I am a guy who actively seeks out comic book stores that I have never been to. Back in 2013 I was in the area of Vortex for a wedding so I stopped by. I have to say I loved the feel of this place right away. It has the classic comic store feel with the more valuable comic behind the counter and on the wall. A wall of actions figures, and other merchandise. A section of new comics and the a lager section of back-stock in the middle. Classic. The owner of the place greeted me right away and was very friendly. He informed me that he was having a 50% off sale on all back-stock as it was the shop’s anniversary and to let him know if I needed help finding something. Score! I love hunting back-stock and in today’s comic environment, it is getting more difficult to find stores that sell more than new stock and what is popular. Now Vortex has that as well, but they are not limited to it. So I dove in. I LOVE flipping through long boxes and can make a day of it. I was just getting back into comics and had a lot of catching up to do. I found so much I needed here and the whole time the CBG(hehe) was always there to answer my questions, but never hovering over me. He was good to give me space. I must have left Vortex with 200+ issues and some local art. I forgot that part! He also has some pretty cool art prints from local artists. And they are very reasonably priced. I have been wanting to go back for so long, but live 2.5 hours away. My old roommate lives over there now and using Vortex as his weekly shop. He always has good stuff to say about his time there. In close, this place is a must! it’s what a real comic store should be. On a side note, to the review with one star, if you bring your children in to a store that has merchandise that is valuable then you need to make sure they already know not to damage any of the product. Teach them to handle comics gingerly first. A shop owner has the right to protect his investment.

Old school comic book store with a super friendly and helpful CBG. Yes, it’s dim but that’s great for flipping through the endless boxes of back issues.

If I could give 9 stars I would to comp for the completely uncalled for, mean spirited, petty and blatantly false review given earlier this month. I looove this place I used drive past two different comic stores to get to Vortex one of which was walking distance. Vortex provides you with a huge variety of titles and ever growing stash of toys and collectables plus local art and Video games. Heres what you don’t get other places: 1. Discounted rates on new titles weekly 2. No Minimum on card usage 3. Reservation of your favorites for no extra cost to you and if they don’t have you book they will get it for you(he even ordered me some figures at cost.) Id also like to say Ive been a customer there for a number of years and I am person of color and he knows me by name. On this side of town where I am constantly discriminated against this is one of the few place I have never had an issue. Ive reffered many friends and the same can be said for them too. As far as a child friendly establishment I have never witnessed a child being even so much as complained about in fact when I brought a friend with a child in to see if we could jump start an interest in comic fiction, he was given an exclusive issue of Spider-man(no charge). I have been in retail/management for many years. Vortex provides excellent customer service any reviews less than 5 stars is either being entirely too picky or has there head up there… Yepls!!! SUPPORTLOCALCOMICBOOKSTORES!!!

If I could give it zero stars, I would! My husband took our two sons there last weekend. Immediately when they walked in, the clerk asked what they we looking for. My husband said Sonic(for our son). The clerk them came behind the counter and followed them like a hawk down the aisle. When my son pulled out the comic, the clerk scolded him saying«don’t winkle that»! I’m wondering if my husbands skin color had any way they were treated? Shame. They left w/o making a purchase and will never return.

Quickly becoming my favorite comic book shop in the city. Small and unassuming, this place is packed to the gills with comics. New issues, back issues, toys, even some really great drawings by local artists, this place has it all. They continually run a 20% off of new comics sale, and last time I was in all the back issues were 50% off. This place is run by a guy who is the epitome of The Simpsons Comic Book Guy, except much nicer. Last time we walked in, he was playing a Playstation 1RPG. Awesome.
