Brighter Outlook Painting

The owner of this painting business did not give me an estimate when I asked him to, saying, «we just do time and materials.» He was a friend of my contractor. I have worked on this basis (time and materials) with other painters and subcontractors who were friends of my contractor, and their final charges were reasonable. At the end of the job, the owner of Brighter Outlook gave me a bill that was about 4 times more expensive than it should have been, based on the square footage and detailing — in comparison with how much I have paid for other jobs.
He also charged me for 2 hours per day of his own time, even though he had never lifted a paintbrush. I had given him the paint color name, brand, and color number, and the paint store is near my house, so he couldn’t have spent any significant time buying the paint.
In addition, his workmen took an expensive large Vornado fan of mine without asking me and ruined it — dust was pulled into every part of the fan, including the mechanism, when they used it while they were sanding. The owner then attempted to clean it (of course, not the important part, the ruined mechanism), and probably thought he was charging me for the time it took him to clean it.
There is more that I could say about the owner of this expensive rip-​off operation, but I prefer not to make personal remarks in a public forum.
