The Maylon House has a truly lovely setting in an old mansion on the edge of Milton, WV. We enjoyed the Frank Sinatra music, so elegant! We had a great table in front of the fireplace however, the candle in the center of the gorgeous old mantle was not lit and was green in color, it was Valentine’s Day, a new shimmering red candle would have been welcoming, and the scounces on the mantle should have been cleaned out and lit with fresh tea candles, they were waxy and also unlit. The gas insert fireplace that we sat by was cold, not lit. The cozy parlor style dining was the point of choosing this place and so, a cold, unlit, fireplace and undecorated mantle was a let down on a snowy Valentine’s Day. There should have been roses in the foyer! The room was drafty with the doors being opened and closed frequently during a snow storm. All of the early diners(like ourselves) were mature, so it would have been nice to heat the parlor up a bit. I attended an event in the outdoor barn type structure up there this past fall and it was freezing in there too. No heat at all out there! I was looking forward to being inside and had imagined how cozy it would be, in the parlor by the fireplace. They seriously need to warm their client areas up, older people cannot take the cold!(and they are often the ones that pay for local finer dining, let’s face it, they need warmth!) The waitress was attentive and friendly. Neat and cheerful. We left her a generous tip. The rolls were tucked in an elegant black linen napkin but they were nothing special, cold, store bought rolls, a sort of a limp surprise when you are expecting to unwrap hot, crusty bread. My Vegan selection of risotto with Portabella mushrooms wasn’t warm enough, and was sticky, but hey, a Vegan in WV learns not to kick up a fuss, I was just glad there were, in fact, not one, but two, vegetarian selections. I ate most of it and liked it well enough. My husband’s filet mignon was good but the side dish tasted like an ice cream scooper full of dampened corn meal,(which was supposed to be something called polenta parmesan) and I assure you that it was entirely terrible and not too hot either. Try swallowing tepid, clumped corn meal with garlic… right. We had to ask what it was. The Lava cake desert had been in the fridge for awhile because it was so firm/stiff and cold, not too sweet either, not at all the soft gooey delight that I had expected. My husbands cheese cake with raspberry sauce was very good. Here is the thing, I want this business to work! It’s beautiful and it’s elegant and Milton needs this touch of class. For the setting, it was very affordable. Sixty dollars for two Valentine’s Day meals and deserts with three coffee refills for two! You won’t beat it, but they won’t stay in business long with those prices, there are too many corners that they will have to cut to make it work! We would pay more for warmth and touches like flowers, candles, and hot, fresh, bread in the napkin baskets. Maybe they need to pump up the price a bit in order to warm the space up and light the fireplace and candles and serve fresh baked, hot bread. Those little things make people’s hearts smile and give them the dining experience that the stately old mansion deserves to offer. We can get cold rolls at home. Thank goodness our waitress kept the hot coffee streaming. There is room for improvement but the old home is so much more quaint than dining at a vulgar chain around the mall and we understand that it takes awhile to get things perfect, we’re going to try The Maylon House again, but not on Valentine’s Day next time because we thought the food was made up in advance a tad too early because it was a special event day.

We were SODISAPPOINTED with this restaurant. It is set in a beautiful historic house, and the entire property is lovely. Friends of ours had been there before, some time ago, and had liked it. There were 10 people in our party, and here is a list of the issues we had. 1) they assigned our table a young waitress with NO experience and NO training. Unfortunately, her personality didn’t offset these deficiencies. 2) we waited over an hour to get our cocktails — and when she brought them, she brought 2 at a time, left for a while and then 2 more. It took about 30 minutes for us all to get our drinks. 3) unfortunately, salads came the same way. Salad consisted of a plastic«bowl» of iceburg lettuce that had already started turning brown, two pieces of diced tomato and a couple of white onion slices. Mine came with the wrong dressing(which didn’t matter because I didn’t eat it anyway). 4) Of course we rec’d our meals at different times, and nothing was hot. 3 or 4 of us had filet and shrimp. No one ordered rare, but one came out actually totally red, and refrigerator cold. Sent it back to be cooked. I didn’t think mine had much flavor, but it may have just been my growing frustration that made me think that. Two people had the prime rib, which was TOUGH, over cooked and sliced way too thin. One of the chicken entry’s was prepared wrong and had to be sent back. 2 people ordered the salmon and were pleased, other than it was not hot. 5) the waitress NEVER once offered to refill our water glasses or cocktails, or asked if we needed anything. Needless to say, we won’t be back. We would have gotten up and left before dinner was ever served had we not been trying to «roll with it» so our friends who invited us wouldn’t feel even worse than they already did. DON’T WASTEYOURTIMEORMONEYONTHISPLACE.

Lovely intimate mansion setting hidden in Milton, great attentive and knowledgeable service. The food was okay, I had gotten the ratatouille. It was swimming in garlic butter. I appreciated the rolls being warm. The portions were very small compared to the prices of the dishes. Our party was the only table there that night. Hopefully this place will last, it has potential!

This was our first visit to Maylon House Tavern and I was pleasantly surprised to find such a nice restaurant in a small town. The tavern is behind the main house which is used for special events such as weddings and receptions. We had the Chilean sea bass and tenderloin and shrimp dinners. They were both wonderful. We ate on their outside patio which was very nice also.
