If you like sake and just want to hang out and waste time-this is the place for you. If you like waiting for your food for over 45 min(we ordered five rolls)-this is the place for you. If you are okay with your toddler sitting on your lap as you eat because they don’t have high chairs-then this is the place for you. If you get excited about going to a small restaurant with every table(including bar) designated«reserved», but nobody waiting at the door or sitting in the restaurant-this is the place for you. If you like to tell the waitress what basic items to bring you(I.e., water, plates, etc)-this is the place for you. If you like spending a lot of money for poor service and mediocre food-this is the place for you. If you like spending over $ 60 for sushi and then get a «to go» pasta and salad from pomodero because you are still hungry-this is the place for you.

Wow… would never expect anything this good along the arterial in J’town. Our table had pork chops, chicken pasta, duck and white clam pasta… Everybody was very happy. Homemade desserts were outstanding and the price was reasonable for what you got. Portions were big and we all left with to-go boxes.

Came for lunch and was very disappointed. Service was very slow — ordered 3 rolls and it took over 25 minutes until we got our food despite there being only 1 other table occupied. Also ordered a 49er roll and it came without ingredients that were listed in the menu. When we questioned the waitress she said that other customers didn’t like the ingredient so they no longer put it in the roll(it was still on the menu and we specifically ordered it for the shiso leaf that now wasn’t included). The roll also had an insane amount of rice — I usually trust the sushi chef to know best but we picked the roll apart to avoid the insane amount of rice. So expensive for what we got — can’t believe 3 rolls with poor service and inconsistent food results cost over 50 $. Won’t be coming again. Side note: no public restroom, small slightly annoying disappointment.

Decent sushi but crap service. Also there are very few options for kids if you’re coming here as a family. Probably not worth coming if you can go to sushi ran or amberjack instead

This place is a mystery. A couple of years ago I ate here and had a delicious49er roll. Tiny restaurant, almost empty. A year later I went in to place an order to go. No one there except a rude hostess who told me it was too long of a wait! I stayed away, then another year later tried again it is very convenient, as I live in Strawberry. I said I’d like to order sushi to go. I was handed a menu, then ignored. 5 minutes later another women walked in and said she’d like to order food to go. The same waitress grumbled and said not possible. The lady said she could wait or come back later. Again the waitress grumbled some unintelligible words, but clearly was not happy. The restaurant had 2 people in it! We both gave up and walked out. Never again. This place is a joke. It has to be a front for something because they clearly don’t want customers! Very strange place

Had a terrible experience here! Super rude hostess/waitress(only one there) which makes the otherwise decent sushi not worth it.

This place is Adorable! Seriously, I want to write a children’s book about it: «The Littlest Sushi Restaurant» — by Travis G «Sushi Gourmet was a tiny sushi restaurant that lived in the Strawberry Village on the edge of town. Everyday it was picked on by the other larger sushi restaurants. But Sushi Gourmet knew that if it worked hard and believed in itself, it could become the sushi restaurant it had always dreamed to be…» Okay, I’ll finish the book later. Here’s what you need to know. The place really is tiny. There are like 4 tables and a 5 person bar. But, they do take reservations, so you can always plan ahead if you want to try this place. Despite some of the complaints I saw on Unilocal. My wife and I received exceptional service. The staff was very friendly even after we paid and were leaving the restaurant. The sushi was good, not mind blowing, but very good. It is exactly what I expect from sushi at that price point. I will definitely be back the next time I’m craving sushi. .. or selling the rights to my children’s book.

Cheap Sushi. Made from cans, imitation crab and preserved fish. The sashimi is actually served from a can. But their biggest fall: it took them 45 min’ to serve us 2 sushi rolls. The table that was sitting next to us gave up and cancelled their dishes, after waiting for over an hour. I doubt about the freshness as well. Not professional, they don’t have a clue about sushi or how to run a restaurant. Never again.

The sushi roll was very good. That’s the best thing i can say about this place. No restroom. $ 2.50 for a soda. Nothing to substitute for seaweed if you were allergic. The server was not friendly when she brought the roll for my son and I to share we didn’t get any small plates. Never could get her attention to ask her for a plate or utensils. Ate with our fingers. I’ll order to go if I give it another try.

Mediocrity. The miso was good, but the sushi was unimpressive. The crab was canned crab, and though nothing made us feel ill, nothing tasted great. And it was $ 72 for two people, so not a great value. We won’t be back — experiences like this make us miss the city! One positive note — gracious server.

I’ve been here once. Not because I want to go that once but because I cannot determine their hours to return. I’ve recommended this place to meet with friends but at 6pm they weren’t open, this has happened enough now that I don’t want to waste my time trying to eat here again. I thought the food was excellent but if they are never open, it’s impossible to return. Owners: please post your hours on your website and outside your location. It’s a very small restaurant with typical Mill Valley Sushi pricing.

The one star is for the service! I went in for lunch, the place was empty and ordered a tuna avocado roll and a a cup of green tea. Tiny cup for one dollar and no refills! Also, wasn’t served water. I was starving so after the one roll I asked for another and she looked at me in surprise, «one more»?! She took my used plate and begrudgingly got me my second roll. And guess what? My second order was served in my used plate!!! With the ginger half eaten and half used wasabi. Wouldn’t go back. Just wouldn’t.

I waited 25 minutes for two rolls that required no cooking and I was the only person in the restaurant the entire time. Need I say more?

Customer service? What customer service? Waited 20 minutes in empty restaurant to find out they had not even started making my order yet. I was the ONLY person in the restaurant. and then got attitude when I said I was leaving. Plus I have waited like this before and the fish quality was not all that great. Thanks but NO thanks. NEVER going here again.

My mom and I went to eat there for a Friday night dinner… ended up hanging around for almost three hours eating the BEST sushi we’ve ever had. Hands down, best dragon roll and best spicy tuna roll. Why you need to go: 1) AMAZING service. the husband and wife team who work there are so welcoming and kind. They remember peoples names, I felt like I was at the sushi version of Cheers. 2) Ingredients are incredibly fresh 3) Menu is not overwhelmingly large, but there is a lot to select from 4) Super clean and inviting 5) Very reasonable prices… side note: People need to stop complaining about sushi when it’s not $ 5 a roll. Get OVER it people, we’re all from Marin, so face it — everything is pricey and you can afford it. Sushi is a delicacy, you’re paying money for top quality RAW fish. If it’s such a problem, go to Safeway and get those premade boxes So to summarize: Go to Sushi Gourmet.

Since moving to the North Bay from S.F. I needed to find a good Sushi place in Marin. It was during my search that I found Sushi Gourmet. It’s pretty small so I was lucky that I went during off hours. The place is family run and I was greeted by the manager. I saw some other reviews saying that the staff could be rude. They were definitely not the warmest or friendliest bunch, but they seemed fine. I ordered three rolls. Pretty basic salmon and tuna rolls with some Salmon Nigiri. It was good and the price wasn’t too outrageous. I do not know if Sushi Gourmet will be my sushi spot in the North Bay but I will definitely give it another shot.

I agree with another reviewer, He is a Classic, «Sushi-ya San.» You come here for real Japanese Style Sushi, not rolls & not GIANT rice kind of sushi like other places-that is very American. This is how real sushi is supposed to look & taste. Perhaps, not everyone can appreciate this.

I would give Sushi Gourmet 5 starts for taste and quality, but the price and especially price and ambiance brought it down to 3 stars. I eat a lot of sushi and hadn’t been to Sushi Gourmet in many years. It was $ 85 plus tip for 2 of us and we each only had one beer. We weren’t that hungry so we didn’t even order that much. The fish was some of the freshest I’ve ever had so if price is not an issue, then it’s a great place. It’s in Strawberry and almost like a café inside and the service was very simple, but efficient.
