My daughter has now been participating in Mathnasium for over a year. She has not lost her enthusiasm for going to Mathasium. All the instructors are extremely nice, helpful and engaging. Her grades and confidence with math has excelled and she is consistently one of the top math students.

We love Mathnasium! My daughter started one year ago when she was in second grade. She took the initial assessment and we learned that she still needed to master some concepts from first grade. One year later and she is now working on 4^th grade math. She loves Scott and all the instructors and has a sincere love of math. Her sister who is in first grade started recently, primarily because my other daughter enjoyed Mathnasium so much. There are lots of incentives in terms of prizes that kids can buy based on completing the work. We highly recommend Mathnasium!

My daughter has struggled with the implementation of common core math, which seems to quickly move from concept to concept regardless of actual comprehension or mastery. This in conjunction with an awful 3^rd grade classroom experience left my daughter at a significant disadvantage and completely disengaged in math. She still has a lot of work to do, but her attitude has changed drastically and she is moving in the right direction. The remedial work and prize structure that Mathnasium offers has her excited to learn :)

Mathnasium has made our son so much more competent and confident in his Math skills. We remember when he would sit there almost frozen with fear and frustration at not being able to do his Math homework. We love Mathnasium! We feel like we have given our 7 yr old daughter a true leg up in school. Our daughter was actually getting fine grades for math in first grade but was complaining that is was hard to hear the teacher because it was so noisy in the classroom. She felt like she was missing part of what was being taught in math. So, we tried to find a way to help her. In researching math tutors, we stumbled across Mathnasium and the reviews were all so good we had to come check it out. Like everyone else says, Scott is so nice and seems to know all the kids. They have great prizes for not only completing worksheets but also for bringing in 100% on a school test, and getting a 90% above on the assessments (I think you also get your picture on the wall if you do that). I don’t have to fight her to go and actually, she has talked two of her other friends to sign up. It’s their little club and we moms share in trying to take them down so they all get at least a couple of hours a week. There is also a Starbucks next door and a beauty salon. Scott has been very generous in giving out rewards and flexible with extending deadlines. It’s really nice to have such great customer service these days. So, does it work? Yes! Over the summer her first grade assessment went from 45% to 70% and she hasn’t even made it through all the curriculum. She started second grade fired up and asked me if she’d be the best in her class at math. We’ll see but she might be as I know that Mathnasium’s first grade curriculum covers more than her first grade class did at Neil Cummins. I could write more really but suffice it to say, after our summer special we happily signed up for the year. Our daughter went from feeling adequate to now feeling like she’s one of the smartest in her class. This is such a gift you can give to your child.

Can’t thank Scott and his team enough for all the encouragement and kindness my daughter has received over the 2 years she has been tutored here. Thanks to their positive attitude and continuous commitment to making learning math fun and easy my daughter has graduated 8^th grade math even with a major learning disability (dyscalculia). They had an uphill struggle as she started 2 years below grade level when she started at Mathnasium, even though she had been having 2 hrs per week with a regular private math tutor since 4^th grade. Clearly their method works, where many others fail. Lastly, and so important, my daughter actually enjoyed her 3 hours a week and always went in, and came out, smiling and pleased with her progress :)

We were referred to Mathnasium by a friend after our daughter (age 8) began struggling with math at school. At the time, our daughter was seeing a private tutor once a week in addition to getting extra help at school. Nothing was working. She was near the bottom of her class and becoming extremely anxious anytime math was even discussed. Fast forward 4 months and our daughter works on math during her free time and would visit Mathasium every day if we let her. I cant say enough great things about this place. It is so exciting to see her comfortable with numbers and have solid strategies to solving math problems. The center provides a very comfortable environment with a stable group of tutors in addition to the owner (Scott) engaged every step of the way. My daughter loves the way they greet her by name when she walks in. Big thanks to Scott and the team at Mathnasium for teaching my daughter to love math!!!

We registered both our kids 3 – 4 months ago and have been very pleased. They (5^th and 6^th graders) both actually enjoy going which I thought would be a hurdle and am greatly relieved that it’s not. There is a prize incentive system which works great for kids — and as far as I’m concerned anything that will generate enthusiasm to get them there and to work through their binders of worksheets is fine with me. Yes, I’m sure I could try to work through various workbooks with them on my own at home… and yes, I could certainly attempt to offer some similar incentive system… but the fact of life (at least in my household) is that they react better to tutoring assistance/​mentoring from others than to me. They needed more work in math and this is getting the job done.
I have already seen improvement in both of them amidst their regular school math classes and am grateful for a summer schedule which allows us to keep at it here during the break and be in good shape to return to school in the Fall!
There are a variety of instructors/​tutors on hand — all have been good — Trevor, Asher, Eric and Jeremy have become familiar names to my kids and have been fun, patient and helpful. The instructors each have a table which can seat up to 6 kids — some days/​times are quite quiet with a lot of one on one attention (or close to it) and others are busier with a full table of kids independently working on their personal work binders with assist as needed — but there always seems to be a good energy in the place and the bottom line to me is that my kids are doing math with some degree of enthusiasm, augmenting their school studies, filling in the blanks and gaining confidence in this subject overall. What’s not to like?
The ONLY thing I can complain about this place is the location — I find it tough to get in and out with the heavy traffic around the Tam Junction area, the small parking lot is often jammed (particularly as some people opt to wait for their kids) and it just is not a very pleasant area to «hang out» (taking a walk around there is depressing) at with the possible exception of a busy Starbucks.

I was more impressed by their business model than the offered service. My going-​in-​to 7^th grader spent 60+ minutes taking the recommended 4^th grade assessment (it was explained because that’s when students who struggle in Math typically start to miss key concepts, with which I agree) and my child placed pretty bleakly. She told me there were topics on it that weren’t even covered in 6^th grade. Although I do believe she needs a better understanding of Math going into the next grade, I suspect Mathnasium’s assessments are brilliantly written to show a need for the service they provide, regardless of how the child is really doing at their grade level. I appreciate that I was emailed with topic specific results, so that we could see exactly where she struggled.
There are (brilliantly as well) shelves and cabinets lining the walls with prizes in a wide range in value, from trinkets and candy to gift cards and electronics. I saw a ball cap that still had a Ross dress for less price tag on it, which gave me the idea I can go buy my kids our own discount rewards.
The plan that I was proposed was for my child to go in and work out of a workbook (self-​taught) with a small group instructor available if help is needed. Summer programs are $ 799 for 20 hours ($ 40/​hr) or $ 499 for 10 hours ($ 50/​hr), which may be a fair fee for a tutor who teaches a child one-​on-​one, but IMO high for group supervision while the student goes through a math workbook independently. I was also quoted a $ 1,200 six month fee for unlimited drop in visits.
Instead of paying Mathnasium $ 1,200, I spent $ 11 on Amazon’s highest rated Math workbook (McGraw Hill). My child is working on it at home (she felt the Mathnasium environment was distracting), she designed her own reward system (for consistency, attitude, and tests), and I buy her prizes that she picks out herself (gift cards, bowling, dinner out with friends, etc.). If our plan fails and more help is needed, I have a feeling Mathnasium will still be around, but I also have a feeling she’ll do just fine.

Mathnasium has been incredibly helpful in building my son’s confidence in Math. That confidence has expanded into other subjects at school. We have been really pleased with the experience. I highly recommend Mathnasium.

I am thankful that the Mathnasium method, the fantastic tutors, and owner, Scott, came to Mill Valley. We enrolled our son three months ago, and I am surprised and extraordinarily pleased that our son is already experiencing results from the program. As a second grader, we discovered he had gaps in his first grade education. We came to Mathnasium hoping to strengthen his fundamental understanding of basic math principles and become great at math. It is working! To date we have noticed an increase in his overall math confidence, especially at homework time. Our son enjoys the positive and enjoyable learning environment, and has told me that he feels like he can finally understand certain things because of the way the teachers explain things.
Our son recently tried the monthly drop-​in chess event for the first time and absolutely loved it! His teachers were very patient showing him the game pieces and explaining entry level strategy. Last, I greatly appreciate the flexible drop-​in schedule including Saturdays and Sundays (yay!) and how patient Scott is answering my questions. Thank you!

My 8 year old has been struggling in school in math but this has definitely helped her in just a few months. I definitely recommend them!

My 11 yo has been attending Mathanesium for the past 8 months. His level of Math went from below average to above average. Moreover Math become his favorite subject. He loves it and he is having lots of fun with it! Scott, Jeremy and all the the tutors are very professional and they have created a friendly and wonderful climate in their classes. I can’t say enough great things about Mathnasium! My daughter is in third grade and was behind in math. In less than a year she caught up almost two grade levels! She went from dreading math to loving it. One of the cool parts of Mathnasium is the sub-​culture there. There is structure and order but lots of fun while learning. There are rewards and confidence-​boosting side activities that you just don’t get tutoring at home or one-​on-​one. And the cost and flexible drop-​in times fit our budget and busy schedules. And the tutors… wow! They are the backbone supporting the kid’s success. Scott, the director, is personable and so dedicated and it shows in the vibe as soon as you walk in the door. When my daughter says, «Mom, can I stay another hour, pleeeeaaassseee?» How can you beat that?!

Not a big Unilocal reviewer but mathnasium of mill valley deserves one… here’s why… my daughter who is currently in 3^rd grade has struggled with math concepts since kindergarten… even with a finance degree, I clearly am not a teacher!!! my daughter easily caught on to my frustration level when I «helped» her and this only made things worse. Her confidence was hurt and her degree of intimidation by math grew rapidly.
Her initial assessment showed her to be nearly 2 grades behind. After 5 months her level of improvement has been tremendous. Mathnasium teaches in a way that makes math fun and approachable. You can tell how successful their methods are by the number of students I see every time I drop my daughter off. My daughter has NOT complained ONCE about going to Mathnasium and I take her right after school. She also likes the fact that she is learning things at Mathnasium that her school has not even started to cover. Bottom line — it’s clear that Scott and his tutoring staff (Kevin, Treavor, etc…) do a great job with students having trouble with math. This parent is impressed and grateful!!!

We started Mathnasium this last summer. My daughter, a 7^th grader, just received her first A in Math after struggling for years. Mathnasium’s approach to learning math step by step, rather than simple homework review, has been very effective for her longterm understanding of math.
The owner, Scott, is very patient and kind. He seems to love his job and provides lots of extra opportunities for kids to engage in math-​related activities and see math as fun. He is also a big donor to local school organizations, including Kiddo!, which is so appreciated. Mathnasium is a real asset to the community and a very effective program to get your kid to excel at math.

My son was struggling with math and I was desperate to find a solution that did not involve him yelling at me any more. In my search for some sort of math tutor, we discovered Mathnasium. To my delight, my son has gone from hating math to LOVING math – and it happened literally in his first session, following his assessment.
The approach is simple – just like you go to a gymnasium for physical fitness, kids go to Mathnasium for mental fitness (or finessing their math skills). The learning plan is customized based on a student’s initial assessment. Every kid basically starts where they are and they grow from there.
Even more important to me than my son learning to love math, is the impact Mathnasium has had on his self-​confidence. We started the program in early August and in September he tested and was reassigned to a faster paced math group in school. His grades are improving not only in math, but other areas as well. His math teacher at school has indicated that he is maturing nicely in the classroom and that he is exhibiting more leadership skills.
I now have both of my kids in Mathnasium. My son loved it so much that my daughter wanted to join the program as well. She is expanding her math skills to a level above her actual grade level and is enjoying every minute of it.
Scott Rubin, the owner, is great with the kids. He makes math fun – turning dice and cards into math games my kids look forward to playing – particularly when we do weekend sessions.
Another plus is that it’s an extremely flexible program, so my kids are able to pick the days they want to attend and then choose the math instructor they want to work with when they arrive. There are always plenty of instructors on hand and my kids have indicated that they pretty much like all of them, although I think some have become favorites.
We are now in our sixth month and I see no sign of my kids wanting to stop. Which is just fine by me. It’s been well worth our investment.

I first discovered Mathnasium when we lived in Guam in 2012. We just moved back to Marin in August, and, my son needed to continue his tutoring, and we are so excited about Mathnasium. My son learns best with visual and tactile style. Mathnasium teaches to all different learning styles. Mathnasium Mill Valley and Scott Rubin is even better, and, my son really loves it, and his grades are going up. He was feeling like Math would never come easy to him. While it’s still a journey, Scott and his team is really helping him with the fundamentals which he never really learned well. He went from a D– to a C+ last semester, and, he’s set a goal for a B by the end of the year. He’s on his way with the help and support of Mathnasium. Thank you.
