The food is pretty good. I’ve had a few different sandwiches and they are all pretty good. They do have Boar’s Head. Wings are good(they are mammoth pieces of meat). Pricing isn’t bad either, although they don’t take American Express. The major complaint is the speed. The service is really really really slow. If you are ordering«to go» — prepare to wait at least 20 minutes, regardless of what you order. I’m not sure what the system is, but I’ve been the only person in the restaurant a number of times, sitting around and waiting for my food by myself, and they still take 20+ minutes. Not sure why. Overall, I will definitely go again and recommend it. Just be prepared that it is going to take 20+ minutes to prepare your food. I’d recommend doing a call ahead.

I went to the Hogback today for lunch. I had a cuban sandwich. Although they definitely got the recipe correct, it only had two slices of meat on it! come on now, really are you that cheap? However, the fresh potato chips are delish! I just have some words of advice to the Hogback people… If you want this deli to stay open, you have to be consistent with your food and service and know you will not make your entire investment back until you gain steady customers(in a few years time). I would be one of those steady customers if you would put another slice of ham on my sammie… thank you!

Second outlet for the Hogback Deli(flagship in Bordentown Township) just opened a few weeks ago. Located in a strip mall on Route 33 West between Freehold and Hightstown. Been there twice — here are my comments: 1. First Visit — Grand Opening weekend — NJ101.5 was broadcasting out front. Place was an absolute zoo. They have no POS system — everything gets written down on a pad which makes ordering very slow and subject to error as the abbreviations don’t seem to be standard with the kitchen. Lots of back and forth confusion. After a longer than normal wait for a ‘to go’ sub and a cheesesteak, we were disappointed. Sub was nothing special except for its ridiculous size(ordered a ‘half’ which amounted to at least 50% more than a Subway footlong sub). The rolls are probably over twice the width of most normal sub rolls. As a result, meat, cheese, toppings and condiments don’t fill up the entire roll. Lots of bread only bites. Unfortunately, meats and cheeses aren’t anything special in terms of taste or quality. Cheesesteak wasn’t bad except that it didn’t have any cheese. Oh well — I chalked it up to grand opening kinks which would be worked out. 2. Second visit — This past weekend(couple of weeks after grand opening). Mid afternoon. 10 people inside with no wait to order. Unfortunately, no improvement in that process(still pens and pads) with this time my order taken by young girl(perhaps owner’s child). I tried to be patient as the elders walked her through the process — what to write down, how to write it, cold sub on one sheet of paper, cheesesteak on another. After taking about ten minutes to order two items(still no problem I was young once) I paid the total that was given to me. I had to wait a bit longer than most places for the cheesesteak, during that time one of the elders(who walked the kid through the process and gave her the amounts to ring up) determined that I had been undercharged by $.80. Amazingly, I was asked to pay it. If I owned a place and knew I had put a patient customer through a rather long visit, I believe I wouldn’t have mentioned the additional eighty cents but not at the Hogback. Took the food home and although the cheesesteak had cheese this time the food wasn’t noticeably better. Wife wised up and only ordered a ‘mini’ but she was disappointed again with the lack of any real quality or taste. There is a Wawa a couple of miles closer to my house. Until the Hogback gets a bit more hi-tech, better ingredients and more customer friendly, I think I’ll save the gas.
