What a gem! After enduring a week of subpar breakfast and coffee in Dewey Beach, we found The Backyard on our way home. This place is positively adorable, with lovely hardwood ceilings and floors and a bright airy feel. When I first took a sip of the coffee, I could swear I heard a heavenly choir sing. With our family’s collective allergies to gluten, tree nuts, eggs, and dairy we were all able to eat something yummy. I had an omelet, the kids had pb&j(not on the menu but they accommodated the request!), and my husband had a breakfast sandwich. Everything was so good! Even the bathrooms were cute, which feels like a strange thing to comment on. If we ever do another beach week in DE we will be sure to stop by.

Here is the deal! You left early from Ocean City Maryland because you wanted to avoid the traffic but you also left mad hungry. You are on the road making good time but you need somewhere to stop. You stop at the Backyard! You get blown away by the décor and food. You continue on your journey back home! Its that simple, oh the pancakes… best pancakes ever! Definitely recommend to stop by either on the way to Ocean City or way Back!

My girlfriend and I ate dinner at The Backyard tonight and while my side dishes were tasty, the roasted chicken was dry and overcooked. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she said she’d tell the chef but nothing else happened. there was no attempt to comp me for the disappointing entrée or offer to cook me another chicken. I didn’t pay good money for overcooked chicken so I was very unhappy with this restaurant’s attitude which was«big deal». If I eat there again, I’ll be sure never to order the roast chicken.

Ate here with a couple of friends. Kind of a quiet afternoon. Clean, friendly, nice vibe. Good menu. The salads were very good — lots of leafy greens. However, my friend ordered the half chicken — it was dry as a bone. Inedible — even the dark meat was dry. So she had a bite or two and couldn’t choke it down. Server didn’t say anything — you think someone would notice when your entrée is virtually untouched when you go to pay the bill. We didn’t even bother to wrap it up to take it home for the dogs! So it’s kind of hit or miss.

Love the steak. absolutely perfect strip steak. Had it medium rare, top ten steaks I have ever had. Appetizer was the calamari with the garlic aioli… awesome. The garlic aioli was top notch. Service was great, beer selection was great, atmosphere was great. We came when it was raining and sat inside, but the backyard part looks like a cool chill dinner patio.

What a great place! The food is tasty(try the avocado fries), the décor is light and airy, and the drinks are perfect. The only drawback was there was one server for too many tables.

FINALLY, Sussex County gets it! Cute, bright, upbeat and conscious without being nagging. The vibe and environment remind me of beloved Fort Worth, with craft goodness on offer alongside fresh-baked joy(Pistachio. Cookies. with PISTACHIOS). Happy eaters perfectly complement the intimate indoors and backyard getaway. The Trucker sandwich is good enough to propose marriage to, and if you’re REALLY lucky, you’ll be waited on by friendly and confident Laura.

This is my hubby and I new breakfast spot. Without kids. It’s modern, clean, and the wait staff is super friendly. No rushing, no loudness, and so far no kids screaming. I love the cinnamon coffee. Hubby gets frufru coffee as I call it. Love that I can get a fresh baked cookie for the road too.

My wife and I ate here this week and would like to know if you hired a new chef? The food that we normally order every other time has gone downhill. The main course entrees were mediocre but the worst was the desserts. The Crème Brulee tasted like vanilla pudding and the top that is normally crusted nicely wasn’t. The cheesecake was crumbly and sunken in and had no taste whatsoever. My mistake was not buying your cookies which are usually out of this world. This is constructive criticism and unfortunately probably will not return. Still upset spending $ 70.00 with tip on this meal.

Excellent choice! This place seems to be trying hard and succeeding! We loved the avocado fries. Beet salad was fresh and crisp. Red pepper soup was tangy but not salty. Burger was cooked just right and steak salad was plenty. Key lime pie and great service topped off a surprisingly good dinner on a Monday nite. Keep it up.

4 of us were looking for a place with great food, open on New Years Day, not too far from Slaughter Beach. After some Unilocaling we found this place. Décor is great and the space is really nice. I enjoyed the tall ceilings and overall ambiance. Staff was friendly, greeting us promptly and seating us just as we walked in the door. Our waitress was very nice, very attentive and checked on us often, but not too much. We all enjoyed the food. Not one item from the apps to entrees to drinks had any issues. All food was cooked as requested. The deep fried avocado«fries» with aolie sauce are a very tasty app. The salads, soup, burger and sandwiches we had were seasoned well and were well liked by all. Menu options are perfect with lots to choose from but not like a diner menu of 400 line items. Beer and drink menus were decent, though would have wished for one or two other drafts. That’s just me as I’m a fan of lighter beers in winter. All in all if you want some great food, service and prices this is the place to visit!

This is a quaint place. The food is really good, but the service could use some improvement. As appetizers we had the goat cheese fritters and calamari. I was very sad when the cheese fritters were gone. This is a must try! The jam they served with it was a nice compliment. Dinner was the pork chop with gouda grits… yum! I had the steak salad. This was ok, streak was good, but the salad was on the plain side. This is were the service came in. Nobody saw the empty glass in front of me because nobody came back to check on us after the meal was delivered. We would have gotten dessert, but waited too long to see the server… I do believe I will return in hopes that the service is better at anticipating the needs of the customer as the food was really good.

We have visited this establishment twice. The food is fresh & exciting. Really outstanding! The service is fantastic. We were served by Philip tonight. He’s an ace. The space is very clean and simply decorated. We ate outside last time, which was wonderful. Even the music is a pleasant bonus. Great find!

Open airy place with friendly and efficient wait staff. I had Laura. The avocado fries were to die for. No have to to figure out that recipe. Crispy outside warm delis houses inside. Turkey club had tons of meat and the rockfish special was blackened but not too spicy.

I came here with a group of six on a Tuesday night which happened to be fries-night! We ordered avocado fries that came with a sriracha aioli and an order of the french fries on the fries-night menu that came with pulled meat and cheese. The avocado fries were lightly breaded and served slightly hot with a dipping bowl for the aioli. The avocado fries were eaten just as quickly as they were brought out! Our table loved them. The fries were brought out shortly after we finished the avocado fries in a large bowl, and they were equally delicious. Our server was great and really friendly.

A hidden secret! Love this place for Breakfast and Lunch. Service and staff are friendly and any wait is well worth it! Great for kids and family and cool evenings under the lights outside. Coffee from Swell Joe and best local bagels. Specials and a season menu keeps it VERYINTERESTING.

My boyfriend and I had taken a trip down to Milton, DE to visit Dogfish Head Brewery. On the way back to Philly, we decided to stop somewhere for food and happened upon The Backyard! We had ordered calamari, the BBQ chicken sandwich, and a side of mac and cheese. The calamari was fantastic — lightly breaded and freshly cooked! The BBQ sauce did not overpower the pulled chicken and it was topped off with a wonderful helping of cole slaw. The mac and cheese was lacking heavily in taste and culinary creativity. It was horribly bland. Overall, The Backyard is a chic and beautifully designed restaurant that serves average to above-average quality food. However, it did not leave upon me a lasting impression to return back a 2nd time. And for that, that is why I give it a 3-star rating.
