Shape Fitness

Obviously I come here… a lot lol. I take at least three, maybe four classes here a week. The last-​minute class cancellations and teachers just deciding to not show up are the worst! It always happens… Might change gyms if it continues (just happened today).
As mentioned in previous posts, I love Carolyn’ s classes as they’re challenging and never dull. Home girl studied this in college and knows her stuff. Another shout out I need to give is Matt and his boxing/​MMA class. Rarely does he ever cancel a class and teaches some great stuff. There aren’t too many ladies there, but the boys don’t bite ;)
The front desk staff is super nice and I love the new group activity room renovation. I don’t run at this location or use the weights so can’t really speak on that.

Horrible customer service! I signed an annual contract in September 2011 that I thought ws set to end in September 2012. In September 2012 they did an ACH payment to my account and there were not enough funds (because my contract was set to be over). They continued to pull an ACH payment from my account for October, November and December. Once I realized this I contacted them and they told me even though my contract was up I had to tell them to discontinue my service. I then stated that my security badge to enter the gym would not work past September. They informed me this was because the check was returned in September. If the check was returned in September and my badge no longer works, THEN QUIT TAKING THE MONEY OUT OF MY ACCOUNT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR!

This gym has horrible customer service and their contract terms are even worse. Do not go there.

MEMBERSHIP EXPERIENCE
I have been a member of this Shape Fitness location for two years because of a locked in 2-​year contract and I can say in my experience this place has nothing it should hang it’s hat on. Though there is some friendly staff, I have been coming for two years and not once has a staff member or employee ever gotten to know me, asked me how my exercises are going, asked me to review their service, asked me what could be improved, or cared enough to thank me for being a member (I did have many, many choices after all). They seem to have no one that cares about marketing because in the Web 2.0 days of social technologies and digital marketing, they have never attempted any sort of client engagement online, sent me health or exercise tips, or even offered a discount to renew my contract with them (I will not when my contract expires this month). They do not even maintain a consistent Facebook page or Twitter account and they seem to be very stuck in the dark ages on this. They are instead very sales-​oriented and will do anything to make another buck. Examples of this are as follows: no towels and not even any water cooler or paper cups for tap water BUT they put in a vending machine, offer a full line of tanning supplies and energy supplements, and created space for a Herbalife shake and drink bar that is never busy or has a line.
FACILITY
The facility is in an old grocery story building that they have been trying to renovate and though there have been some improvements, much remains to be seen. The place is poorly ventilated for starters and if it weren’t for multiple industrial-​size floor fans, it would be even worse. In the men’s locker rooms, the locker cabinets are frequently broken or falling off hinges, the carpets are dirty, and there is a floor ventilation tower plugged in near the sinks (and water) that is just begging to electrocute someone. There are rickety benches in the men’s locker room and no chairs on the equipment floor.
EQUIPMENT
There is a decent selection of equipment but there is almost always something broken on the treadmills and nothing is rapidly repaired (video screens). There are tanning beds and two racquetball courts but no pool and no real running track or loop. Very few pieces of equipment appear even close to new and most machines obviously aren’t.
