and twisted as if a hurricane or nor’easter really did a job on them. This isn’t a large area for a hike but it does have some unique features that makes it interesting. A pleasant little walk that can be part of a much longer hike if you do the other trails in the area.
