This was the worst experience I’ve ever had at a hair salon. I cried afterwards. The way my hair looked was so embarrassing and I couldn’t imagine going out in public afterwards. I called pretty last minute and was delighted that they had an opening. I asked for some light bayalage blonde highlights. I asked my hairdresser, Julie(who is a Senior stylist and colorist), if she thought that that color would look good with my skin tone. She said of course and began to color my hair. When she took the foils off, the color was bright orange. Similar to the orange you get when you are a teenager and you try to go blonde by yourself at home. She put some toner on it for a long time and then decided it was done. Looking the the mirror I told her it looked really orange. she told me that it was just the lighting in the room. She asked for other stylist’s opinions. The other stylist, I believe it was Mellie, said to put me under the foils for longer. So this involved repainting the front section of my hair again. So when I cam out of the foils, instead of light bayalage highlights, I just had a huge bright yellow chuck on bangs. The area also just looked like my bad dye job had grown out and had lots of roots showing, not like a gradated bayalage effect. She put some toner on and left me there for a long time. The toner burned my scalp by the end, but I didn’t say anything because I knew the color needed help. Julie then proceeded to cut my hair. I told her I liked the shape, it was just getting heavy. I’m trying to grow my long pixie cut into a bob and I like have a long sweeping bang. Julie cut around the edge of my cut and that was it and proceeded to say it was done. I was trying really hard not to cry. The color was awful and I didn’t even really get a hair cut. What hair stylist doesn’t do that thing where they cut angles into your hair by picking it up to make it less heavy(I know nothing about hair, but I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about). I think Mellie realized the distress I was in a asked if she could help. She asked Julie if she cut my hair yet(like she couldn’t tell that she cut it because she really hadn’t). Mellie started going to town, the problem was that she didn’t ask what I wanted first. She chopped off my bangs area. It was so short! and the section next to my bang was long and awkward. It was just so wrong for my face and really for anyone. It was similar to a haircut you would give a woman in an assisted living facility. She proceeded to try to curl the hair to hide how bad the cut was, but it really enhanced the granny affect. So I left because it was an hour after they were supposed to close, I was there 4 hours! I cried a lot and realized that I just paid over $ 200 for the worst hair cut and color of my life. I sent an email to the contact emails listed on Mellie’s website and explained that this was just awful and I couldn’t stop crying. I asked if there were any openings as soon as possible because it was really embarrassing to go out. I didn’t think they could fix the blonde, but if someone could please just dye me back to brown. I was scared to do it myself and have it turn green or grey. No one every got back to me, it’s been weeks. It’s kind of horrifying that they just ignored me and were ok with the way I looked and the way I felt about my hair. They knew I was moving and wouldn’t be a repeat customer, so I’m sure they just didn’t care and were really happy to just get my money.

Friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Really appreciated them fitting me in as a drop in on a Saturday. Nikki but my hair and did a gray job tailoring the cut based on understanding my hair type little direction about the end product. Wash and styling included; $ 45 in about 45 minutes total. I showed up right on time and didn’t have to wait. Will definitely go back. Also, there’s free 2 hour parking very close by.

Good trim — but poor price! Why would you charge someone full price of $ 45 for a 10 minute dry trim? Seems dishonest and greedy. At least my hair came out good and she did exactly what I asked for(which should always be the case anyways) but I thought charging someone full price for literally flat ironing their hair and trimming it was obnoxious. Don’t think I’ll be going back… I normally don’t pay more than $ 25 — $ 30 tops for a bare minimum trim.

I got a cut and color by Jennifer and was really pleased. The salon is small, friendly, and achieves a nice mix of classy but laid back. I definitely had a glass of wine at 1pm on a weekday and nobody judged… that’s my kind of place! Things I liked in particular(aside from the wine) were: 1) Jennifer was really helpful and honest about my current haircut(which I wanted to change) and what would and would not look good on me. I really appreciated that, and am really happy with the direction she went. She also had good input into the color I was toying with and following her advice proved fruitful. 2) I have no interest in product or fuss or spending an hour on my hair a week, let alone a day, and while a lot of stylists I’ve seen before try to push me into using/doing lots of fancy stuff, Jennifer accepted my sloth and worked to give me a good cut that was no-maintenance. 3) They are very good about scheduling — it’s not impossible to get an appt and they tend to be quite helpful about finding you a spot that works with your schedule. This is a huge deal to me, since I’ve been to salons which handled booking like Vatican City handles booking audiences with the Pope, and I have no time for that. 4) There was a little dog there. Tiny, tiny, little dog. Dog and wine. Heaven.

Got a lousy haircut from Melanie. Best of Boston? Shocking.

A friend recommended Mellie at Mellie’s and I took the plunge. I am naturally blond, but got a very dark do in April. Over the summer and fall I have been slowly transitioning to light again, with less than average results. Mellie did not have an easy task, but I was thrilled with her solution and feel like I am natural again! Plus she suggested the brazillian blowout which made my hair so silky smooth! I am loving my hair right now, which is something I have not wanted to say in a long time! Thank you Mellie, I will be back!

I went here twice. once for cut and once for color. Cut was good. But a bit pricey. Color was OK. But she missed several spots. I had to go back and have it redone whichwas so annoying. But the worst part was the stylist was trash talking her mother and called her son an A-hole. I don’t pay this amount of money for that kind of interaction. Won’t be going here again.

I’ve driven by many times and read what few reviews there were of the place on different sites, and finally took the plunge to try it. The verdict: I liked it. The owner, Melanie, cut my hair(I specifically requested her based on other reviews.) and she did a very good job. Before she started anything, she sat me down in her chair and asked me what I was looking to do. I brought in a book with the picture of the haircut I was thinking about and she actually explained why the cut would be good for my hair. She also was very specific as to how she would cut and modify what was in the picture so it would work better with my hair. When she was cutting, she told me about any additional modifications she was making before actually doing them. I really liked that practice since it is not necessarily good to be surprised when getting your hair cut. Once the cut was done, she told me how to blow dry and how not to blow dry for my hair type. I ended up with a cut that not only addressed my concerns and wishes(e.g., wanting it to grow out some more) but also added some pizazz. Very nice. Melanie also carries some unique hair care products that are not necessarily available everywhere. She also guarantees every product you buy from her. If you do not like it, bring it back and she will give you something else. Needless to say, I ended up with a few products myself. The salon is clean, tidy and comfortable. Prices are reasonable based on what I have seen around Boston. Not cheap but lower than what you would pay at a high end salon on Newbury.(Hair cuts range from $ 40 to $ 80). Location is easy to find. Parking is available on street.(If you are going to be within an hour, you can probably park at the Fruit Center Marketplace just down the street.) I should add that Melanie is very nice. She is a talker but an absolute sweetheart. I will definitely go back to ensure consistency with the cuts and service. Until then, I give it a solid 3 stars with more to come, I hope.
